I've always considered treating people unequally because of who they love or desire to be one of the most stinging injustices around (subjectively; you can't really grade these things on a scale). I remember the day my country legalized same-sex marriage as one of the very few that I felt proud of it, as I'm not normally given to patriotic feelings.
Even so I used to consider the idea of "gay pride" weird and uncomfortable, because your sexual orientation is something you're born with, not something you chose or achieved, so why would you display pride in that? Pride is something you take in the good that you've done, and displaying pride for what you are not only seems to devalue the idea of pride itself, but also seems like an invitation for focusing on idolizing your own in-group at the expense of inclusiveness towards others.
It was kindly pointed out to me that "pride" in this sense is better understood as the antithesis of "shame", and in hindsight that was a bit of an embarrassing light bulb moment for me. The whole point is not in celebrating that you're gay, but celebrating that you dare express that you're gay in the face of disapproval, both external and internalized. No pride would be necessary if no shame was attached to it, but there still is, even in societies that can at least boast equality in the eyes of the law (and even that is not a given in many parts of the world). If, after that insight, gay pride still makes you uncomfortable (or worse), then that alone probably demonstrates why it should be a thing in the first place.
So with that in mind, I became a card-carrying flag-waving pride supporter overnight (well not literally for any of those things, but still) and I've given my avatar a lick of paint for the first time this year. I make no illusions that that achieves much of anything in the grand scheme of things, but if it reminds even one person who might have otherwise been unaware (deliberately or not) it'll be pixels well spent.
Oh and of course something for your troubles:

Thank you for being so open minded and for the great explanation for why Pride Month is a thing. :)

I wish there was no need for pride month. Not that you shouldn't celebrate but I'd rather everyone on the world would finally accept that people are different and as long they don't hurt anyone it's ok.
Sorry, all that hate, all the shit going on, it just makes me sad. Rough year, huh?
At least Costa Rica allowed same-sex marriages.

We have the same here in Poland. The presidental elections will take place in two weeks and Andrzej Duda, our current president who runs for reelection, constatly says LGBT is some kind of "ideology" and that he, as a president will fight it. Because it is something wrong and the children need to be protected from it! (you can read more here. It's unimaginable, it's 2020 and people still refuse to understand that being gay (or other part of LGBT) is normal and seeing two people of the same sex holding hands won't destroy the world.
I'm happy for your country and I hope we Poles will achieve it someday.

I feel you. And there will always be politicians trying to use that to get the bigots voting for them but I still believe it's a good thing that, for however long it lasts, marriage equality is not institutionalized. It will change minds in the long run, with younger generations maybe but it will change minds.
A lot of people who think they don't know anyone who is LGBT equate government disapproval with marriage equality (or other things) being wrong.
It was the same in France when they passed laws allowing abortion and when they passed a law to abolish the death penalty. Those were not popular laws. Over 80% of people were against them. The elected officials who fell on their sword to get the laws voted didn't have much of a career after.
Still, only 15 years later, a generation really, the polls results were totally different and over 50% of people were against the death penalty and for a woman's right to choose. Now the numbers are even higher than that.
So it's a victory and a small step toward a change of belief even if people are not for it now.

Thanks for the thread!
I usually do attend some pride parades every year, at least those that aren't too far away, but thanks to COVID-19 they have been cancelled (which is the right thing, I wouldn't have attended this year anyway).
I'll probably try to be at the Cologne pride this year since they rescheduled it to autumn, depending on how the COVID-19 situation continues until then.
Anyway, those are all spare keys I got for now; I'll add more if I get hands on more keys during the month. :)

I wish i could whitelist you twice . but you were already on it for a while now.

You mean you think 5 people blacklisted you because you mentioned you where trans? I didnt mention I was trans and I got 5-6 blacklists probably from this thread too.
I think my comments where fairly neutral so it doesnt really matter what you write in political threads. If you are seen, you will most likely get at least one.

I didnt mean to give you the expression that I was trans since Im not. (if that was the reason you just whitelisted me)
My point was that pretty much everyone receives blacklists and more so in political threads, no matter of who you are or what you believe. You shouldnt read too much into it.

Yeah, posting giveaways has actually made me receive a few BLs. This from three years ago must have been the funniest one I received. Or the asshole that necroed the same thread over 20 days after it was over and then responded with a BL after I asked him if he was joking. :)

Accepting your opinion and not wanting you to participate in their giveaways are two different things though.
Also, some people may not want to get into an argument, yet want to express their disapproval of your opinion and choose the blacklist option. Personally I respect your opinion although I don't agree with it.
My hope is that you will read through some of the articles, or even some comments, people have posted in this thread so that you can understand why the whole Pride 'thing' is important and happening in the manner it does.

Hello everyone .
Its June, which is what many of you already know to be Pride Month. The title of the thread should have clued you in , that is if you know how to read.
ππππππ
For the uninformed and those who wish to learn more
ππππππ
June marks the beginning of a series of events that take place over the month ranging from MASSIVE PARADES to small informational kiosks. with people all around the world uniting in standing up for the LGBT+ community , no matter their nationality ,race ,age , or even sexuality. Well , due to Covid19 there has been some changes. Most events have been moved online , delayed , or out right cancelled.

Upcoming confirmed events.
π³οΈβππ³οΈβππ³οΈβππ³οΈβππ³οΈβπ
i would like to think of this as a chance to be honest. some of you might be too scared of physically going to an event or you just dont have the means to do so. So checking out online events should be much easier and maybe even preferable to you.
