I Hate it. I've always at least disliked it, but my dislike has festered over the previous months into total disgust.

ake, for example, my Indie Gala giveaway. I will admit, it was nice seeing the first four or so posts having people thank me for my generosity. But. I got bored a few days ago and decided to sift through the comments to see if there was any . With perhaps two exceptions, there wasn't a single comment that wasn't a copypasted "Thanks" on my entire giveaway. In five pages of comments.

My frothing rage has gotten bad enough that I don't even like the new policy against . Not because i disagree with any of the reasons behind implementing it; but because it's killed off the only kind of comment that wasn't a "Thanks" that I ever saw on any giveaways ever.

(This is a (Very easy) puzzle giveaway for an additional copy of the above-linked bundle. The previous statement does not make anything in this post any less true, at least from my point of view. Opinions gonna opine.)

80% of the people dont even say anything, so taking the extra 1 second to "copypaste" is better then nothing.

I like how you say "bored" in op, as if you're making a giveaway and expecting people to, idk, entertain you with comments? Be happy they at least said thanks, not just clicked "Enter to win" and closed the tab with your giveaway. And like what do you expect? Everyone posting a short story about how awesome you and the games you have posted are? If you don't like the attitude then don't giveaway games at all. :/

Either give a REAL response, or say nothing at all. Most these thanks are worth nothing more than the letters they're made of.

Like wtf, what kind of response do you want? Seriously, you internetards forgot that the grattitude isn't expressed with words/text. And if people who comment "Thanks" wouldn't comment at all, you'd be crying like "OH NO, NO ONE COMMENTS MY GIVEAWAY, THE COULD'VE AT LEAST SAID THANKS"...

And i looked on the 1st page and i saw this: "Thanks for the bundle giveaway banjo2E!" -killergp123 That is more than just a copy and pasted thank you, he even looked to see who the giver was which is far more than most users and then there is this guys "Feed me more bundles :D thank you!" -Eden2812 also. I dont know what you expect? A love letter detailing how much they love that you made a giveaway? Damn! there is even something a little special in your comments! I know this is a puzzle but apparently you meant what you said so yeah, i dont know what your expecting to be in there.

I'd like to say thanks anyway, even if you got bored, it's a matter of education and gratitud... unless you say it in the description and then I'll say nothing. Not too long ago I saw one of these giveaways in which the owner said he didn't want any "Thanks" because they were meaningless and instead wanted something "constructive". How "constructive" can someone be in a giveaway, I don't know.

Well, some people that complain about people who thank, then others who complain about people who don't thank. Just say in your description not to say thanks or your head will explode. I say thanks and if I have something constructive to say I will as well as a thank you. Oh and I type out thanks not copy pasta :) But in all seriousness, if you really want to have a constructive conversation about the games you are giving, why not start a forum thread about that specific game (or bundle?)

I hope people don't complain about not being thanked, haven't seen that yet at least. :)

In all honesty I can understand if people want to get comments with a little more content than a simple "thanks", about their special giveaway, because it's special to the giver. I can only speak for myself, but I guess someone may share the feeling there's always a doubt that will your doings get noted. Not only your steamgift-site's giveaway, but just about anything you do.

With a little conversation in your giveaway topic you know better your generosity is being noted. If that is the case, I can totally understand it and I don't think there's anything wrong asking for it, and they shouldn't be told to go make a forum topic about that game. I doubt the chatting about the game or whatever has anything to do with the much asked, more context containing comments, other than the deeper value of it. We just want people to notice us and our doings.

I still don't think it's better to not say anything than thank with a few letters, not at all.

edit: The worst reason I can think of for not wanting those short thanking messages is that you have to scroll through the text to find the "real" comments. For real?

everytime i post thanks, i thank the giver but only to see there is no or short description.
when i see a creative or just interesting description i shall share my opinion and probably also thank the giver after i've entered.

i dislike the thanks comments but if there's nothing to respond to it's hard to post anything meaningfull.

Just for the record, I never copy-paste my "thank you" messages; every single one of them is tailor-made on the spot and customized to fit the giveaway it is left in. By the way, I left you a comment, I trust you will like it.

Actually BOTHERING to say something is so much better than saying nothing at all.

I add the gifter's name when I thank sometimes, but at least some people bother to say anything.

Your comment to leech ratio is terrible. You have no argument.

...If my philosophy is "if you can't say anything other than 'thanks' don't say anything at all" wouldn't I have fewer comments than entries anyway?

So you agree that saying something like "thanks" is better than just entering without showing any appreciation? I ask that because you pretty much dodged my initial statement.

Believe it or not, having more comments than entries is a criteria for entering most private giveaway groups. You shouldn't feel the need to shut down people who thank. Like I said, they bother to do something rather than nothing and are active in the community.

"Hawt at work" or "Thanks". I'll take both , thank you mac boy. xD

Personally I like having "Thanks!" comments in my giveaways. It makes a clear distinction between those who can at least spend a couple of seconds to press a few keys on their keyboard to show their gratitude (even if it's miniscule), and the ungrateful bastahds who can't even bother to do so. Rarely, the grateful ones get a little sumthin' sumthin' from me.
In public giveaways, I don't care about comments much though. If I have made a public giveaway, it's most probably because I want to get rid of that game, so I don't care who gets it in the end.
Then again, everyone's opinion is for himself.

I love how gifters complain about the lack of proper gratitude for their generous action. Do they thank you after receiving the gift, if not this is the one that should matter. And now you have me wondering if there is hidden resentment behind every giveaway just do to the lack of properly formatted thank you comments.

Funny that You said that. Anyway I haven't actually seen any "gifter" complaining about not receiving thanking messages. It's only natural to expect for them and once in a while ask why don't people thank. Complaining is saying you don't want to see those messages at all.

If I hold a door open for someone, I do expect a polite "thanks". Although a welcome diversion, my faith in humanity is not dashed if the recipient of my benevolent act does not stop to engage in some witty bòn mót, or take a few minutes to think of an appropriate quip specific to the particular door, and its location.

While I do try to thank gifters by name, and occasionally even attempt a ham-fisted stab at comedy, the simple act of saying "thanks", while somewhat lacking in imagination, does put the user in the top 10% of well mannered and socially functional individuals on this site...

IMHO a bit of common courtesy is mandatory. Anything else is a bonus.

I think it would be interesting to create a giveaway where the condition of winning is posting something more than a generic thanks.

I could link you to more than a dozen of giveaways with comments like that (just had a fresh one end some time ago) and they don't even have that as a requirement.
I understand that, if you mean a public giveaway (where most people don't even bother to read the description) but most of the group/private giveaways I've seen are so lively and awesome (talking about their comments).
