Do you use the common WASD or other key combinations?

Personally, I use ESDF because it's close to the center of the keyboard and when I type, I don't need to move my hand too much.

WASD and mouse. That's all I need, unless I'm using a controller.

WASD

I now some guy who's left handed and uses numpad to move. Numpads are comfortable - so many buttons around including arrows which can be used by your thumb.

I used to use the arrow keys way back in the way when I didn't play many games on the computer but when I got Steam and started playing games like borderlands and tf2 on there I just adapted to WASD since it was the standard and was much more convenient.

I'm left-handed so I was using PL:" but after I changed my keyboard I switched to OKL: because keyboard was blocking on some keys (i.e. space) when pressing P and " at the same time.

Used arrows back in my CS/TFC days (pre CSS). Had binds on nearly every key on the keyboard too.
Switched to whatever's the default after getting a new computer and not wanting to deal with reassigning all my keys all the time. If a game defaults to hjkl or some other weird shit, so be it.

I use m,./ (back, side left and right, and crouch) and then right mouse to move forward, left to shoot, and middle to jump. Imho it's far superior to wasd because it gives me easy access to the spacebar, Alt, Shift, Enter and Ctrl keys. Plus I can use the two rows of keys above, kl:' and po[] for things like flashlight, zoom, and what ever else I need. This way I don't have any keys scattered around the keyboard, they are all right there in the right corner of the keyboard, at my fingertips.

That sounds like the controls I used to use back when Quake was "the big thing". Switched over to WASD at about the time Unreal was released. It did take me a few months to really get used to WASD over my old control scheme, but I got a noticeable performance increase in multiplayer games.

That's the same finger movement I use, but different keys. Those were the default keys for Wolfenstein, Doom and I believe the first Quake. I think Quake 2 is when WASD started to become default, but I could be wrong.

I can't stand WASD for FPS, it feels clunky and inefficient. It might be OK for twitchy shooters where you just move and shoot and don't use any other keys, but in more complex FPS games where you have use, open etc. you're having to move fingers off a movement key to do something else. I use a system that I have refined over the years that goes way back to those original keys used by Wolfenstein and Doom. Like I said earlier, it's I'm using the same fingers for the same function as those old keys, but I moved over to the home row (ASDF for those that know how to type) to give me access to more keys.

I set the same keys for every game, so when switching between games I don't have to remember different keys for different games. Here's my basic movement system:

  • Left Mouse Button = Shoot
  • Right Mouse Button = Forward
  • S = Strafe Left
  • D = Strafe Right
  • Space Bar = Move Back
  • F = Jump
  • V = Crouch
  • G = Use/Action
  • Shift = Walk/Run/Sprint

With this setup the movement keys are not all tied up with one hand like it is with WASD. I can still reach the QWERTAZXCVBN keys for other things while I still have my fingers on the movement keys.

Keyboards have a notch on the F key that touch typist feel for to know your hand is in the right place. If I move my hand for some reason, when I move it back, I know if it's in the right place without having to look when I feel that notch under my index finger.

hm interesting option, indeed F is base key for touch typing. Never thought of it that way. Although I tend to use controller (and suck even more than supposed to)

I just remembered when back in the day you'd have both hands on keyboard when playing FPS.. I think in Duke Nukem 3D you'd move with numpad for example with right hand and left hand was for shooting, crouching, weapon selection.. maybe even looking up/down, don't remember (doom didn't have up/down)

Yeah I couldnt agree with you more simon, ESDF is the way to go. I used to use WASD but never had enough keys in easy reach in games for which I required them such (specifically Quake3 and QuakeLive), it wasnt until I tried Strenx's QuakeLive config that I realised how much easier ESDF gaming is. Also, I use my right click for jump and spacebar for aiming down my sights in cod or counterstrike, soooo much quicker for strafe jumps lol

ZQSD . I play every game with this setting so I feel comfortable this way.

I sometimes try to play some FPS with a controller but I suck with it, it's like peeling a banana with boxing gloves.
