For my (I think) 55' I am about 3 feet away. Some games are so bad with subtitles I have to get like a really close to read (around a foot away). Now my older TV in the bedroom I can be 6-7 feet away and be about the same as my newer. Just depends on aspect ratio and few other settings that can improve or worsen the text on different TVs. Just play around with it some to try and see if you can find an optimal setup for gaming, and another for regular TV.

It differs from game to game but I can say I play about 2 meters away from the tv. Tv is about the same size as yours. Its all about getting used to playing games with some length between you and the screen. From the nes times I played console games up to ps4 and still have the same problem when I dont play console for a while and return to it from pc.

See, the graphics and everything are fine. I'm used to watching TV from that length, so the visuals aren't the issue. I just can't read that far away. I'll have to keep an eye on how it changes wrt how often I play pc vs console, now that I have one.

that sounds like a large size, a lot of people have smaller tvs (which results in a smaller relative image, increasing the chance of how far they have to be), need the right ratio calculation that gives a number for how large the image is relative to your eye... i forgot the math
personally i like to immerse myself, i sit a little over forearm (elbow to fingertip) length away from my 24" 1920x1200 pc monitor & have the ps3 hooked to it
now... the other issue is ps3, most games are 720p, some are even lower than that, so they will be blurry or pixelated, making things hard to read or spot in game (unless it intelligently makes the interface 1080p)
if you have poor vision then there's not much choice, sit wherever feels right, enjoy the added immersion of being up close

I don't mind being immersed, I always lean into my PC, but I'm at my desktop with a nice chair. Sitting on the ottoman to be closer to the TV is supremely uncomfortable, as I have a bad back, sciatica, a few other issues. As I said, getting old D:

Yeah, it's mostly the arrangement of the room, it's set up wall > tv > ottoman > couch > computer desk > computer chair, so that while I'm at my computer I'm behind the couch and can still watch tv. So there's nowhere for gf to sit to play on the computer monitor with me /:

Check the settings. You might have to dabble with the "mode" or any of those "picture enhancement" crap.

Around 3 meters far, give or take.
My eye sight is nearly perfect, but when I play Skyrim on my hd tv (which size I'm not sure, around 50 inch). It's hard to read some weapon descriptions for example, no problems with subtitles or anything else.
I also played on pc till now, here's a tip: it's actually not empty bullshit to play in a well lit room and/or take breaks every hour (and a half) or so. If I play for a longer period in the dark room my vision actually gets blurry for a few minutes if I leave the room or turn on the lights. Never had this before, guess I'm getting old too.

seems like a game is badly designed if you need to get that close, on my 27" CRT I sit at least 2 meters away

+1 for beanbag. Console/HTPC gamer's best friend.
I don't know how well it would work with OP's sciatica though.
Another alternative is to get a 1080p projector. They are getting pretty cheap and then you can throw a 120" image no problem (provided you have the space). It also makes home movie nights pretty awesome, and gaming kind of like being on a holodeck.

ahhhhh yessss I used to live with some friends who had a projector, it was awesome. I have one that I'm borrowing from work but it's low quality, I might get a nice one someday though.
I didn't think about a beanbag, either way it would be better than sitting on the ottoman with no support...

I play my pc on my 46" and sit about 4ft away. I've always played console games the same way. Devs need to have better options on in game text. Sometimes I'll stand in front of the tv and play too.

lol Ya it's not that band standing and playing sometimes.

I'm about 5 feet from my 40 inch tv that I play my PC games on.
Find it alright for the most part. One big exception is when I play one of the Football Manager games. I run those 1366x768 instead of 1080p so I can read all the text more clearly. There's the occasional other game I mess with but by and large I don't find the need to tweak anything.
General computer use and browsing is a different story. Outside of gaming I set the screen resolution the same as I do in Football Manager and even then I find myself zooming in on web pages quite a lot, depends on the site. SG is fine at 100% for example, but youtube I zoom in to 120%.

I know that life too, lol. I had a (NEW) pair about a year ago that broke after I had them for a month, I think that was october. had to switch back to old pair (with old prescription) until January when my mother finally bought me a new one.

Wearing glasses since freaking kindergarten, I know the struggle too well... Used to sit about 2-3 meters from my 32" TV while playing. But now I use my 23" PC monitor, since I had to leave the TV at my parents' place.

When is the last time you had your eyes checked? I mean, seriously. If you also drive and can't see stuff properly without realizing it you could be a hazard to others, especially at night. I play my xbox360 at 720P on a 40inch HDready tv and sit about 6 feet away/ 2 meters away. Granted, some text is quite difficult to read, depending on font style, size and colours but I'd say I can read 95% with no problems. And I wear glases ;)
Also, switch off all kinds of enhancements on the TV for the PS3 input as they mess around with the image.

I make sure to get my eyes checked at least once a year. When I was younger my prescription was changing around every six months, over the years it's gotten to around every two years. The last time I went in was about a year ago, so yeah I guess I'm due for another checkup. It's mostly just game text that I have an issue with, though!

So you've discovered the same thing that apple spent massive amounts of money on, mainly marketing money? That which they call "Retina".
Retina is a marketing term used by Apple that basically means that you won't see the individual pixels if you use your device from the distance that they expect you to use it from.

When i was a kid and my gaming was done on my ps1 i was used to be able to sit far from tv like 3-4 meters far (sorry dunno the feet system) but from 18 mostly i started gaming on my pc more and more till i joined the pc master race nowdays when i try to play a game on my ps3 i too find it hard to sit far from tv its not that i cant really see but its the feeling i cant see and i miss things nowdays i can be as far as 1.5 meters max to feel comfortable there is a chance you are so used to be near the screen when playing games btw do you also have problems with seeing a movie at your tv? if not its not your eyes

That's one of the reasons I don't like playing on a TV. I probably sit about 10 feet away while watching something and around 5 feet while gaming. I can sit a little farther away if playing a racing game.

+1
Exactly same setup here (with an Xbox 360), I had a couple of difficulties playing Assassin's Creed games since the font is super small, but I ignored most of it and kept focusing in gameplay instead of those details.
I guess you might have to crank up the volume or use a headset if you can't read the games text properly reas, also try to have some back lighting (a ceiling or living room lamp maybe) to avoid straining your eyes too much due to the TV's brightness.

Oh crap... on PC I would suggest a mod perhaps, but on console... you can only stick closer and have a good back lighting to avoid getting blinded I guess! Good luck :]

I just got a PS3 this weekend, and I'm having some issues seeing the TV. I've been playing almost exclusively on PC since 2008, and I've always had poor vision. Playing Diablo 3 was okay, though I missed a few text cues here and there. I just started playing Dragon Age: Inquisition today, and in order to read everything (including subtitles, my hearing is shot) I had to move about two feet closer to the TV, sitting on the ottoman instead of the couch. I think I'm about 3-4 feet from the TV now. I was wondering if this is normal for console/TV gaming, or if I'm just getting old. The TV is.....somewhere between 50-70 inches. I didn't buy it, my girlfriend did, and neither of us know the dimensions off the top of our heads.
Edit: I played with settings to make the screencaps "large" and it's still super small at the top of the screen. Come ON game devs, you know it's not just kids playing these games!
