So yeah, kind of got ripped off for the first time. Just needed to vent. Anyone else remember their first time getting ripped off?

Remove th3 name before you get suspended.

You might want to remove his name to avoid any suspension for calling out.

But yes I still remember my first time, back in Diablo 2, 10+ years ago ><.

But it'll turn out like your suspense based on steamgifts policy, it's not worth for you anyway !

It's not about safe spaces. It's about avoiding witch hunts.

Could also be an impersonator because that guy's record seems clean. :\
Yup I still remember my first experience. I managed to get the guy trade banned on Steam. :]

Yeah, guy's record was clean and he had a few plus reps on his page from a year ago. Only had three games in his account though but it was clearly a trader one and had a link back to his steamgifts.

You met an impersonator, I'm sorry to say :\

The person you mentioned and left negative feedback for had +150 rep, has traded recently, and has over 1,000 games on their account.

A common tactic for scammers is impersonation. They'll copy the profile of a legit user and then add you on Steam, linking to the profile of the person they're copying. Then they'll take your key and run.

If anyone adds you to trade, it's always best to double check they're the person you think they are. You can use Enhanced Steam to get a link to their profile on Steamgifts directly from visiting their profile page, or you can copy-paste their profile url in to Steamrep, then take their SteamID and stick it in a url like: http://www.steamgifts.com/user/id/76561198017975643

Thanks, now I see its a complete and total fake. Also, the guys steam account is fraudlent, doesn't even link back to Steam gifts

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah. If you have a link to the scammer's profile and you keep visiting, you'll probably see them change their name and avatar as they move onto their next victims under the guise of another trader.

It would be nice of you to remove the negative rep you left for the real trader since they had nothing to do with it, but unfortunately Humble's going to be your only way to get any justice.

Already removed the rep, added the real guy on Steam to apologize for being such a dumbass

Don't be too hard on yourself, it's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment. Getting stung always sucks.
The best way is to consider it a learning experience, because now you won't repeat that same mistake twice.

I've never been scammed, but you're in good company here. Lots of people have been taken for a ride, and usually because you're willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Onwards and upwards, right?

Three games? I'm certain that it was an impersonator. The real guy has 1000+ games.
This would help you: Enhanced Steam
It adds helpful information like SteamRep and SteamGifts links.
Edit: Hehe. I'm too slow. >.<

Or how to tell a good trader from a shit trader?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Check their rep. Not comments on their steam profile that say +rep, but websites like here on steamtrades. Make sure its actually the same person as there are impostors.

enhanced steam is already recommended. you can also cross-match the steam profiles yourself by clicking the steam icon on someone's sg profile when you're checking out "their" feedback on sg. it's really not that hard.

edit: oops. posted it under wrong comment and i'm too lazy to fix it.

check their steamgifts rep. NOT steam rep, that one doesnt matter at all really. Of course steamgifts isnt the only places for trade (theres also reddit, tf2 outpost, etc but most serious traders have their trade topics at all 3 places, so steamgifts profile should be a good indicator).

there is also steamrep but its very slow to solve anything though. You could (and should) get enhanced steam addon and check supposed trader steamgifts profile from their steam profile page (not in steam client, but using browser instead).

also, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is :P

So if I post the link for rip off guy, would I get banned or not?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It would probably still be considered calling out, but the real trader (if they accept your invite) may or may not be interested in having the impersonator's profile to warn people.

Unfortunately it doesn't help too much since the impersonator will just make a new Steam profile once they've muddied the one they use for scamming.

First never accept random invites. If someone add you and you accept and link you to their(fake profile or not), in the profile page, see if you can add the person or not (If the profile is already in your friendlist, you won't get the "Add Friend" button). If you can add the person in the profile they linked you. That mean the person you added is using someone else name. Is things I do to be on the safe side.

^^ this, always check random invites profiles first. Also, try to add a line "DONT add me before you post in my topic" to your steamtrades topics too. Most people are going to ignore it anyways but oh well, sometimes it does work :)

yeah thats why i asked :P thats the "if it sounds too good to be true" part ;) i wouldnt expect anybody to trade a game like FF7 that goes on sale every once in a blue moon, for a game that was bundled a week ago :/ thats where i would do a double check on person im trading with and you should do the same in the future :)
