Unofficial "Steam Box" Price and Launch

Xi3 is going to kill this SteamBox idea before the official one even comes out.

Like everything in the PC world, people will have options when it comes to the SteamBox they wish to use. This unique but overpriced rendition of it is just one of many... but unfortunately it appears to be the first one, and will become the subject of everyone's criticisms regarding this project. Even Steam users (if this topic is any indication) aren't quick enough to tell that this isn't the "official" or defacto Steambox, what hope does the outside world have.

I still trust Valve's official box won't make these same mistakes, if it even matters at that point.

I think the price is definetly too steep. This IS a PC and can be used just like any other computer, but the fact that it's designed to be a games console puts it in the competition of much cheaper devices. Still, take into account that the games for consoles are more expensive, so this probably pays off in the long run. And not to mention that you get to play all the titles from Steam inculding PC exclusives.

Maybe the games will run a bit better on it too, since the steam boxes are supposedly standardised so the developers will maybe optimise games for steambox hardware in the future.

It does seem weird that something like this can compete in the gaming market, but never underestimate Gaben. He's a visionary.

If this is legitimate, I was expecting it to be far . . . . cheaper.

Seriously, it was a brilliant concept at first, but if things stay the same, this will just be the new 3DO or Neo Geo: great for bragging rights, not so much for your wallet.

It may sell well if it includes some TF2 and/or Dota2 promo items.

Lol the box is something with the a Steam thing taped on. IDK if its real but its too pricey. If its legit I better start begging for it since it seems to the best of both worlds from Console and PC.

Why do they even need it to be that small. They're limiting their space a lot for no good reason and it's costing 5x more money to make it that small. Everyone would be ok if the system is the same size as a console or a little bigger. Nobody asked for it to be that small anyways.

I'd rather buy a new desktop.

1000 usd. I'd rather buy a PS4... AND a few games for it
