Tier 4 for dat shirt
Tier none. Cuz I ain't got time or $ for this
DRM FREE?!?!?!?

Very nice! Most of these games are awesome as they are (even without a Steam key)... but being able to play them on any PC via browser/HB is what's closing the deal for me, so it's Tier 3 for me.

Only now - but yes, tier 1's DRM-free and browser versions are unlocked by paying a single cent. :)

Although, to be fair, paying only a penny ends up costing Humble money just from the transaction fees. I suggest that people pay at least $0.25. I've done that lots of times at IndieGameStand, when I just wanted to try a game out and didn't care about getting a Steam key.

I'm not so sure about that. They have a corporate Paypal account. If they had to pay money to receive people's pennies, they just would make the minimum higher.

i used to think hb is losing money when people pay one cent but this makes sense. if they were losing money, they would have set the minimum higher, like how they do with the stripe payments. you can't pay less than $0.5 via stripe.

i think they stated before they pay a % on all paypal payments not a flatrate + % so they pay the same % on 1c as $10

You should spin the bottle and if it points in your direction then yes, if it points away then no.

I would have bought this, but 3d realms anthology beats these games (in my personal opinion), also I have metal slug 3 and kof on steam, so, nice try, it's a nice bundle for sure, I might get it if I feel like it

"Warning: Pretty much all DRM free :("

You seem to think that's bad? What's bad about owning the games you pay for?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You are misinterpreting my words. There is nothing bad about owning your own games.

However...
if you understand most of the sentiment in the community here, people desire Steam keys, not DRM-free only keys. I'm sure someone can explain why they prefer steam over drm-free, but a couple things that come to mind are:

  • having the ability to have your games in one library
  • achievements
  • badges
  • cards
  • and anything else Steam offers through their services

Here's an article about why some people prefer Steam over DRM-free

If you read through the comments and look at the poll results, you will see that many people are unhappy with the lack of Steam keys. :(

Mostly because ppl like Steam services and they have something to show off with friends. Nowadays, game isn't meant to only play anymore.
With DRM free, game is pure game, we can share games with all of our friends and enjoy them together. but I guess we all lonely. That's why we prefer Steam lol.

"having the ability to have your games in one library" this is actually a big reason why I dislike steam. Steam's influences results in many exclusives that I have to get separately to where I keep most of my games. I hate pretty much every platform because of that. But I guess that's mainly a problem for people who grew up getting all their games in their email.

Well, I understand where you are coming from. I use to be an offline PC gamer and bought all my games in physical copy because I didn't want to be tied down to just one thing. But I guess since coming to steam and buying digital games, I have come to like what comes with Steam, mostly the chat integration and the friends that I met through it.

But I suppose that's just me. Ofc, I think we all have our different opinions and backgrounds that influence our preference for gaming platforms.

And this is SteamGifts (not DRMFreeGifts.com), therefore most people wants Steam keys.

? I don't see how that makes owning your own game disappointing.

This is a hard sell for me, but I think I'll get the tier 1.
I like NEO GEO but I have become a bit steam dependant.

This is a fantastic bundle, especially for someone who grew up playing these SNK classics and remembers when individual NeoGeo carts were $200-300 per game.

For those interested in the games but unwilling to purchase the bundle because they are not on Steam, are you actually more interested in playing games or are you more interested in the social/collection aspects of the Steam community? Honestly, I think either is a valid choice, but if you are interested in actually playing games then the fact they are not offered with Steam keys should not stop you from purchasing this.

For those unwilling to purchase the bundle because you already have pirated ROMs, what is stopping you from pirating all your games?

I already have a vast majority of these owned physical copy.

I don't mind DRM:Steam. But I'm reluctant to buy a game again that I bought over 20 years ago

If it were on steam with achievements, cards, etc. then that's a different story.

I rather buy games DRM-free than Steam, but I'll skip this one as I'm not that interested in the games themselves.

I wonder what the differences between these and roms are exactly.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

These include a full, legal license to play arcade-perfect versions of the games, whereas pirated ROMs do not.

The actual Humble Bundle files include (again, FULLY LEGALLY LICENSED):

  • full .zip romset, usable in MAME
  • NEO GEO bios
  • poorly-made emulator by dotemu (in case you are too lazy to use MAME)
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+1 so do you need an emulator to play the DRM free game? is mame fully legal software? licensed?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The HumbleBundle games are fully playable as-is, they come with a pre-packaged, simple emulator made by dotemu. However, the included dotemu emulator is very basic and not fully optimized. MAME is a much better emulator that can also be used with the romsets provided.

MAME is fully legal, free, open source, and does not require special licensing beyond what is referenced here, as there is no copyrighted material in the actual emulator software itself. Only the game ROMs and the BIOS are copyrighted and need a license to be used legally, which this HumbleBundle provides.

so I need the game.zip + neogeo.zip and I can run these in mame? do i need anything else from the files that are installed via the HB installer?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's it. It seems from what other people are writing though that the most recent MAME version (1.68 i think?) requires a more updated neogeo BIOS file. The BIOS file included in the HB package is confirmed working though on MAME 1.45, and possibly on later versions as well (but definitely not he most current one). The roms apparently are fine even in the newest MAME version, so long as you have an updated BIOS file they should also work in the most recent MAME version.

Both BIOS and ROM as packaged seem to be working in FightCade without any issue currently.

At this point, this is a two tier bundle (excluding the shirt). Either you only go for the basic tier, or you go for the full bundle, because the BTA no longer has any meaning.

And the t-shirt is actually available in larger sizes. Nice. That's very unusual.
