The Witcher is a great RPG. Storyline depends A LOT on your choices, sometimes in not predictable ways. Plus it looks pretty good and has a beautiful soundtrack. The only thing that can be considered not good is fight system, but it's not bad as well, just not ususal.
The Witcher 2 begins pretty much where previous game ends, but storylines aren't connected much, so there will be no big problems. Still, I recommend you to play Witcher 1 because of it's awesomeness.

Request for more info on the fighting system? What was good and / or bad about it? OP also asked a few replies down from your post, just a heads-up as well as that I'm also interested :3

You start attacking with a sword by clicking on an enemy. While fighting you must click on your enemy exactly when cursor is "burning", so Geralt continues his attack and makes it more devastating. After using magic signs you have to start sword attack from the beginning.

I've heard the Witcher I has some pretty low lows. And that you should get out of the swamp (I think) ASAP.
However, most people also agree that you should play the first; then play the second. Kind of how Assassin's Creed franchise goes (play the first one, but acknowledge that you'll never go back after having played another one :P)

I liked the first Assassin's Creed more than the others.

It's that true? I thought you just started with 200 more orens and a pat on the arse. From what I heard it changes like three dialogues in the game, one of them is just a knight letting you into an encampment.

I've beaten the first one and it was AMAZING! And I'm not saying that just because I'm from Poland.
Really.

If you are planning to play both games, (although story is not 100% related) don't start with second game. Combat system is different and graphics are decent in the first game as compared to the second one.

Bought Witcher 1 in the summer sale for 2€ and played through it in 31hrs and I was really surprices how good it still looks and how fun it is. Before I thought the Game was much older and not that great. And you can Import your Savegame from Witcher 1 into Witcher 2 - so you can keep your Gear. And if you buy it on Steam you can activate a "Backup-Copy" on GOG.

Well I played only W2 when it was released, read a little about the story in general (from W1) and I was fine, game itself (W2) isn't called one of the best RPGs of all time for nothing, combat system is kinda unique but once u get used to it it's pretty good, graphics really beautiful. Playtime is average not too much so u would get bored, I'd say about ~20h of course different endings, lot of own choices...

It looks like the current steam deals these are the cheapest prices for both games so far, but I'm also probably not going to get around to properly playing through both for a while. I'm wondering which is the better deal and how likely people think it'll be that these go on sale again for the same price/cheaper soon?
Also I've not heard much about Witcher 1 specifically, how does it compare to the second and how important is it storywise that I play through that before I look at the second?
