I might be getting a new pc and this is the configuration i had in mind. I will link either manufacturer site or newegg since i'm buying from my local store. Please don't suggest something much better because this is really stretching by budget to its limits and at any rate what i can buy is highly dependant on the store stock.

CPU:

AMD FX-8320, 3.50GHz BOX Black Edition

GPU:

AMD Radeon R9 280 Powercolor TurboDuo also

MOBO:

970 Asus M5A97 R2.0

Memory:

DIMM DDR3 2x4GB 1866MHz Kingston HyperX Fury Red

PSU:

600W Cooler Master B2 Series it should be this the store page has a different box, but i guess its just an older image or something

Case:

LC Power Pro 928B Mechadroid

HDD(i think this doesn't really matter much but i decided to post it anyway):

1TB WD Green WD10EZRX

I'm also getting considering getting some random DVD reader/writer because why not. I'm really interested what you think about the case, does it have an ok airflow and would it be enough to get a 120mm fan in front and 80mm fan in back or do i need more fans. Also would my CPU be fine without overclocking with stock cooler or do i need to buy a cooler for it as well.

Any thought and suggestions would be much appreciated.

I recommend you a Corsair PSU rather than Cooler Master, a 550W one should be enough, also an i5 if you can get one without getting a lower GPU, if not this CPU should be okay. You also need a Cooler Master CPU cooler for 20-25$, the stock cooler, specially the AMD one is very bad. Yeah get the CPU cooler instead of the DVD reader, because it's more useful.

Edit: also lol, that cheap an R9 280 cost in US.

At this or similar price range i can get Chieftec, Raidmax or 530W Thermaltake or maybe LC power, but when i googled i saw that their 600W PSU is 430 or something so i'm avoiding that one. They don't have any Corsair PSUs in the store.

The only i5s in my budget are Core i5-3330 and Core i5-3350P so the AMD CPU just seemed better.

As for the cooler, do you think something along the line of this or this would do or should i get Hyper 212 EVO?

I don't know about these 2 i5s really, I looked in CPUBoss and says AMD one is better, but usually stuff is better optimized for intel CPUs, also buying an i5 can cost you not just additional 10-20$, but even more because motherboards tend to cost more, but not always the case. And for CPU cooler, the Hyper TX3 EVO, this one is really great, I would say you don't need more than that.

Yeah, Intel tends to be better optimized, but i didn't have much trouble with AMD CPUs before. The motherboards are about the same price but Intel CPUs are more expensive. I'll probably stick with the amd one. Hyper TX3 EVO is just 25$ i can probably get that plus some fans and a VGA to DVI adapter, i need that as well.

You have really helped me, thanks a lot!

First time I see someone saying that a cooler is more useful than a DVD reader O.o

I kinda understand where hes coming from, with the expansion of digital game and movie purchases, or simply video streaming and the possibility to use a flash drive or an external hard drive, there is hardly any use for a DVD reader. Even so i do use it from time to time, and since my old one isn't working very well i'm willing to buy a new one being that they are cheap.

Last time I used a DVD reader was more than 3 years ago, they're useless nowadays, unless console gamer, even physical copies of games include Steam/Origin/Uplay keys, and movies/TV series/music/anime/videos/etc I can watch online or download, and etc.

And Blue-ray readers are even more useless imo, it's already expensive, and for what? just spend even more money on expensive physical copies of movies, series, music etc? When even if like to watch all legally, you can get a subscription on Amazon Prime, Youtube movies/series, Netflix, etc, will be a way cheaper.

I guess you got a point. I still like to save all my important stuff in physical format, just in case, but yeah, you can use sd cards or something like that... DVD rlz :p

Looks good, buy a better CPU cooler and overclock is what I would recommend. You can also overclock your GPU so if you do that then your PC would e beast.

Does overclocking void warranty if i don't change voltage and just boost clock speed a bit?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unfortunately overclocking does void your warranty. What I would recommend to do, is keep is at it's normal clock speed while you still have the warranty. As your CPU and GPU start to get older and the warranty has expired then go ahead and overclock.

TIP: DON'T change your voltage to much, it's clock speed you want to focus on, putting to much or to little voltage can fry your GPU/CPU. Also take it very slowly, take your time and don't rush it.

it's a great configuration but lacks an SSD. SSDs are awesome, you should really consider adding one to your beast:)

I have another year old HD which is just 500GB but i'd feel bad trowing it away. I'm not sure SSD woudl be worth it since i'd only get a 120 GB one for OS and possibly internet browser.

All you guys saying its a beast brings a tear to my eye, its gonna be the first pc i build (even though the store will probably put it together i still chose the parts) and my 6 year old pc is getting really slow :D

My budget was originally 650-ish $ this costs about 800$ with cooler and everything, so it is really limited. I can buy it but i'm not sure its worth spending that much money for a pc. I'm usually patient but waiting for crap to happen when my pc is processing something can be annoying at times.

