Do you think it would be time for a change?
Things did indeed used to be better. I remember the time when talk of DLC strategy started circulating and everybody knew it was bad for gaming. Then over time, slowly but surely people got used to it because sometimes it was the only way to experience a game fully since developers almost always cut out content that should have been in the game. Nowadays if you visit a steam forum and criticize dlc for a game, you'll get clubbed to death by fanboys and casuals who want to justify their purchase.

Just read the comments in this thread. :D
People pointing out the obvious and not understanding what this is all about.

Don't worry man I am on your side. What the gaming industry is doing nowadays is bullshit.. I honestly can't believe how many of my fellow gaming comrades are just taking this bullshit face on nowadays.. even one of my most trusted cousins has gone over to the dark side.. the remaining last of us are few indeed.. but I will keep on fighting until we finally get back our old ways.. then people will start eating their own shit and come crawling back to us..

Can I point out that the Sonics on the SEGA Genesis had the Knuckles add-on, which is like a physical type of DLC?

I used to also hate the fact that payday 2 releases tonnes of dlc. Although I have started to accept it. Overkill have developed that game for almost 2 years since release have just recently secured another 2 years of development time for their game. This is there only source of income at the minute so I think the dlc is acceptable.

And they announced that they will be working on this game for another year or so meaning even more DLCs.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep though overkill have decided that instead of making payday 3 they will instead make all the heists individually and release them as dlc. Since they are getting no income from the majority of people that already own payday 2 they need other ways to earn income so they use this dlc as it.
People also get annoyed at developers that ditch a game as soon as it is released and go and release a sequel less than a year after so personally I find this as a plus from overkill.

Woo man calm down. I only stated opinion. I forgot that I couldn't do that on the internet without being told to go to hell!

it lives and trives on the Indie market, and if you dont like a game because its pixel art or 2D, fuck you , thank you :3

Don't know if someone mentioned it, but it really is a plague. Look for example at Witcher 3 - they are "giving for free" 16 DLCs with costumes and stuff (i guess) to those who simply buy their game. I mean, i love their games, but why would u do such a stupid thing? They are basically ripping content out of their game and then adding it as a "DLC" so they look good, giving stuff for free, which should already be in the game. That's a very cheap marketing trick my friends, very cheap. Edit: of course i'm happy that there's going to be some optional content in the game but yeah, still leaves a bad taste.
Comment has been collapsed.
You are assuming all of that content will be finished by release date. It's just as likely that they're not finished developing the DLC content. Or perhaps some DLC content changes the game in a way that not every player will want. It's easy to assume anything you want.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think that's because of possible reselling of box copiees (that's how i got my first Witcher :P). You can buy it cheap from someone who already played the game, but that means no costumes for you.
But yes, day one dlc is a no.

If it's not a good value for you then don't buy it.

le nostalgia knight!
the game industry is only just now about the cash grab, this is a completely new phenomena
Comment has been collapsed.
you know what, thats the face of gaming these days so you either accept it or you dont and become apathetic towards the games industry and you dont enjoy it anymore, when that happens its time to give up, accept, and roll with it and spen your money wisely and gaming is still a great pastime imo.

Yep.
I miss Expansion Packs.
And patch releases were an opportunity to add new features (some games still do, and many others never get patched).
Anything else was free third-party mods.
And fun cheat codes.
I try to avoid buying games that have a lot of DLC until there's a complete version, but it's difficult to keep track of it sometimes, especially when bits and pieces of paid DLC continue to be released years later (these things often would have been free user add-ons made with freely-released dev tools back in the day). Most recently, a game on my wishlist, Talos Principle just went into my mental "not-until-a-complete-edition-is-made" file, since they just dropped a fourth DLC. I'll be happy if I can win the base game here, certainly, but I'll still have some additional distaste for not having the whole game now.

I have come to basically understand and ultimately put up with the notion and fact that dlc's nowadays is just a bullshit way for developers to come with new shit up on the fly and then end up charging us the consumer for it.. especially for every little silly thing that we see nowadays.. developers NEVER make fully fledged games nowadays.. then sell it.. no they make the bare bones minimum that would constitute maybe if your lucky a nice and solid game then sell it then add in the extra awesome that we should normally get in a full game features later then charge us some shitty way over priced extra absurd amount like you stated $5 gun modifications and missions later.. I mean I do get it that people get satisfaction and like to pay for stuff.. but seriously man for us poor and mainly mostly loyal or frugal gamers... wtf bro c'mon.. developers... these are your people and you are constantly shoving huge piles of fucking shit and dicks up our asses.. c'mon wtf man.. seriously.. gahh.. i hate whenever this conversation or discussion comes up because I always have to always always tell the world about my/our problem... gahhh and put in my two cents in.. gahhh.. so yeah end of story..
tl;dr fuck the new-age developers.. they are not worthy of the old doom/age of empires 2 developers title's era...old school microsoft studios and id software etc would not be pleased nor happy with what the fuck you are now doing to your industry.. c'mon man.. just c'mon...
on another note.. fuck the new developer's games tbh since age of empires 2 and maybe then rise of nations.. they have all been shit.. no offense.. gamers.. step up yo game mang.. lol

