Those games require huge amounts of interaction with people. No no.

There are solitare games! It's even quite common for wargames

The Memoir 44 conversion was quite good, but I'm not entirely sure if I like the way you have to pay for each individual match you play. I would have preferred if you bought map packs instead. The Space Hulk conversion was so-so. It suffered from having slightly awkward controls. As for diplomacy, I actually think it's better online. People are less prone to try getting angry with each other that way ;). I've not played the tabletop version of Civ yet (got it from ebay a short while ago).

First time I saw Diplomacy being played was actually by a friend's older brother visiting from college. It was intense and I couldn't believe anyone would find such a game fun. Little did I know that about a decade later I'd be trying my own hand at running a world power. I can thank board games like Europa Universalis for fomenting my interest in Paradox Interactive which has been one of my favorite gaming relationships ever since. We still fight sometimes but overall things are great:P
I didn't know Memoir '44 was set up that way, I just saw that it was F2P but I should have known better.
SH is enjoyable but it feels like an unfinished product to me.I have fond memories of the board game, hence why I made the purchase.
I don't own Ascension and am not sure I will be buying it unless it gets a deep discount/into a bundle.Still, if you want to do some MP sometime feel free to send a request.
I was told recently that Battlefleet Gothic, GW's space combat wargame, will soon be coming to pc. I am cautiously optimistic.

I've not. I would not be opposed to the idea of playing a boardgame online though. While it can't replace the real thing (the whole social aspect of boardgames is an important part, at least to me), it would at least be a fun way of trying out some new games.

Space Hulk (the first one) is actually quite easy to get to run on a modern system. I tried to play through it a year or two ago, but dang is it hard. Shadow of the Horned rat is a lot harder to play, and it's one of the few old games that I've been utterly unable to run on a modern system (I've even got the notoriously tricky Chaos Gate to work on a modern computer, though with the help of a virtual system).

If you're into Lord of the Rings at all this is one of the best solitaire games I've ever played.

I do like LOTR. Looks interesting game and easy to set it up (compared to what I know about D&D for example) .
And since its playable even by one person I guess it would be fun with two so I can play with my gf .
This thread might has set up my mind on buying a board game.

Are you not from the UK? You have a thriving board game community over there, both when it comes to people playing the games & people making them. It's a niche hobby though, and like with all niche hobbies, you need to look for people who partake in it, it won't be as open as more "mainstream" hobbies.

If you want to play online, here a couple of websites:

Nice collection you have there. Unfortunately lately I'm having trouble finding partners to play with and my collection is quite slim :(
My favourite is Twilight struggle.
Other highlights from my collection are Dominion, Carcassonne, Pandemic (the only one my girlfriend likes) and Arkham Horror.
Citadels and Jungle Speed are great for drunk/friend parties. Dixit is also cool but it depends on who you're playing with.

I love me some board games, I'm with you on that one.
here is some old picture from about a year and a half ago of my collection. its... gotten quite a bit bigger though.
if you want a more complete list... here
Favorites:
By the way, AH cosmic encounter... damn son.

I bought Cosmic Encounter just prior to the FFG release coming out onto the market, and I'm really glad that I did. It seem to be a sought after release of the game these days. I actually plan to get the FFG release, and just use the ships from the AH one (which I think look a lot nicer).
By the way, how is Yggdrasil? I've heard that is supposed to be really hard, but that's the only thing I've heard about it.

Its quite good. Ive probably played it 20 or ao times with my friends over the past few years. I wouldnt say its that hard At its base. The thing about it is that its really modular in difficulty, ie you can add extra ragnarok or angry god cards to the draw deck to imcrease the speed at which one god or multiple gods advance to odins chamber. The best strategy to start off with is to forge weapons to get permanent bonuses to fight the gods with.
Theres a really high tension throughout the whole game where you are moments away from death. Which is great because the whole team collaboratively discusses the next best move.

If you think that board games don't require much interaction, then I fear that you've not played the right games. The "classics" like Monopoly, TP and Snakes & ladders require very little direct interaction, but most modern games do. In fact, in many modern games you try to strike deals with the other players, and you're constantly interacting with them, directly (talking to them in order to find an agreement) or through the game (attacking the other player, using things to trip them up and so on).

It sounds like you haven't played too many board games. There are a ton where each player acts simultaneously, others where the entire game is basically a giant discussion involving everyone. The games that require everyone except the active player to wait around doing nothing are badly designed for the most part. In fact, you'll find most of these "classic" games to be rated very low on bgg.