Well then, for this PC that I would really consider are just 2 things that are very important to change, get a CPU cooler, like the Hyper TX3 EVO no need for more expensive, and different better PSU, also more Watts not means is better. Other things like i5 and SSD very optional.

I don't know much about PSU manufacturers, but from what i know Cooler Master is an ok manufacturer, do you think it would be better to get Chieftec, Raidmax or Thermaltake?

Seasonic, Corsair, EVGA, Antec, Cooler Master, XFX, etc are good or fine. Never heard of Chieftec.

Also check here the AMD recommended PSUs

Be sure the PSU has the needed: 1 x 6-pin + 1 x 8-pin connectors for the GPU, normally this PSUs have 2x 6+2 pin, that can be used as 6 or 8 pin, this is what you need.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks! I already saw that link, and all PSUs that i'm looking at have 2x 6+2 pin and all appropriate protection and stuff if that even matters

EDIT: Oh btw none of these Seasonic PSUs are on the recommended list

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Seasonic is still a very trustable brand. They make their own PSUs, you can also check this guide to see the brand and manufacturer, because for example Corsair doesn't makes their own PSU, other manufacturer makes them to them, but this doesn't means it's bad.

Ok, i need some help on the PSU since sviat said Cooler Master B2 Series 600W isn't very good, how are these as an alternative 600W Raidmax Cobra or 530W Thermaltake Smart SE SPS-530M Modular or 500W Fractal Design Essence Black or 700W Chieftec GPS-700A8 or 600W Chieftec GPS-600A8 or 600W LC Power SilentGiant, LC6600GP2 V2.3 I could also get the Thermaltake smart modular 630W if that means something

That should be enough choice to find something decent. There are of course some other cheaper and presumably crappier PSUs, but i decided not to include those, i can buy a bit more expensive, but its mostly same manufacturers but higher power. Again any advice of thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If it would help and if somebody feels like rummaging through the site i could link you the PSU section of the store site, but i doubt somebody would go through that much trouble for me :D

Personally, I'd go with a SeaSonic or rebranded SeaSonic PSU. They make some of the best out there. XFX PSUs are rebranded SeaSonics, so they'd be a good choice.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The thing is these PSUs cost around 70$ give or take and Seasonic one is about 120 which seems ridiculous for a 600W PSU. I managed to find a PSU that apparently Seasonic makes under the brand Antec but thats from another store so i'm not sure what would happen if something in my computer breaks being that its 2 different stores. I might even cough up the money for Seasonic if there is no other quality option

Comment has been collapsed.

XFX PSUs tend to be in the $60-80 price range, which are made by SeaSonic. I do believe Antec PSUs are also rebranded SeaSonics, so they should be good to use. If something in your PC breaks you tend to contact the manufacturer anyway. Or you just send that single part back to the store to check for faults, who'll then decide whether to replace it or not at their own discretion.

My PC parts were all purchased from various retailers, and earlier in the year my GPU had a fault. I contacted XFX who told me to contact the retailer, who then asked me to send the GPU to them. They checked it over and found a fault, so sent out a replacement.

It shouldn't matter where your parts are purchased from if they go wrong, since you only need to send back the broken part.

I'm actually buying at a retail store and they have their own service or whatever its called (at any rate i bring the pc to them if its under warranty and they will fix it) or at least i'm pretty sure it works like that.

Also i don't think they sell XFX PSUs in my country at all same as Corsair

U need an aftermarket cooler for that CPU, AMD CPUs overheat like crazy and their stock coolers are garbage. Also that Hard Drive is absolute trash, u need a faster one, at least a WD Blue.

I'm getting Hyper TX3 EVO that was suggested as good but cheap Cooler. Thanks for the HD suggestion, WD Blue is 2 $ over Green, Green is on sale its normally more expensive so i figured that might be ok, i'll get Blue then. Hey at least its not Seagate :D

Any thoughts on the PSU?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Definitely go for Blue and not green. Spending that extra $2 is worth it. The only case the green is going to come at an advantage is if your going for power savings. Even if you are, the green will barely save any power with the rig you have. So get the Blue. I have no idea about the PSU though.

I wasn't even aware what the colours mean, i'll be getting the Blue one for sure and thanks for the overclocking tips i'll probably overclock in a few years when the warranty expires

That's quite a decent build. You don't need an aftermarket CPU cooler if you don't plan on overclocking. You can add an aftermarket cooler after some time when you have money though, if you want it.

That hard disk, get a better one. Like the person above me said, at least a WD Blue. WD Green is very slow.

Ah yes, I remember now that this happened to me too, my friend was suggesting me buying this HDD when I chose another with 7200rpm, but hopefully at the last time we saw the mistake, and I got the 7200rpm.
But apparently Newegg doesn't show it's 5400rpm, that's weird, anyways, buying a 5400rpm HDD is a very bad idea, 7200rpm is the good one.

