This might sound a little bit silly, but I am looking for games that have a lot of downtime where you can just let the game do its own thing without your input for a little while. I got a lot of things that I gotta get done and not a whole lot of time, but I would still like to get some multi tasking backlog fighting done at the same time.

Other than the obvious clickers I am looking for things like:

  • games where you wait for a while for XY to happen (example Flight Sim flying for X place to Y place on autopilot for a while, Bloons TD6 waiting to have enough money to place XY tower, Two Point Hospital waiting for things to happen,...)
  • games with downtime between matches/rounds/... (example CS:GO)
  • games where you can script up some grinding for achievements (example the ridiculous achievements for The Hundred Year Kingdom)
  • games with play this game for XY hours achievements (example Stanley Parable, Tabletop Sim,..)

I will not be buying any new games, just gonna play games I already own, but please suggest any games as who knows, maybe the suggestion helps someone else.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions <3

You're welcome :) I haven't played Dorfromantik but there is probably no idle aspect to it! It does look very relaxing with no time limit though if you want a break in the background every so often!

All of those games except Garden In have been in bundles/choice and you could get them very cheap! They're pretty much like a set-up and wait for things to be made or events to come! I may find more in my library and add them here :)

Yea, I will keep an eye out for more bundles with them. Tho Autonauts I refuse to buy out of spite at this point. I have entered over 430+ giveaways (by far the most of any game) for it and I am determined to win it or die trying :D

Reading this, I figured that "background games" (that aren't clickers or freemium mobile trash) could be its own genre. Who knows, it might just be the next big thing after Vampire Survivors. You heard it here first, folks.

Haha funny you mention Vampire Survivors because that is pretty much what I did with that game after I gotten my hang of it - get a build going and then just sit in a spot and kill everything while occasionally upgrading items :D

Honestly it should be a thing and my dumb brain would be very grateful for it because its a good way to trick myself to get up and actually get stuff done, its sad that it works :(

Same with Stanly Parable that makes you play a whole tuesday or just wait 5 years for a cheevo...

Rimworld would have been my first recommendation too.

No idea if you do like Paradox titles but these do have a hands-off console command, observe. Use it and the game plays all by itself. You quit that mode by selecting a faction via tag command. This way you can let the world/universe run all by itself, occasionally check in and play whatever faction you want.

This works for any of their own games: Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron, Victoria.

How about XCOM®: Chimera Squad, would be "games with downtime between matches/rounds/."
You would have a pause after each mission but you can also pause at any time during the mission as it is completely turn based.

Thank you! Added them all to the list.

Personally I use a mix of BLAEO and completionist.me, but having a lot of games in the backlog its hard to sift through to find exactly what I am looking for. I used this Steam library filter to try to filter games out by tags, but I found it wildly inaccurate with how games are tagged.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Tags won't be accurate anywhere. That's why you can use those filters like player completion % (this usually leads to less quality games) or number of completions (this usually leads to better quality games, might be worth excluding visual novels as a tag because they get many completions by skipping text fast). Something like this: https://steamhunters.com/id/MouseWithBeer/games?state=baseGameCompleted,inProgress,qualifiedButNotStarted,played,untouched&achievements=true&sort=completed&excludeTag=3799 You can try games, 1 by 1 and see what you end up liking.
Completionist.me doesn't remove cheaters, so player completed numbers can be skewed, unlike SteamHunters.

Of course! Here's my shortlist of games that are not really typing hacking games:

  • Cyber Manhunt (has some extra DLCs that add new puzzle types to the game)
  • Song of Farca (literally so amazing)
  • Tech Support Error Unknown (kinda more like papers please than Orwell)
  • Greyhat (not greyhack which is more like bitburner)
  • Hypnospace Outlaw (waiting for Dreamsettler to release)
  • Case of the Golden Idol (not super like it but still somewhat similar)
  • Obra Dinn is a great game in general for the detective genre
  • Case Cracker (currently playing, much harder imo than the rest and has more typing than clicking)
  • Uplink (super low graphic old game but honestly pretty good)

This is literally my favorite category of game but doesn't have its own steam tag and imo doesn't really fall into "hacking" as most-to-all rely on typing and the rest tend to be horror which I'm also not huge on.
If you like the coding ones more than hacknet is always a good bet. That, Hacker Simulator (haven't played this one much tho), or Nite Team 4.

