The dude in Kung Fu wasn't a ninja though. He wasn't even Japanese. He was born in China of Chinese and European decent and he learned and practiced Shoalin Kung Fu.

Fun (terrible, racist) Fact: the role was invented by Bruce Lee, then known as Kato the Chinese manservent on TVs Green Hornet. He pitched the entire idea and the studio loved it, but they didn't think Americans would watch a show with an "oriental" in the lead role, so they found 100% Caucasian non-martial artist, non-athlete David Caridan and had him act like a racist caricature.