Could you give us a budget + region + reason to get PC + (optional) prefered store where to buy all this?

I mean picking together all parts is nice and dandy, but if you include some shipping, it sometimes sucks, gettin' them from different places

Also, tell us what you'd really wanna do with it, and what your top limit on budget is!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Lets say my top limit on budget is 800$, i could go a bit higher, but i don't want to if not necessary. I live in Serbia and i'm mostly getting a gaming pc, but i'll probably use matlab a lot for college but that shouldn't be a problem because my current, much worse pc can run most simulations fine. There is no shipping included, and just for the reference this here is the store page with PSUs, the price in dollars is if you remove the last two numbers (divide by 100 or whatever you'd like to call it), so for example if something costs 6799 of our magical currency, it would be 68$. I set the page by price and the first few are ether fans or some very bad PSUs so i skipped those.

The store has decent prices, and unlike every other store in my country doesn't add about 100$ to GPU prices while keeping everything else ok so its a decent store, and i don't want to go through the trouble of ordering something and then possibly paying taxes, fines, getting DOA products, maybe even getting a things in a completely bashed up box or something and if i can also avoid mailing the component in case somethings wrong thats awesome.

Sorry if i'm a bit too picky :D

I decided to wait a bit before buying the pc if the new 300 series AMD GPUs come out soon i might get a better GPU or at least this one cheaper.

I was looking at the prices and noticed that for about the price of FX 8320 and cooler i can about buy Intel Core i5 4590, would that be a better choice? I know it has better single core performance, but since PS4 and XBOXONE have 8 core CPUs shouldn't game get better optimised for more cores? Anyways if i do buy it i about have a choice of a few motherboards taht seem decent buy aren't too expensive

MSI Z97 PC Mate

Asus H81-GAMER

H97 Gigabyte GA-H97-HD3

ASUS B85-PLUS

Whats your thoughts on this and please give me some arguments too if you can :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Single core performance is higher by ~40-50% clock for clock. FX-8xxx CPUs aren't really "8 cores"; they have 4 modules that are each more similar to 1.5 cores than anything else.

The new consoles have 8 weak, weak Jaguar cores running at fairly low clock speeds. I doubt any optimizing they do for PC could offset the sheer performance difference.

Z97 if you're going to overclock. H97 if you aren't.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then i'll really have to consider going for Intel CPU. I can't overclock it its not a 4590K, but both motherboards are the same price, which would be better then, does MSI Z97 maybe have some useful feature Gigabyte H97 doesn't?

EDIT: I checked the available mobos and at most i could get ASUS H97-PLUS if its worth it. Also to point out if it wasn't clear i won't be overclocking the i5 and i will not buy a cooler, if i chose to buy Intel i will use stock cooler.

That makes me feel a bit better knowing how unoptimized Ubisoft games are (yes, i know Far Cry 4 isn't as horrible as some games, but its still not very good). It turn out i can't get i5 4590 since its too expensive, i might be able to get i5 4460 but AMD build is still a bit cheaper. Bottom line is i don't think CPU will be much of a bottleneck since most games are much more GPU heavy

How about this case, is it in your price range?

Good Case

CPU bottlenecking can be a thing nowadays too, depending on the games you play

BF4 for instance loves fast CPU's

Also, take a look at this 800$ build, pretty decent as well

I ended up choosing a different case. Do you think i5 4460 is better than FX 8320? I saw some benchmarks and FX 8320 was better in newer games from what i saw.

That build looks awesome, but they don't have that motherboard in the store at the moment and R9 290 is 400$ here i have no clue why. And we don't have Corsair PSUs in mostly any store here, at least i never saw it

Hard to tell really, some games might prefer the AMD, some the Intel.

Both are good choices in this price range though, wouldn't have gone wrong with either one.

I know the feeling about these prices too :/

Everything I picked in my list here, is basically translated 1 to 1 into Euros in my country, adding additional costs at the top mostly :/

Just used this american site for references and ease of use

Yeah i got it, i'll keep an eye on the price of both CPUs and just decide on one of them i guess. Some things here aren't all that bad, but high end GPUs are almost non existent and prices are ridiculous. Thank you for the help!

Little bit over your budget, but solid build.

Stock cooled though, if you add another 30 for a CPU cooler, it shoots excactly 100$ over budget

Click

The CPU I picked is basically an i7 without hyperthreading, and the built in graphic processor, but very fast CPU.

Also built in a DVD writer, since you said you need one, but that is an additional 15$ on this list.

I left out a "data grave" since you may transfer this over from your old, and instead chose a 128GB SSD.

Let me know what you think of this build

That looks awesome too, but its over my budget. I was considering getting a 120 GB SSD and using my old hard drive, but i'll have to see how good it is, if its in bad shape its better not to risk it.

The huge problem is that in my crappy country we have limited part choice and ordering online is kind of out of the question. I am quite curious though how much i'd pay the shipping and how beat up the hardware would be when it gets through the border.
