I've got an MSI GTX 560 Ti (2GB) and it's a fucking beast. I've yet to see limitations in any of the games I've been playing. I've heard good things about the 1GB version as well (which is what I think you're referring to).

It might be my resolution of 1920X1200, but that card just can't handle stuff like Serious Sam 3 or Metro 2033 at high settings while OC'd. It still beats those console ports.

Are you referring to the 1GB or 2GB? My 2GB does 1920x1080 at 60fps in Serious Sam 3 or Metro 2033 :S I do have the "Overclocked" edition.

It is the 1GB version.

The card is good, but its only a 192-bit card, don't expect good frame rates @ 1920x1080. If you play at 1366x768 / 1600x900 its fine...you will be able to play most games at medium-high settings.

Thanks a lot, everyone!

I will check if I can afford 460/560/660/HD 6870, a lot of people have been recommending these.
Edit: 560 is too expensive, as as the 660.

What's the price for the HD 6870? I can't spend more than 120 euros.

I'm in the UK so not knowing where to look I took a quick peek over at amazon.fr, where a 6870 can be picked up for 150 euros. I really would recommend holding out for a while and saving up the extra thirty euros as you'll be getting a lot more power for the money.

I agree! been using 6870 on my rig since december 2010 until now!
pair it up with a good processor (I'm using i5 2500k @ 4.5Ghz air cooling) and it never let me down on games :)
gonna get GTX 690 as soon as I move out to japan this winter...

Well, a 550 ti performs similarly to a 5770 which performed the same as the 4870 it replaced, so your 4890 is stronger :P, but lacks DX11.

sigh the second person to post this. This is NOT a good benchmarking site, this claims the 570 is better than a 690, when a 690 is nearly 3x as powerful. And there are many other cases like this. It's nowhere near accurate. You're going to make bad purchases if you use that site. This is much better.

I'm gonna updgrade my good ol' 4870 1gb toxic card to a 7770. Since I play in relatively small resolution (1440*900). It's gonna be enough for 2 or 3 years.

Just to let you know the 5770 is better than the 6670. The 7770 = 5670 = 4890. So you will hardly notice any gains in performance

Comment has been collapsed.

Not sure where you got those comparisons for those GPUs,, but a 5670 @ is quite weaker then a 7770&4890. A 7770 = HD 6850 = GTX 460. A 4890 is a bit stronger than a 5770/550 ti.

All depends of your microprocessor too, because if u have a i7 with 6 or 8 GB of RAM u would run all the games in high, anyway run agmes with high graphics its nothing.. u just need 50 constant fps.

Use the HD 6870 or the GTX 560 Ti to play games like MW3 on higest settings, but to play BF3 on highest settings you'll need atleast a GTX 580 or a HD 6950.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A bit odd you paired the 580 with the 6950 when the 560 ti and 6950 perform pretty much the same. My 670 oc'd to 680 speeds keeps my fps above 60, maxed at 1080p in bf3 99% of the time.

The GTX 560 (1GB) is more than capable of running Battlefield 3 on ultra settings. And Modern Warfare 3 is so well optimized it can run with max settings on cards far lower than the 560. Next time, do your research before stating something.

Its a good card especially for its pricepoint despite what a lot of people are saying here.
You can run BF3 at a mix of high and ultra with it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Definitely not high/ultra. Maybe at 640x480. But if he wants to keep above 30 fps on his 1080p monitor he'll be at low/medium'ish settings with no AA(for bf3)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ehh, i play at 1080p mix of high ultra just fine with my 6950 and its basically the same performance (and i have a shitty cpu - phenom 2 x4 945 3.0ghz)

EDIT: I thought it was 560Ti. I'm not familiar with 550Ti, so disregard all i've said

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah I see. Ya the 550ti is pretty crippled compared to a 560ti. I had a 560 ti before my 680 and it played bf3 at all high, no AA and above 50 fps majority of the time. There's not too big of a visual difference between high and ultra in bf3 compared to the performance hit that you receive. But now with my new gpu I don't have to compromise anymore ;)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti, is it good?
Edit: thanks for the suggestions.

Its only a med tier card. the first numer marks its generation and the last two are the important ones up to *50 is full budget cards!! 60-70 is above avg cards and 80-90 is top class cards..

IE. a 290 would be much better than the 550 ti even if its 3 generations back!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not always that black and white necessarily. While a 295 is better than a 550 ti because it's a dual gpu card, it lose to a 580, and the 660ti and 670 beat out a 580. It really just helps to educate yourself on how the cards actually perform from benchmarks instead of relying on the name of it because ya never know with nvidia's naming scheme lol.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It actually is pretty black and white "not total but pretty" ofc you have to take in the generation but not much..

IE.

If you can afford a 470 or a 550 or a 640 its pretty simply to understand that the 470 is the better choice, the generation marks shader upgrades etc and not much other. feel free to look it up yourself.

Benchmarks agree with my statement

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not saying it's not ever the case, but it's definitely not always the case. Yes a 470 is stonger the other two you listed but as I listed , the 295 may be stronger then a 550 ti, but it is NOT stronger than a 580. So your claim that a higher middle number is generally indicative of superior performance falls flat there and could make someone make a bad purchase if they aren't educated on the actual performance of the gpu's in question. Another example, a 280 is weaker than a 470. Benchmarks agree with my statement as well. So again I say, it's not always black and white. But it is for the most part as you said, but there will always be times where someone could make a bad purchase based on the middle number rule. Again I say it's best to actual research the actual performance the card puts out to avoid bad purchases, but if they fail to educate themselves, that's all on them then.

the 295 may be stronger then a 550 ti, but it is NOT stronger than a 580<-- your post

See thats where you fail to understand what I wrote..

I put them into tiers. any 70-95 no matter what generation is better than a 30-50 ! its that simply tbh.. sure inside the "tiers" sometimes the newest is better.. but read my post and understand the tier markings :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well you didn't exactly specify those tiers till now. I was basing my post on the "290 will be better even if its 3 generations back" and well yes, it's that simple for you and me, but not to many many others, that's all I'm sayin'. Also just to be a dick, a 275 isn't better than a 550 ti :P. But really that's the single and only exception and not like it's relevant since 275s aren't being made anymore so no confusion could ensue from that lol. But thanks for the discussion, it curbed my boredom for a bit since I'm stuck at work haha.

the 290 is better then any of the mid tiers :D that was my point ! since the OP wanted information about the 550ti you see a common mistake by buyers is that they think the first number means alot :D I've seen people sell their 280 to get a 450 :D haaha thats pretty stupid

Ouch :/. Doesn't look like this confusing name trend will end though. Just like since AMDs newest GPUs are the 7000 series. I don't know about you, but if I was an uninformed consumer, the number 7000 looks much more appealing than the number 600 by nvidia. They're just trying to exploit the uninformed :(.
