Please don't put it there. It may become too hot to handle, or the fire may be too big to allow you access to it, and then you're stuck. Put it on the wall across the room from the stove, and then you're the suggested 8 to 10 feet from the fire as well.
Well, you did ask what everyone should have "in their home", so that implies that the indoors part is a given. ^_^'

Flashlight, scissors, couple spare water bottles in case your water gets cut off, and toilet paper :p
