You can't do that normally, and I'm playing mostly without mods. I think you might be thinking of XCOM: Enemy Within. I do think there is power armor. But that's a long way off.

XCOM Beta mainly fields a skeleton crew of soldiers to ward off alien base invasions. You may start doing field work once the third hangar is complete and we have a second Skyranger. You will be getting reports every time you are promoted above Squaddie and in the event of your demise.

I'm starting up a new game of XCOM: UFO Defense and I need loyal
