If anyone ever asks you to use a middleman, do NOT do the trade. This is outdated and is no longer used unless for scams.
And just buy the whole bundle and sell/trade the rest, It's gonna cost you less cause this monthly is way above average. If the rest of the unlocks are good you might end up getting Northgard for free.

Didn't see. I shouldn't have commented, now I made it look fishy :D

use enhanced steam browser extension
go into your friends list and find the trader
check his profile and copy the url
open the browser and go to his profile
you will see a SteamTrades button
click it and check if the ST profile of the guy in your friend list is the same as the one you talked in ST

Easy, check the "traders" profile on STrades, if it shows the 'add friend' button, the guy you're talking to obviously isn't the same person.
Edit: Okay maybe that wasn't really clear. But I meant, if from the steamtrades profile, you click on the steam profile link...
Edit2: another thing you can do is use enhanced steam, so you can have a direct link to steamtrades (and steamgifts for that matter) on steam profiles in the browser. But that is just to make it more handy, you can still easily check without Enhanced Steam.

You can also uses sites like steamrep or steam id to get the profile url instead of the id url, which you can then check against the steamtrades site.
My steam profile is https://steamcommunity.com/id/crizyz/ for example, but putting that through steamrep or any steam id site will give 76561198048004902 as my 'ID' which means https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198048004902 will lead to my profile (Steam's naming in the URL is actually quite confusing, as you would expect the number to be ID, and your own custom chosen name te be profile, but for some reason it's the other way around).
On ST you when you click a users name to check his profile, it will show the 'ID', in my case 76561198048004902.
You can also just directly put the ID after steamtrades.com/user/ which would lead to https://www.steamtrades.com/user/76561198048004902 in my case. Which is handy to check the actual ST profile of the person you're talking with (in case he even has a ST profile of course).
So you can check both ways (and leave negative rep for the correct person). But of course, if someone is impersonating someone else, better not trade with them to begin with. :)

We have the same game of interest :P
But what I did was subscribe anyway for the whole monthly since I saw people buying Mutant Year for like 6-7 euros and no one selling Northgard for less than 4 euros so I sold Mutant + Absolver for a total of 9 euros, essentially getting Northgard+ the late unlocks for myself for only 3 euros.
As for actual trading advice that others haven't already pointed out, it is also a good idea to be the one adding the people you wish to trade with. It doesn't matter if you see them sending a friend request, add them anyway through their steamtrades, that way you know absolutely sure who you are talking to is the same guy.

I search for people that wanted them using Steamtrades' rather convenient search function. And yeah I got my money on paypal. As for what is stopping them...
Trust most likely, and that is why you only deal with those of high rep that won't do such things that will mark them as scammers. That and making sure you have sufficient evidence to counter their claims if you happen to deal with one that tries to dispute the paypal funds.
Here is an example of a guy buying it for 7 euro, see his reputation, not something he'd throw away for a measly 7 euro.

you should try joining https://steamcommunity.com/groups/groupbuys and buy from there. safe and no scammers there.

You would need to wait till humble monthly release day to buy it since that’s when people list it for split price.

Give Barter.vg a try. Theoretically you could have the same problem, but I find more user friendly than steamtrades. And since offers are less public scams are less likely. I haven't heard of any there, though you should still take precautions.

I was going to mention barter.vg too. There's more accountability, and moderation if there's an issue. I wouldn't say it's more user-friendly than SteamTrades, though, at least not from a user-interface perspective. It's not newbie-friendly, and can be a bit inscrutable and arcane. But for me it was worth the learning curve.

Hi
Am interested in Northgard which is part of the HB Monthly but have no interest in the other games. So was thinking i could get it cheaper buying through market etc. as there must be a fair few on there right now.
Only thing is last time (and only time) i tried to purchase through Steam Trades i posted on someone's post about a game they had (on steamtrades.com) and was then contacted by him......accept it wasn't him, it was someone who had copied/duplicated his account....right down to username and profile pic etc.
Now being a first time trader i tried to ask all the right questions and it obviously seemed legit. I had to go first being new....and got scammed.
How can you protect yourself when trading? How do you 100% know that your talking to the right person who has a game to sell?
Cheers for any advice