Some boardgames I really like: Space Alert, Escape, Smash-Up, Game of Thrones, Starcraft the boardgame and Alhambra.

I really like board games but recently I haven't gotten around to playing anything major... Most of my games are still at my parents place, cause if I do get around to playing, it's usually with my friends around there so it's a better base of operation ;)
Are you guys watching tabletop on the Geek & Sundry channel over on youtube? It's surprisingly fun watching "famous" nerds playing boardgames :)

I'm glad someone here mentioned Tabletop, I enjoy that show:) One of my favorite episodes has the author Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicles series y'all) and my dream woman Felicia Day playing...well here it is.

I see Munchkin Cthulhu right there... BEST. EVER. :D

My roommates and I only recently got into board games so our collection is small, but growing. We currently have Coup, The Resistance + Avalon, Pandemic, Castle Panic (regret buying this one. But it was free from a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale), 7 Wonders, Betrayal on House on the Hill

Nice coup! I actually like that game more than the reresistance or avalon. I think its because of its versatility in playtime and number of players though.
And if you regret castle panic, I understand but seriously consider the expansion wizards tower it makes the game much more interactive and creates a more diverse set of situations.

Coup is a little limited in the number of players though. By default if we have more than 6 people playing, we always go for Resistance. Our games can last 2 hours+ because we all play so logically and try to find lapses in judgement.
Castle Panic is just a little boring I guess. It seems like it's built more for kids than adults.
Comment has been collapsed.
Castle Panic is on the simpler side, since it does cater to younger players, but the expansion that Sickfarts mentioned above should add a lot of meat to the game. As this reviewer states here on BoardGameGeek, "The result is a game that is meaner, more involved and ultimately significantly more rewarding than the bland entry-level base offering."

Huh, maybe I'll pick it up next time it goes on sale.

Wow, that's quite a collection! But I couldn't find my favorite among it... So here is my suggestion - Citadels. It's fun, it's VERY interactive, and it could be very intense and smart (probably the wrong word but can't think of a proper one) - depends on your company. And can I visit you and your collection sometimes? ^^ You now, in an off-chance that I'll be in the neighborhood

This is a great thread! I have been tabletop gaming since my childhood best friend's dad DMed my first D&D session over 20 years ago. Unfortunately the group I was most recently playing with has drifted apart due to real life, of course. When we still manage to get together we usually play Eurogames or the sort of stuff Fantasy Flight releases. Our long-time standby is Arkham Horror with all the expansions. Highly recommend this game to everyone because it's one of the most fun co-op games I've ever played.
I used to own a lot more board games along with Warhammer Fantasy Dwarfs, WH40K Chaos Space Marines, Star Wars miniatures battles models, and a plethora of RPG errata (the CSM and SW models thanks to working at a gaming store for a couple of years after college) but unfortunately my collection has dwindled to a respectable amount of D&D 2-3.5 Edition books, Pathfinder basic rulebook, Warhammer Fantasy RPG books, a Necromunda Ratskins squad, sturdy but small collection of WH Dwarf models for whenever I find people to play Mordheim with again, and these board games:Dominion, Battlestar Galactica, Talisman, Lord of the Rings:the Card Game and The Witcher Adventure Game which I won from a contest on the gog.com forums.
I used to frequent BGG a lot more often but haven't logged in for some time. Happy board and tabletop gaming to all!
Edit:I forgot I still have a very old Battletech box from back when the game was produced by FASA, good memories!

That sounds like how I got sucked into the hobby. The year was either 1994 or 1995, and my friends father showed my young self the Swedish pen & paper RPG Mutant. I might not have grasped all the rules, and I might have found the (in retrospect rather simple) math to be confusing, but darn I was hooked.

Generational love of gaming is a good thing to pass on, especially tabletop games as opposed to video games since those are only increasing in popularity.
Of course for the past few years there has been something of a board game renaissance which I hope continues for a long time.

I have a few boardgames. I used to play them with my family. Sadly I only used. Dunno why we still don't do it. And my friends isn't interested in that stuff.

Started up a game of Risk once. It didn't end well. Friend demanded that he should have Poland. We said no. He invaded anyway. Things escalated quickly from there.

As much as I like computer games, I'm actually more into tabletop gaming. Boardgames in particular, but also pen & paper RPGs & miniatures wargames. Are there any tabletop gamers on this forum, and if so, what does your collection look like? Any favourite games?
