It has been mentioned that pretty much any USB-C hub will do.
Though I don't see why this one would be your choice. Just wait till we actually know what Steam's own dock will provide at which price. And if that should be too expensive, wait till others come up with recommendations. Soon after release there'll be popular candidates for all price ranges.

The only downside I see is that you need some extra stuff for making It a Steam PC. People are really excited about It, It's gonna sell well for sure, It's not made for an older audience imo, as a collector's item? sure. But who is gonna squeeze this portable device to the max? Kids and teens. The time is right and It's a way to push back all the GPU scalpers and re-sellers a bit more. Imagine Valve selling this in Q1 2020.
I'm not a fan of portable devices, but It sounds cool, let's hope It doesnt end as a big fail.
If the 64GB version ends at $300 It's gonna sell like pancakes.

It's not made for an older audience imo

Why? I would imagine kids and teens would often not even have the money, except for birthdays and christmas. They also probably don't have the advantage of having a big Steam library, like us oldtimers. I am 40 and definitely interested in the device. I am regularly on trains (at least every 2 weeks for several hours) and sometimes on planes and in hotels for work. I currently use my phone with a controller in these situations. Could definitely see me using the Steam Deck instead.

That's just my perception, I imagine fathers giving their kids or teens a Steam deck on holidays because they also used Steam and want to share something with them, just like Retro gamers do. I'm not a hardcore gamer, maybe my perception is flawed and there's a lot of 40 to 50 year old guys that bought a Steam deck for themselves. It would be great to see which age groups use the device. I also skipped young adults thinking that they already own a decent PC and there's no point buying one but maybe they're a considerable group too. I can only see myself using a Steam deck if I have a big leg injury, need to stay in bed and I can only use my hands. I don't have time (or the money) for a Steam deck, but hey It's a cool device.

Young adult here, in my friend group we all have decent desktops and we all still want one of these. I want it for lazy gaming in bed, one of my friends wants to stuff it with emulators to play Pokemon games, and being able to game on the go.

I don't think kids are interested in this. Steam does have kid friendly games but isn't exactly a staple for them like Nintendo is. I can see teens wanting this though, if they can afford it. The main target is probably adults.

I agree with spooky here, I think having a decent gaming rig is no reason whatsoever against a handheld. It's simply a different use case.

I agree, though, that it would be nice to get some stats on this. Maybe we'll get something after release.

Button layout looks uncomfortable; I feel like going for the buttons above the sticks will lead to unwanted stick movement considering how high up the sticks are placed. More options is always a good thing but I have no interest in trackpads and that seems to be the focus with steam products.

Oh, I just noticed the back grips. In my experience buttons on the back are not often used but when they are... most of the time its an accident. I'm using a Gamesir T4 currently and I hate the buttons on the back of it; that's mainly because they are just duplicate functions but also because I can't disable them and they are in the way. I don't need 2 copies of the same key so I tend to set all 4 of them to default jump action just so any accidents will be a little more forgiving. (lmao)

If this thing had a keypad on it instead of trackpads I would probably consider buying one. I have tried a lot of game pads and have said this same thing about pretty much all handhelds/game pads; I JUST WANT MORE KEYS/BUTTONS!

Nice idea. Probably not a product for me.

Sorry if this already posted:

Valve has clarified the technical specifications for the Steam Deck on its website. The site now properly displays that the Steam Deck has a quad-channel 32-bit LPDDR5 memory with a bandwidth of 88 GB/s.

Originally the site claimed that the handheld console had a dual-channel LPDDR5 memory with only about 44Gbps of data transfer. This correction properly reflects the true power of the Steam Deck and practically doubles its power compared to the initial announcement.

Any information out yet on the battery? Replaceable?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's a 40W battery unit - I am guessing (and I may be wrong) that it could be replacable in a similar fashion on how you replace a battery on a Nintendo Switch. Something to hold it in place and a small ribbon / connector to the motherboard. We shall see :)

Hoping for something easily swappable for us end-users. But as trends go.. I might be asking for too much ^_^

Would hate to have to buy a new Deck, just because of battery degradation.

It would be pretty stupid to have a 1080p screen, to be fair. 720-800p is the perfect compromise between visuals, performance and battery life.

Wasn't the battery quite good, as I recall? 2 hours for intense games and 6 hours for 2D platformers and such. Sounded good to me, especially compared to the competition.

well, i hope in the near future new battery technologies will be developed so that they will last longer for a charging cycle as well as the whole battery cycle
my problem is that the battery replacement might be a problem after 4-5 years, and paying 50€ for a new battery is an inconvenience
and another problem is finding spare parts for steam deck

They had to offer somethig besides the SSD size, as the SSD can be replaced by the user. I ordered de 512 myself to not be worried about any storage problems and don't need to add extra cost with micro SD and carry bags later.

Regarding battery life. Its pretty much as I would expect other then one test no one seems to have done unless I missed an offhand comment.

Valve says 2-8 hours. From that big a range I would expect the following

2hr - top end game using recommended settings.
4-6hr - most current regular games
8hr - low powered indi stuff that does not have a lot of constant motion. Games where only the character is changing vs the entire screen. I'd think that many puzzle type games would fit here. I like puzzle type games. Would this type of game make a difference? I'd like to know. And NOT just holding the controller so the screen spins around constantly but actually only have movements every 3 or 4 seconds like would occur when your actually playing a puzzle type. That test was fine for the hard hitting test but not for any other game play type.

No one did any games that I would expect to be in the longer range. I get that they were only allowed to show us a short list of games but why not do the test and just tell us they can only get the 8hr on such games without telling us the game or full details? (unless they did that and I missed it.)

They got the 2hr without issues when doing it normally on top games. 90 min when ignoring the recommending settings and boosting the power specs hard is great. Its shows you can do what you want with the device. Its not locked. How many other consoles allow you to set it how you want instead of forcing what the hand held wants? I don't have any hand helds. Is this some thing they all do? I like that feature.

I expect most of the stuff I play will be in the 6hr range from they way they talked about it. I'm not worried about playing games. Many Devs have said they have tested many games including ones that are not their own and most things play great. They of course have only been able to show and talk about their own titles.

I look forward to the full testing results that I'm sure they are all currently doing.

Of course the NEXT embargo is the big one. Software features and all the other things we expect it do be able to do. It uses steam input so I expect it will do everything the steam controller can. I don't have one but I've been checking out what it can do. It means everything will be fully customizable as far as me setting controls the way I want and a whole lot more. Thats a big win in my book. I also look forward to seeing what the steam OS desktop is like. I've seen the stuff its based on and I think it will be very usable.

I also look forward to them putting windows on it and doing some comparisons to how various games run. I might play with putting windows on mine but not till later. I want to try the Linux version the deck will have and give it a good go.

Linus said on the Wan show that he intends to use it as a daily driver for a month since its a PC. They did a Linux challenge already. Plug a monitor, mouse & keyboard into this and it might be similar. It will be interesting to see.

I am looking forward to it .... sometime after Q2 😭

Idea looks cool and have some chances on market. Bonus point will be a possibility to use your steam library (and no need to buy it from scratch)
I only wonder if it will be comfortable enough (size, weight) for long-term mobile use.

But for me there are no real reason to use it - for my user case I even dont see enough reason even for a laptop and use standard desktop PC. But if you are very mobile and like to play games which will shine on such devices like some action or platform games (and for sure f.e. not strategic games I like etc :P) then why not.
