Is Morrowind a good game, or just overrated with nostalgia?

I hated Morrowind,boring as Sh***,even the mods(which are actually very good) dont help this game (for me).

Short answer: By what you say, I think you would probably get more satisfaction in another game. And I personally think Oblivion is a worse game.

Still don't make the mistake of thinking its success is because of nostalgia alone.
When it came out it really set new standards.

You had a HUGE world to explore (still big by today's standards) in a graphic comparable to the FPSs of those days (I remember how I liked to walk around in rain and watch at the ripples in the water <- THIS is actual nostalgia: today it looks like crap).
There was a great attention to details (small silly example: you could find plates and tablecloths stored in a private house's cupboard).
NPCs had a little day routine (one of the first quests was to follow a guy at night to discover his stash).
It was among the first games to really use MP3s so that every single line of speech is voiced (no more "this guy has a voice, he'll give me quests", which used to break the magic a little).

Most importantly these were not only "tech stuff" made to show off. The whole idea behind the game (as I felt it) was to create a live world and give you complete freedom in exploring it.
You could really do whatever you wanted. Completing the main quest and become "the one" (booooooring ^^), lurking around, stealing stuff from houses and hunting rare books, meet gods... KILL gods! :)

On top of that you were given the same tools Bethesda used to make the game. Look at how many weapons, armors, quests, charachters and even mechanics were added during the first years already!
Sandbox games are very popular today. Morrowind had that already. :)

All these aspects have been incorporated and improved in most games that came later so that Morrowind, played today, would feel rudimentary and a bit empty.

Again: by what you say, I think you would probably get more satisfaction in another game.

I would say that it's a bit overrated, but most of the Bethesda games are.

I like both Morrowind and Skyrim, but each of them has different strengths and flaws.

Skyrim is huge and varied, Morrowind is big but empty and offers less interaction.
Skyrim has a standard viking fantasy feel, Morrowind is more mystical.
There's a lot of different animals in Skyrim, but most of them are ordinary creatures like deer or bears. Morrowind has like, five species?... But they're all unusual, it's almost like the developers were forbidden to design anything barely resembling a real world animal.
Skyrim has better level-up system, the one in Morrowind is needlessly complicated and requires a lot of outside-source reading.
But Skyrim's quests are too easy, with fast travel and an arrow basically pointing to a destination. Oh, and no journal. Finding right places in Morrowind was difficult, but I enjoyed following the clues in journal. It was also more climatic and I loved the big travel bugs (what was their name, striders?).
Everyone in Morrowind is ugly. Everyone in Skyrim is... well, still ugly, but a lot less.

It's basically the matter of preference, you should think what aspects of Skyrim you enjoyed and compare them to what people say about Morrowind.
And I would give a lot to see a game that combines the good points of both Morrowind and Skyrim. Bethesda, don't disappoint me?...

It's lot less streamlined than modern games. Which when it comes to quest desing isn't a bad thing... Inventory is superior, but graphics are dated even if the world offers much for variety than later games...

I would say, no Morrowind is not overrated. However its not for everyone due to it has NO handholding at all in the game. It was the same for Daggerfall. If you like the handholding thing, you will like Oblivion and Skyrim more than the others. To me Oblivion is actually the worst in the series. ( Do keep in mind, I have not played through it's expansion Shivering Isle. Did not like the base game enough to buy it. ) Skyrim to me is better than Oblivion.

Did not care for the main "storyline" and it was too damn easy, more so than Skyrim. That, and after a while even the normal bandits will start wearing the best gear in the game if you don't use mods. Was soo stupid. They where still easy to kill but the loot they dropped was way too high for what they where.

That being said. To me Daggerfall is the best in the series. Morrowind 2end. Arena was not a bad game at all but I do not remember much of it anymore so it is hard for me to place it anywhere lol. Due to that, to me, Skyrim would be 3rd.

I've played Skyrim for all of ten minutes on Xbox, while I spent the better part of a year playing/replaying Morrowind. Will likely end up getting Skyrim on PC solely for Skywind.

Morrowind was probably good for its time, and for some must have much nostalgia. However I did not play the game in those times, but would very much like to. In the end I always end up a few minutes in trying to stab myself in the eyes because the combat frustrates me. One day I might give it an honest run when I feel more patient and understanding.
