Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in one month.

The prize: Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Note: For those who live in SEA, I messed up. I failed to realized that the game is not available in your region yet. Feel free to participate, but please be aware that it will take me a bit longer to deliver the game if you happen to win (expected release date is Feb 25). Sorry for the trouble :/.

Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 6 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 6 +30h games. So long as they were in a monthly at a given point, it is all good.

Just post a comment with either screenshots/ achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.

FAQ:

Why you doing this?

I hate money. That and I realized I've been subbed to the monthly for over five years (yes it has been that long, I checked) and it occurred to me that I've barely touched the games I've gotten from it, let alone played them. Figured the same would be true for a few others, so I figured this is a good way to change that. A sensible person would probably unsub in this situation, but please refer to the beginning as to why that will not happen.

I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?

No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.

Why six games?

The first few monthlies had 6/7 games in them so I went with that.

How long are you going to do this?

Until my credit card statements gives me nightmares.

This event "ends" on February 5th when the next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the next day. If you manage to finish game number six in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to give you the link in time.

Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to require a signature for your packages.

List of eligible games: https://barter.vg/bundles/3/3/

I'll make the giveaway next week since I can't make it end past January at the moment.
Edit: Giveaway made! :D

So, clarification on something.

Some of the games released through Monthly/Choice are compilation releases. For games like that (Example, Mega Man Legacy Collection), would each individual game count as a completion, or would you need to do the full set for one completion?

Hmmmmmm hard to say. I think overall nothing special, bad at reviews myself so I looked at some other steam reviews and tend to agree with the general gist most ppl say with their pros and cons xD

I did like it overall in general, don't think it's something that would stand out depending on your backlog and your eagerness to play some more generic-ish jrpg. Combat I liked in the beginning but it turned out to be a "I totally can spam 1 button and win type of thing" but you can still play in a cool way if you want to.

-Something that really bugged me was that I'd love to switch characters in combat easier such as in tales of berseria for example basically clicking some buttons.....but no, you can do it but you have to pause -> menu -> party -> swap -> unpause and then do that again to swap back....which made me kinda just stick with 1 particular character per battle...
-lots of grinding (normal i guess?)...leveling real slow (for me) even though the game wasn't too hard, kinda made it harder on myself by skipping that grinding fighting higher level enemies which in turn made some extra characters lower level and untouched
-Lot of back and forth walking with no teleports (well you can tele home but not to other rest sites...I mean you need to level so why not)
-quests only give items....and not experience which I found a bummer

I feel like I had a lot of QoL cons which I disliked...BUT still happened to enjoy the game which I think really depends on taste, I think I took the whole month to finish this game taking breaks etc. but without this event I prob would have taken longer starting other stuff first (thanks again I like that I at least finished it!).

TLDR read other steam reviews first if thinking of playing it :')

Pay attention in Little Misfortune. You can 100% this game is less than 4 hours if you do so. If not you'll have to replay over and over. Also a few achievements are based on one area doing two different choices. Save often and reload for those 3 achievements.

Does completing a 20% store discount count?

Not sure what you mean by this. Please explain further.

I have a few games with 1 achievement, but they are virtually unplayed. Would they qualify?

No they would not. You cannot have any play time with the exception of idle time from farming Steam cards.

Please refer to the graphic image attached below regarding the inquiry about whether the discount would count.

As for the IIIrd question, they would be reasonably longer than the completely unplayed ones. But fair enough, I'll try to find some unsoiled by my mouse clicks.

job is awesome but very demanding both in time as in energy. I've fallen asleep early in the evening multiple times the past weeks so I don't game as often any more...

I'm in the final stage of Gris, but I hope/think I can redo stages in order to get all achievements. The game really is something else. Compellng story (if you get it that is), great platforming mechanics with smart ability/surroundings unlocks. A bit confusing at times though and some timebased achievements (I hate those, I want to enjoy my playthrough not rush on...)

Demanding jobs are only worth it when you can say they're awesome so good to read that. Falling asleep is a bonus! (says the chronic insomniac)

Totally agree. I passed on buying it because it didn't feel like it was going to be my thing and then ended up winning it in a small group and I absolutely loved it. Definitely my favorite win from 2019. It really does make great use of its gameplay mechanics and manages to tell a beautiful and engaging story without dialog, which is quite the feat.
also agrees on timebased achievements. Ugh. They usually frustrate me but in a game that's all about atmosphere and discovery, they were more than odd, and a little off.

Haha well that was the plan but then 2020 happened. It's not so much that I don't work although kids and money, it's like sponge and water, right? It's mostly that my girlfriend has spent most of the year in her home country so even though we are used to the distance, there are some things that can't be done over the internet and hm kid raising ofc is what I'm referring to :P

I've played so many awesome (indy) games I would've never thought of buying myself...

