SSDs seem to have suddenly got a lot cheaper(?) I've just ordered a Samsung 830 256gb for about £150 + a mounting kit to put it in the optical drive bay of my laptop.

There's a roundup of SATA 3 SSDs on The Register which I only read after placing my order but might be useful for one of you folks. I believe the list prices quoted are all quite a bit higher than you'd pay after shopping around.

But ssds are not ment to be used as a media/back up drive. Its ment for mostly heavy reading. IE OS/games.

Great choice with the Samsung 830, don't trust those OCD's!
I'll get myself a 128GB one for my Windows partition, don't really need more space on it as its just for a few basic programs. Movies music games and stuff will still end up on my Samsung 1 TB HDD.

Nice, I went for 256gb just in case I decide to keep the bluray drive in this leptop instead of running both the SSD and my current 450gb HDD. Would love a 512gb SSD but they're still crazy money.

Not worth for me. Still expensive and sdd techonology is not good yet. Too few write cycles for normal use

The reason why it's going cheaper is because of the poor demand (law of supply and demand)

Really? I thought they were selling more and more, sales of Mac Airs and Ultrabooks are pretty good from what I hear + some cloud providers are installing huge SSD arrays.

Ya, prices do not drop because there is a rise in demand. Relatively speaking, more poeple are buying SSDs, however the supply to demand ratio is on the rise. As new technologies for SSD are created and released, the older ones are left in warehouses collecting dust. Thus you have sales of the "old" stock.

Purchased a 64GB Crucial M4 to go with my current build. Looking to upgrade all three of my laptops to SSDs, and eventually add another 128GB M4 to my build for back-up.

By the time I get my new rig all set up, I will prob be able to afford a set of SSDs for a RAID 0 config.

Welcome to the world of PC's where a 300 dollar part will probably be 100 dollars 2 days after you buy it.

You mean you don't want/need one in your desktop? Or just can't afford it at the moment?

That's some magic right there.

Can't afford it right now, I'm currently in the time between the military service and studying and preparing for the university and in austria you won't get much for the six month at the military xD

If anyone's got use for Norton Ghost v15 the copy that came with my drive is almost certainly going spare, I bought Paragon SSD Migrate to be able to exclude folders from the copy.

Love the way defragging is described these days: "Garbage Collection remedies this by combing through the Swiss cheese of data left behind, collecting any data and carefully placing it together."