Hey Mouse, how you've been?

  • Faeria Card game, something like Hearthstone. Very fun to play, you can find a lot of playing styles. It also has a lot puzzles so you can easily do other stuff while playing this. Though if you like the game, I recommend all non-cosmetic DLCs. They get -75% on sales. However, the base game is quite fun on its own too.
  • Prison Architect You build your prison and watch things happen. New prisoners come to your prison in periods though. Also after Paradox bought the IP, they ruined it with a lot of DLCs, so I recommend the old Introversion version. :) (You can do this by right clicking on game >> betas >> select "anniversary edition 2018")

Others are already written here so that's it from me.

Please come take our rain instead in that case. Half of my country flooded yesterday (I am not even really exaggerating, they are one of the biggest floods in our history if not the biggest) due to massive rains :( Luckily where I live got spared at least. And this comes less than a week after massive hail storms (we didn't get spared of that one, rip garage roof) and a godamn tornado. So I would very gladly take your heat instead :D sorry for the bit of a rant, it has just been a lot lately.

I wouldn't trade between them, I just want a normal weather. :) I think I got a heat stroke, I've been sick since yesterday. Getting better slowly though. So I wouldn't say no to a little bit rain.
It deserves a rant since this will only get worse for upcoming years, worst part even if we stop all the emissions today, the weather won't change for 20-25 years. :(

Prison Architect is a genius game, I would love to see it as bugless as possible but Paradox happened. I was so glad when I learned I can play the latest Introversion release. This should be a thing for every game.

If you like card games, I'm sure you'll love Faeria too.

We just had the last rain forcasted for the next few hours ago so hopefully it is over now. But now we got snow on our mountains apparently... our mountains are not that high that should have snow in August... I want of this rollercoaster ride.
Yea that would be ideal. Could be please both have that? Thank you. Oh shit, I hope you feel better soon and it doesn't turn around for the worse and your weather also cools down a little.
Yea it is terrifying what is to come. It already feels like the Earth is trying to wipe out of existence (honestly can't blame it), I can't even imagine how can it get any worse actually.

I my opinion you should be able to just play any version of the game ever uploaded on Steam (and I think you used to be able via the Steam CMD?), but I guess that uses up a bunch of storage space.

I don't actually, but I am always willing to give any game a go because you really never know. Thats how I learned earlier this year that I absolutely love Crusader Kings 2 while I always thought I hated strategy games.

It's crazy to see the weather is so unstable all around the world while the Earth is getting warmer any day.
Thanks, I'm getting better after loaded myself with minerals and probiotics, took some time though. I guess today was the hottest day comparing to the next week, maybe it gets a little better.
Humans are bunch of resistant bastards so we try to adapt rather than fix things. I wish it was the other way around. I already hate post-apocalyptic worlds in games, definitely wouldn't want to see a real one.

Yeah I think I remember to do that via Steam console but I agree, I wouldn't blame them if they don't want to store all of the builds. Though they could keep the major releases at least.

Heh, finding a game that you love from out of your regular genres feels good to be honest. That occurs kinda rare for me but I love to give them a chance too. Ending up hating an overwhelmingly positive game doesn't feel good but welp. :3

Oh by the way, people who like Crusader Kings usually also like Mount & Blade. Maybe there is a pattern here. :D

Sorry for the super late answer, been a busy week.

Glad to hear you are feeling better (I hope that is still the case) and I hope the weather has chilled out since.
Yup, humans godamn suck, badly.

Yea, some games do that by using the "beta" system and its great. More games should do it and Valve should have an official way to do it. But I don't think we will ever see that.

Yea, doesn't happen often to me either (I play a lot of absolute trash after all) but it soooo good when it does.

Never played nor do I own any of the Mount & Blade games, but if I ever get my hands on one I will make sure to give it a go.

It's okay, real life first. :)

I'm fine now but took me one week to get completely better, never been sick like this since Covid.

Weather seems kinda fine since it might rain today but it's still hot enough to melt me down. We don't have enough trees in city to cut the hot weather and fires take down them faster than we plant.

Well, at least it's a workaround and works fine even if that's not an official way.

That happened to me with Binding of Isaac. I kinda hate roguelikes and a friend introduced Isaac to me and I actually enjoyed it.

