Hello, Steamgifts! The Witcher (the first game in the series) is on sale for the Steam Halloween Sale for $1.99. I checked using the Enhanced Steam browser addon and found that that's the cheapest price it's ever been. It's been on sale for $1.99 before, but never less than that. So, I ask: what are your opinions on the game? Is it worth playing? Should I pick it up for this price? Are there better games that I can pick up for $1.99 right now? Thanks for your help!

Fantastic game, but some people find the controls awkward, which prevents them from putting in the time to truly enjoy it.

What do you mean by awkward controls? For example, do you mean counter-intuitive, or just different from other games?

Simply put, the fights are in some way a mix between qte and constant repositioning to cast spells and use potions. If you can get through that, then the game is a piece of art

Meh, if gameplay and the whole game is great then controls can be used to very quickly.

You don't like Witcher controls? Try playing first Gothic and THEN tell me how you love Witcher ;)

You can set it to action rpg mode and play it similar to diablo.

The inspired by and soundtrack albums are both included in the Steam version as well, not sure what else is.

The extras are also available in Steam, but the thing is, you can't just download one or two in Steam, you must download the entire package. In GOG, you can download them individually.

How do you do that if you buy it from Steam, you don't get a key do you?

You do actually get a CD-key when you buy The Witcher: Enhanced Edition on Steam :D

Does this works with The Witcher 2, as it says on the link? Do you know?

It should, it says in the link that it is for both The Witcher and The Witcher 2

1 and 2. It may happen with 3 in the future but they've confirmed it won't be at launch.

Is the story of the first game not integral to understanding the second?

it is, but you get an intro that explains what happened in first game in witcher 2, so its okay to skip

Yeah, I've heard some complaints about the combat system but is it really that bad?

def worth it for that price, story is great, combat is "diffrent", hard to get used to, but its decent once you do, or if you dont like it you can just use the "magic" skills and it gets rid of the qte parts of combat

edit: sword combat is basically you pick from few diffrent styles, for example theres some aoe style, slow, fast, against humans, monsters etc. Each style has a skill tree, in which you can unlock new combos for that style, think it was up to 5 per style. The fighting is basically you always start from the 1st tier combo when u attack and you build it up untill 5th, which requires you to press left click at a certain time, in order to progress through the combos. If you mess up the timing it starts from 1 tier again. Obviously the higher tier of combos are much more powerfull. Its pretty easy as far as QTE goes, just takes a while to get used to, and as I said earlier if you dont like it you can just go magic skill route which doesnt require any timing.

You could skip it and go straight to Witcher 2. The combat and quests are pretty monotonous. But if you like the Witcher universe and want to follow the story and characters then it's enjoyable enough. Obviously it's worth the 2 bucks, just know that it's not a short game and it's hard to keep going if the whole Van Helsing theme doesn't appeal to you.

It's a GREAT game and for me it's better then second part. The controls have problems only in over the shoulder mode, but isometric is OK.

If you can get used to the combat (I did instantly so I had no problems with it) you'll play an excellent game. For $1.99, it's a MEGA DEAL.

That's a great deal on The Witcher, and Steam owners of the game can also get a DRM-free backup copy for no cost! :)

Witcher 1 is good, really good. I loved it. The combat is a bit strange at first, but you get used to it.
Witcher 2 is amazing, a MUST buy! Fixes a lot of the small issues 1 had and improves the combat a lot.

Both can be later redeemed on GoG Witcher Backup feature, thus having full DRM Free copies. Also By redeeming them there you get 20% off of Witcher 3, and with that it makes it one of the cheapest places to pre-order Witcher 3 and with the most goodies.

It's a good RPG, but rough on the edges. For 2 bucks I really doubt you would resent the decision to buy it even if you don't pull through the whole thing.

Was a good game, but be careful, as you can't change difficulty mid game, and I got stuck in a swamp for a LONG time because of it.
