I have to agree.. If it's under 10$ and is in a pack that I have no interest in, I will buy the game for under 10. If it's on sale but is in a pack that I have potential interest in, I will buy the pack instead, I love being lazy and efficient.

My philosophy for steam is that it has to be 50% off or more, but there's always that part of me that's scared that it will go lower. I'm always hesitant about it, but your tips definitely helped! Thank you! (:

My only tip would be to not get carried away. It's easy to see many games priced around $2 or $3 and impulsively purchase them, but what kind of deal are you actually getting if you'll likely NEVER play them?
My recommendation is to seriously make a list of games you want to play, and then if you ever find yourself adding a game to your cart on an impulsive "good deal" move, take a second to consider if you'll have time to play it.

actually, this "good deal impulse" is what got me half life 2. i hadnt heard of it before but i saw the orange box on sale. thought, "oh, portal is in there? i know thats good so the rest might just be good as well" (i got the free portal)
And now i am probably one of the biggest Half-Life fans.
So it isnt necessarily a bad thing. Same goes for Mass Effect btw

I'm only saying don't buy games on an impulse that you're likely to never get around to playing anyway. Be realistic with your budget and time constraints, is all.
I am specifically NOT saying "don't buy a game you've for some reason never heard of even though it is basically what launched the platform (Steam) and revolutionized gaming for many individuals." I'd never say that.

Keeping your time constrains in mind is very important if you want to save money. A lot of people turn into steam game collectors because they can get games so cheap, that's just another way to enjoy the sales.

Thanks demoness forgot to mention the encore in the OP. Will edit it in there.

Useful guide. Let's test it out. I want to buy the Half-Life Complete pack and right now Half-Life 2: Episode Two is a daily deal (-75%) and it's labeled as a Franchise Sale. Now, I'm new to this whole thing so I'd like to know... is this the best time to buy the pack or is there a possibility for there to be another deal on the Complete pack?

The discount on the pack is daily sale so it won't become any cheaper this sale (unless the format of the sales suddenly change or some wierd error). Just buy it. today while it on the daily.

That is solid advice. And it's still hard to believe that I paid only $5 for the might and magic pack, such an amazing deal. Also got nation red 75% off for like $3.74 as well as AaAaAAA!! for like 2.50 maybe less. Only thing I kinda regret buying on impulse is Eufloria which I couldn't seem to get into right away at least, damn vivaldi's 4 seasons piece in the clip made me insta-buy it for like $2 i think but there wasn't any vivaldi in game. Also kinda regret not buying TDU2 which was going for only $10, hopefully its gonna be on sale again.

TDU2 was a daily the first day. I didn't that one due to region restrictions but if it was one of the top 2 sellers you have a chance of it going on sale again the last day of the summer sales (encore sales).

This the same for the holiday sales at the end of each year.
NEVER buy anything that isn't a daily deal until the last day, since games that are on sale CAN become a daily deal and become even cheaper. Buy all games you want that didn't go on daily on the last day.
Don't wait till last minute either since a lot of people will be trying to buy stuff so the store will go down and you will not be able to buy stiff.
The last day of the sales will usually have an encore sale. This means some best sold daily deals will be there again. (NOT all daily deals) Better buy dailies when you see them.
It's not 100% sure if there even will be a summer sale but ok.
EDIT; summer sale 2011 started 1st july