double tl;dr the game has changed.. and personally for me.. not for the better.. but the devs ARE trying and we should not forget that.. so that is at least.. something hehe.. sorry for any future or previous further angry announcements/rants... haha.. lol.. etc...

I started playing computer/video games in the 80s. I'm 37 now. DLC in general suck. Some are great and I only buy them if they are. Lemming 'I need a game the day it is released' gamers are a problem, but also a reason why gaming became bigger than movies. I just get DLC if they are a great addition to the game and are reasonably priced.

Well, on the case of games like CK2 or Civ V you are absolutely right. You need to pay double the price of the game to actually get a better, spherical taste of it.
For me it is impossible to get a game you like w/o taking all the necessary DLCs.

DLC can be used well, but I barely ever buy any. Better than Capcom rereleasing the entire game whenever they add one thing.
As for TF2, I bought it before it went F2P, never spent a dime on it afterwards and I'm still playing it. It's the players who made up the bizarre hat-conomy and its insane prices. Valve was surprised themselves. But they gain no advantage over me. Sparkly hats are easier to target.
The episodic model is annoying though. On the one hand, it may give devs earlier responses and money, but it's painful to play through. I barely dared to start Life is Strange Ep. 2 today, or play too far, and now I'm finished. Twice. The Walking Dead was so great to play through, because I was smart and waited for Episode 5 before getting hooked. Not this time.
Gaming is growing up. It's changing and sometimes for better or worse. Now we get some beautiful, detailed, grown up games, or whatever niche you feel comfy in. Let's take the Nostalgia Glasses off and remember all the repressed memories we have about oldschool gaming.
Ninja Gaiden was awesome, but if you cut out all the bullshit design choices, the respawning enemies, the fuck-you-surprise-enemies that spawn in your face mid-jump, the three final bosses that sent you back half the game if you die ONCE, would it be challenging? It's memorizing one path that you'll only find by trial and error. It stops you from renting it. So you had to buy games blindly based on cover and title. Overprized games of which a grand majority was unacceptably bad, and you had no idea what was out there.
Part of the reason why I loved The Legend of Zelda was because I played about 5 turds before it, and all I knew was rumors it was amazing. It stood out after all the bad games, you took a gamble and you discovered a treasure. That's missing today. You already know the games that you'll like, and which to avoid. And you don't have to search 5 stores all day for the game and then order it, just to wait another week.

Totally dude ! we should rebel ...
I'm not against DLCs when they aren't actually the game itself divided into parts (like you said) , because sometimes a game is released then an awesome DLC is released 1-2 or more years later to refresh the game/""add content""/make you play the game again

I don't have a daddy to buy me things, tho. Where's my option? :(

TL;DR Version: DLCs suck. And the poll is a joke, deal with it.
I am a bit upset right now and thought about doing a thread about a topic that has been talked about a lot already, but I don't think it should drift into oblivion since it hasn't changed.
I used to be a full-time gamer. I grew up with games and played a lot until I kinda lost interest 3-4 years ago.
Now I am back into the biz after I bought this PC (two months ago) and realized what a f*cked up thing gaming became.
Every major title releases DLCs and Pay2Win Content, some games even divide the complete storyline into seperate buyable episodes.
Weapon Skins for CS:GO and Items in TF2 get sold for hundreds of dollars.
People spend shitloads of money on trading cards, just for the virtual dick-measuring contest.
I know that there are a lot of people that are old enough to know that things used to be better, but they still encourage developers to go on with that strategy by buying that stuff. In the time I haven't touched my console and didn't actively played videogames I thought that this was a mobile apps thing only, where you could buy in-game currencies for hundreds of dollars on Candy Crush or whatever kids play these days.
The main thing that got me to write this thread is Payday 2. Great game and all but 5 bucks for some weapon modifications?! And 5 bucks EACH for new missions?! I know nothing comes for free in this world but back in my day you bought a game and this was it. No further DLCs or in-game microtransactions. And IF there was more after the release there were things called Add-Ons, that had multiple hours of additional gameplay.
Gnaaaaaaaaaaaa, this so messed up.
Sry for my bad english. Potatoe.