If you ever want to try Mount & Blade, skip the first game and go for Warband (it's just the polished version of the first game with more content and better graphics) though its graphics are old even for its age but that's not the point anyway.

Well, letting Twitch chat choose what to play can be fun, at least the trying out part. Actually trying to play horrible games maybe not that much. :)

No, its not fun, because they always pick stuff they know I would hate (jokes on someone when it came to CK2 lol and now most likely EU4 too). I just spent 25 hours to finally beat AltF4 just to be gifted AltF42 right after :( Both love and hate those people sometimes :D

Ohhh yea I saw that like 3 days ago. I needed to know the Linux playtime of something and went to SteamDB and the section was gone, thought it was weird that they would remove that. So I did an API call that I was 99% sure was returning Linux playtime before and nope, nothing. I looked it up but couldn't find anything relating to it online. Do you happen to know if they said anything why? (Since its Valve I assume probably not)

Thank you!

Yeah that happened with the latest API change. I asked this to support but they replied with "Steam Support does not answer questions about API change" so I didn't ask any further. I presume I was one of the hundreds of people asked this and it felt like they got tired of this question. Though I tried again twisting it but once they notice it's about API, they won't reply about that and change the topic to "if you have any more questions...". So no use.

For some weird reason, they're not open about this.

Not sure how much hands off I could manage with it as I remember it being quite hard (but I last played it 7+ years ago), but I will put it in my to play list simply because I really enjoyed the game so even if it doesn't work out I don't mind picking it up again. Thank you for the suggestion!

Came here to recommend Banished.

Once you set up a little bit, you can just let it run.

Can't really recommend Banished for this purpose. For a casual player it's hard. If you learn the mechanics then sure it turns into an easy game where you can do whatever. But it still requires at least a bit of constant attention even with disasters turned off because of how the demographics work in the game.

I would just like to thank everyone for the suggestions once again. I now have a list of 21 games to clear through next when I want to have something running in the background (+1 that I have already completed in the mean time - Poly Towns). But if you got any more suggestions please keep them coming!

Considering you mentioned games with downtime between rounds Team Fortress 2 came to mind (free 2 play)

In normal matches theres the setup time, and with the latest summer update came the official saxton hale mode (asymetric big team vs 1 player boss)- and this mode in particular theres no respawn, so one could be waiting for awhile for a match to end while spectating.

But TF2 came to my mind first because of some casual maps and how the community dont really bother with wining/finishing matches on then- 2fort in particular is a map so broken(very hard to end the match) folk play it as a sort of endless deathmatch for fun, but you frequently see people just tauting/dancing or whatever around. The community maps (player hosted games) are 50% non-serious idling and killing time- from endless maps like 2fort and hightower to trading servers...

Its my got to game to kill time- i love the game and playing for wining, but when i just want to kill time i just jump on one of those maps or servers and do whatever- including just taunting/stopping somewhere why i go eat something or whatever

And heck, the engineer class core base is pretty much waiting, even more so in certain gamemodes or maps- youre meant to build a defensive turret to protect the objective but it can be sabotaged by enemy spies or destroyed quicker unatended... Good engineers optmize their time and learn how to leave their safety nest and be back to defend their base in a pitch, but on defense just keeping watch of your sentry is playing right and doing whats needed... i got a taunt that is sitting on a beach chair drinking beer just to tell im idling as engineer

Oh and i almost forgot- Planet Crafter, Satisfactory and Subnautica.
In Satisfactory theres nothing to lose doing nothing (and numbers/resources keep going up), while the other two have modes where food/water are non issues. Both satisfactory and planet crafter have a bunch of buildings that generate things over time- subnautica have less of those

It has been a looooong time since I last played TF2. I heard there was an update, but didn't know what exactly. But yep, this and especially the new mode you mentioned seems to be exactly what I am looking for, thank you! It is now on my to play next list as well as there is also still many achievements I am missing too, thanks!

The rest I sadly (or not so sadly in case of Subnautica, that game is literally my worst nightmare lol) don't own, but I have added them to the list in case it helps someone else in the future, thanks!

Oh god, another game I haven't touched in about forever (8 years to be exact). Thanks for the suggestion, added it to both my personal and the generic list!

Two games for me: Parkitect and Megaquarium.

Get a park/aquarium going, let it run... come back to a lot more cash.
