You could have been a bit more precise; it's still amazing how many people try to help you despite the lack of information you're giving:
If you can afford it, I would suggest a GTX 560 Ti instead. From the tests I have been reading, it has about 50% more fps in a lot of settings. A GTX 660 Ti is already about as good as a GTX 580 and that's quite a beast! That one should have more than doubled fps.
However, if you're using a small monitor, a GTX 550 Ti might be just fine.
In any way: Make sure that your motherboard do and PSU support your newly bought GPU!

Forget everything posted here. Check these two links. Look at the GFLOP/s rating of each card. Divide that by the price of the card.

6870 is best for your budget at current.
Edit But as a few have stated, ensure you have a good PSU before attempting to replace a weak GPU or an integrated POS GPU. You will destroy your weak PSU if you try to put a potent GPU in the system and it cannot power it. Or if you are lucky, it will just fail to boot instead.
I suggest a 600 watt PSU for any gaming build. More if you want to actually have upgrade capacity. A good PSU can outlast your current system in many cases and be reused. Trust only quality brands like Corsair and Antec and such. Cheap brands lie through their asses about the rating of the PSU and it WILL fail on you and possibly even burst into flames like the garbage e-machines used back in the day.
Disable Anti-aliasing entirely in games. You will not notice it unless you made the terrible mistake of training yourself to notice such trivial details. And antialiasing is ONLY ever needed when game makers conspire with GPU makers to give you a reason to turn you FPS to shit until you buy an overpowered GPU to run AA. Shitty games that include chain-link fences everywhere are what AA is used for. It is a sign of sellouts in the gaming industry.
Some games do not require V-synch to be on. But some do. If the games you play look the same either way, leave it off. But disabling it will sometimes double your FPS.
Unless you have a special monitor, you do NOT ever need more than 60FPS. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron. That is my opinion. You are each free to think I am the moron. Prove it is my reply.
This rant has gone on long enough. Read those links and bookmark them for reference later. Good day to everyone, even the morons. :D

It's at least dangerous to just compare GFLOPS. On your referenced sites for example the HD6870 has more than the GTX580, but surely the GTX580 is better for games.

I find it humorous how he condescends and disregards all other suggestions but his own, and yet following his advice would surely send the OP in the wrong direction....

A 6970 for $700?!?. Where did you buy from, Australia? Even at it's price peak it was ~$350

May not be US dollars?
Seven hundred Zimbabwean dollars wouldn't buy you a Big Mac meal in the US...

Could be. I know Australians still use the $ sign so I really hope he's from somewhere like there or else he got ripped off hardcore.