Same. From Orwell to Eliza, Pendula Swing and Whispers of a Machine or A Short Hike, some of the games I enjoyed the most last year, I have won after entering rather randomly and those are games I would never have gotten even in a bundle really.
All thanks to SG, generous gifters... and CJ who kicked-started my 6 wins a month minimum play routine.

It's still pretty low key but the dev (I believe she is doing it all on her own) has been very helpful with a bug I had and she's been adding to the game. Loooots of content already and it's an interesting setting for an RPG. Good world building.

1st time I try this event. I'm choosing games I wanted to play anyway. I doubt I will make it in time, but let's see:

  1. Jan 2021: Deleveled | Played
The puzzle part wasn't too hard; I liked how, as you progress, new mechanics are added, without changing the base concept of the game. I liked the platforming part more though, even if some levels ended being kind of frustrating due to how small some "success windows" are. It would have been a lot easier if I didn't decide to 100% it.
  2. Aug 2020: Wargroove | Played
Very childish story-telling. Nice pixel art and character design. I've completed the main campaign and the puzzles; kinda time consuming, but it never felt repetitive even if it easily could have been. It presented a good challenge in the first acts, then it became oddly easier for me. The hard mode in arcade was stupidly almost impossible, I didn't bother with that.
  3. May 2020: XCOM 2 | Played
It's the game I enjoyed the most out of the six. Played the whole campaign on veteran (which is normal mode). I liked the gameplay, the story and most of all the character name/appearence customization. I regret not owning the WoTC DLC. But still I'm satisfied with the game.
  4. May 2018: RUINER | Played
Simple story, not so simple gameplay. It took me a while to understand how to play decently, what skills to use, what weapons, etc. I managed to beat it in hard mode and I'm happy with that. I really liked the music.
  5. Oct 2017: Orwell | Played
Well, interesting concept. There's not really much you can do a part from reading and finding clues, so sometimes I felt kind of bound to do certain things, but in the end I've been enthralled by the story unfolding as you find new clues. Knowing who's behind the crimes I didn't feel the urge to replay it for different endings.
  6. May 2017: Undertale | Played
Really nice concept. Nice message. Some really bad jokes (in a good sense) and funny mockery to other genres. I played thruogh it once and ended up with a "neutral" run. I guess I'll replay it soon and try a "pacifist" one (edit: I couldn't wait and got to the "real pacifist" ending and I must say it's one of the best endings I've ever seen in a video game).

Hey CJ, thanks for doing this, this will be my first attempt=)

Title Status HB
Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard Completed December 2020
GRIS Beaten April 2020
Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter Completed July 2017
Path of Giants Completed December 2020
Call of Duty: WWII Beaten November 2019
Smile For Me Completed November 2020

Some thoughts:
Out of the two detective games, I enjoyed Frog Detective 2 more, though even that lags behind the amazing first game, still, can't wait for part 3! Sherlock had its moments, but there were some unfun mechanics that dragged the whole experience down, still the one case with the accident that they just stumble into was really awesome, wish all the rest carried the same creativity. Disclaimer: I have yet to play the other sherlock games by the developer.
Path of Giants very light puzzle game, sadly quite short, with great chill music, I really enjoyed this.
GRIS I was massively disappointed by this game, the art style is nice, so is the music, but it is very lacking as a game. Expected more out of this title, as it stands I think I agree with one internet comment I read after I finished it, that it would have been better as a short film.
Smile For Me very light puzzles and list fetch quests to satisfy npc-s, with an interestingly shaping narrative, where you are getting more and more 'in the know' as you are playing, music is nice, the voicework is unique (to some level) and I enjoyed my time until the ending. Small spoilertalk: I did not like any of the endings though, while the bad ending was intentionally unpleasent, I did not find the secretive good ending all that much better
Call of Duty WWII I was very curious about this for a while now, as I always figured the world war era COD games were good in their days. While this was not a game changer by any means, the campaign did follow some similar settings to Saving Private Ryan (though it is pretty sudden that chapter 1 is D-Day Normandy straight away) and also Band of Brothers (with regard to the especially the winter level), and while the story was not at all satisfactory (or interesting) the setting and the scenarios carried the game until the finish line. The gameplay itself... well, it is COD. One interesting take is that they did away with the cover health regeneration and you actually have to use health kits (which you can stack up like Max Payne did with the pain killers). Semi-noteworthy: while playing this I also had some memories popping up about Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, but when I searched for it I was surprised to see that was a game released in 2008. Time flies, huh.
