Steam Deck?

View Results
Yea
Nay

The whole button/pad layout seems veryy weird to me. The track pads under the sticks will eat some accidental inputs for sure since its so close. After all the other steam hardwares before I wonder why people jump on the train without hessitation and even pre-order some. So its basically a better switch without any exclusiv titles.
If you really really need portable gaming I would still recommend to wait till you have some reviews from other users and not only the steam and IGN advertisment. For all other I can say: stick with your upgradable PC, hock it up to your big TVs and use a controller.

It looks like something I would like and use. I can’t wait to hear from others that it’s good, after which I might place an order.

I know some people want to be first, and im glad they exist to take the brunt, but having been stung on the Dreamcast and the WiiU, I’d rather wait it out

It has potential no doubt but the track record for steam hardware is not that good.
What I see as one really big plus is that you could "remote play togethers" on a couch with games that don't support local coop. An instant LAN party so to say.
But still for over 500$ everybody needs to deside for themself if the mobility is really that important to them. Otherwise its just a worse PC.

It's an expensive toy for rich kids. If I were a rich kid - I would gladly get one, it's really a great toy. But I'm am neither, alas.

I like the idea of a handheld computer that could play games from my Steam library. I have a desktop to play demanding (storage or/and performance wise) games on but I like to play plenty of indie stuff as well and this seems pretty great for getting in bed and playing a bit of Darkest Dungeon, some tycoon or maybe even drive around for a bit in ETC.

Probably not gonna get it before it's actually out and properly reviewed by people who know what they are doing (which with the current market may unfortunately result in not being able to get it for another year in case I like it) but I will certainly be keeping my eyes on it.

For demanding games, you can have them installed on your desktop and use steamlink to pay on the steam deck.
I’ve been doing that with my laptop for a while now as my laptop is old and has limited storage and the desktop is about a year old. Works great

Note: I’m sure there might be latency issues with online shooters, but I’m not good enough to notice the difference. For fighting games with good rollback, that might not even be an issue

I like the idea, but it feels that the compatibility issues could be daunting.

Don't know. Same as any other PC. Drivers, mostly... that sort of things

The idea of playing PC games on a tiny 7" display with tiny buttons seems utterly absurd to me. And it's expensive too ... I just wish Valve would leave me alone with their silly hardware offers on the front page.

Maybe if I traveled a lot...great for planes, trains, buses, etc. I would probably never use it at home.

I am STILL not through. It kind of switched between the too many transaction attempts thing or just failing in general. I've been at it since the very first second...

It won't be a Nintendo Switch alternative but people could play old Nintendo games with emulators, such as RetroArch. I wonder will Nintendo be Nintendo and sue them.

How did you manage to see those numbers?

I would also like to know. Thanks!

Edit: It seems it was this this link - (you have to be logged into steam on the web) but they have disabled it. People are also seeing the rough delivery date (Q1 2022) on the reservation page, but for me, at least for the 256gb model, it's not there. 512gb model shows Q1 2022.

Ah alright! Too bad I can't see the numbers anymore, but it does show for me the expected availability:

So when will there be the first giveaways for Steam Deck here? It is in the "game" list right now when creating a giveaway.

Will giveaways be allowed? I think I remember someone trying to gift an Index but they weren't allowed to for some reason.

I guess it will not be allowed. I created a support ticket already.
But I am pretty sure some will try.

Edit: What better way to get level 6 instantly.

Permalink

Pretty sure it won't be allowed, because each user can order only 1 Steam Deck.

I should have clarified. I created a support ticket to remove it from the list of games.

People e-mailed Gabe and it looks like the NVME drive will be upgradable, but the m2 slot is in the more uncommon 2230 size. The m2 slot will also be present in the 64GB version.

Yeah so it's not cheap to upgrade the SSD and makes sense why the price difference is high between models

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They updated storage specifications officially with 2230, but also added "not intended for end-user replacement".

Permalink

A person in that reddit thread also shared a discord screenshot where a supposed Valve employee states that the m2 slot will be difficult to get to as it's located behind EMI and thermal shielding. And doing so will apparently void warranty. So, that's probably why the specs list it as "not intended for end-user replacement".

I love the idea of this, I do, it's precisely what I wish the Switch was, but since my hands/wrist will hurt after playing the Switch in handheld mode for even the shortest amount of time (and looking at that ridiculous arrangement of buttons and joysticks, this one would be even worse), I'll have to pass. :(

true, i wish they can just pull of the controller like switch (idk about patent, maybe that's why)
lol i dont even play games on my phone because i just hate it

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Probably many people who will play on this will encounter hand/wrist problems, because it's almost twice as heavy as switch, doesn't have detachable controllers nor a kickstand of any kind.

Permalink

It's twice as heavy?! Oh damn, I didn't even realise! But yeah, the concept is great, the execution... not so much.

did anyone compare this to the other "portable" PC out there? most of i know they are much more expensive than this
at least it has better spec than switch and it might be the best device for emulator

Looks promising, but I'd wait for some reviews. Also, might never launch in my region.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

For my part, I'm not appealed, at all. It's very expensive for a small-screen low-fi experience : anyone who plays on steam today has a computer better than the deck, so the only better thing is mobility.
Valve has also an history on letting customer down with abandoned hardware (remember the steam controller).
