The results are in and I'm happy to announce that I've graduated college!!!

It's not much but I've completed my degree, it's an Associates in Psychology that transfers so I can kinda speed run a Bachelors one day if I wanted it.
My reasoning: I did it for myself and the people around me. 💖

(Emotional tangent below, feel free to skip)
I haven't had the best life, I haven't had the worst life, but in the short period I've been on Earth, it's not been the happiest.
I'd struggled with my emotions and reactions to situations for a long time and my great grandmother put aside money for me to go to college and in the past few years, I thought it best to teach myself better when I couldn't afford therapy. I started with a major in Computer Science because I always heard how cool it would be for a woman to go into coding and my robotics teacher in high school encouraged me in it because I picked it up easily. Half way through, my father passed when I was 20 years old and that did a rough number on me. The pandemic and lock down happened the week before my 21st birthday and I didn't really have anyone to go to. Since I lived alone at the time and couldn't afford professional help, I decided to learn enough to help myself. I wouldn't go as far to say it's helped me become the rock of my friend group but it's helped me stand up for my friends more and support them better to help themselves as someone who was too quiet and afraid of the unknown myself to even begin helping others before.
I think in the end, what I wanted most was to one day be able to help educate and be better support for someone one day, the type of person I felt I really needed beside me when I was fresh out of high school, afraid of people, had no guidance at home, and no idea of where to even start asking for help.
I'd like to think I will be that for my younger half sister. Granted she has the benefit of having more support from her family than I could ever could imagine but I'm happy to say that she'd have me too.
Even if I can't be as helpful, she'll at least have me as the "At least I can't do worse than my sister" 😂

Congratulations, hope you land a job where you can use what you learnt! :D

I chose other since I went to a public college (Argentina), so aside from books (or xeroxes thereof) I didn´t spend a dime.

Tbh it depends on your degree and intelligence. Some jobs still require you to get a certain degree, while others are easily accessible as long as you have the willingness to learn on your own. Plus, i found college to be a good source to make connection and help you get a job (my campus used to have a campus fair where potential recruits gather, for example). Also, if you are not that smart to learn on your own, you can get some guidance from your lecturer in college.

Most of my closest friends I met while attending university. I'm someone who loves to learn and need my schedule to change not too infrequently, so the "each class only lasts one semester" thing fit me perfectly. I also really enjoyed having strict deadlines in the form of exams and then be done with it. I primarily learned by attending lectures and asking questions, barely opening the textbooks. In some cases I didn't touch the textbook at all. If I had the chance to go back and change anything, there is only one thing I would do different: In a redo I would make sure to take a brake between completing my BSc and starting my MSc. That's the only thing I'd be inclined to change. Maybe. I don't really have any regrets. Taking a brake at that time might have made my life a bit easier, but that's all. My life isn't the easiest, but I'm managing. I'm really grateful for being born in a country with a proper welfare system.

Best of luck to you, and sorry for rambling 😅

Congrats on graduating from college!

The value of a degree obviously depends on the degree field itself and what you do with it, but overall, based in lifetime earnings of college grads vs. non-grads, the data is exceptionally clear: it's absolutely worth it. No question, even if some individual anecdotes might suggest otherwise. That's true even if your career veers in a direction that's very different from your major (and I think you'll find that a LOT of people found their careers going in other directions after college. Mine certainly did!)

Congratulations! And thank you for all the giveaways!
I can't speak about the United States college if it's worth it or not. I hear horror stories about student debts but I'm not entirely informed on how it works. Good thing your great grandma helped you with that. In Europe collega is worth it for sure, but it can also be a waste. It depends. Because a lot of people end up doing something completely different of what they went to college for. But when you have that "level" of studies you do get an advantage on the market even if your studies were in no way helpful for the job you're applying for... (at minimum for pay, but also for promotions, etc) But I think you chose a great field in psychology.
Good luck with finding your purpose. And don't worry about it too much right now. You're just released on to the world, things will form over time. Everyone is a bit lost at 20, fresh out of college ;-)

Great point - I left to live abroad when I was in my 20s, simply because I was completely lost. Told my parents the day before my plane went. And that was back in the days before internet and mobile phones. :P

Also, not only does a degree help with job offers, regardless of whether it is in the field of your studies, it also helps your self-esteem in the job market. And - as in my case - I have studied so many different things, none of which directly related to my current job, but I do draw from all of these experiences and would definitely not have my current job otherwise.

So go with the flow and see where life and your interests take you. As TinaG said, things WILL form over time. :)

Congratulations on your graduation!

I am also happy to hear about your personal growth and improvement. I found it helpful to realise why (and when) I display certain behaviour patterns or what causes my phases of depression and anxiety. Once I knew more about that, it was much easier to deal with as I felt that my rational self could tell my emotional self that this will pass and here are some of the reasons why you feel that way right now.
That doesn't mean I won't still struggle with some of these issues from time to time at that moment, but it has made my life much easier and happier. And these moments trigger less often and for far shorter periods of time.

I hope you will continue on that road and be able to help others along the way.

As for the poll: I have studied geodesy (which I quit halfway through), finished a graphics/design college education, done a mechatronics apprenticeship, worked as designer, bartender, UN soldier, sports journalist and editor, and numerous other jobs I can't even recall. And the experience(s) I gathered have lead me to where I am right now, which is in the the field of automation software as a Learning Experience Designer. And I draw from everything I have done previously, including interactions with people from all runs of life.

So, whatever you do in life, do what feels right to you at that particular time. And don't be afraid of change, because it is inevitable. 💗
