Mine was SpaceChem (from the humble bundle it was in some time ago). My older brother gave it to me because he already had a copy or somesuch.
The first game I bought was Portal. And ever since, I've been thinking with portals.

First Store Transaction: Jan 9, 2008 - NVIDIA Portal: The First Slice - Purchase - Free
First License: Half-Life Platinum Pack - Complimentary
Seems early purchases on Steam didn't get tracked under store transactions (eg. The Orange Box)

It says Titan Quest Gold is my first transaction, but that can't be right since that was in 2011 and I've been on Steam since 2007...

Half life Platinum pack...
A long long time ago (8 years or so if I believe steam count)....
I was using Steam very few back then, and was totally out of it for the past 3 years (like everyone else at some point, I had to focus on my personal life and work).
Just got back in for the last new year's eve sales and can't stop catching up on gaming side, it's quite fun...
P.S. : I'm not that old, but it makes me feel like a dinosaur right now :D

Half-Life Platinum Pack for me as well. That was when they made Steam mandatory in order to play Counter-Strike.
You beat me to Steam by exactly 2 weeks :)
My first actual digital purchase in the Steam Store was Audiosurf in 24 August 2008, followed shortly by the Orange Box.

My first purchase was Audiosurf on Feb 19, 2008.
I've had the Half-Life Platinum Pack and CS 1.6 since Apr 10, 2004 though. It took me 4 years to buy anything cause 1) I didnt think Steam would last and 2) I didn't have a credit card until 2007 anyway.

Click here to go to your Steam account.
Click on Store Transactions, then click See All. Scroll to the bottom of this list.
What's the first entry?
Mine is:
May 20, 2010 Portal - Complimentary (Opt In)
They had a free week of Portal. Everyone who downloaded Portal for free that week got to keep the full game for free, forever.
My first purchase through Steam was The Orange Box. I saw it on sale and remembered my little brother (divorced family, bleh) saying that he played a lot of Half-Life before he joined the US Army. I figured I should see what all the hype is about.
Feel free to tell everyone a little bit about that first entry.
