dis and brotherhood and Revelations are good too.

Revelations is fine except for the dumb tower defense portions. Thats really the only part of the game that is awful and luckily it doesnt happen a lot. It was a dumb experiment that they rightfully havent revisited. The regular gameplay/story is good.

Just let them take the tower and retake it normally was my method

I've only played a fair bit of the original and the PSP game.
The first game, while okay, suffers from a lot of repetition in missions. I typically quit playing by the fourth chapter every time I make an attempt to play the game.

The first is really only good for the story, assassinations are more frustrating than anything when you can either do the 50/50 odds to work plan they detail or just run up and jumping stab the guy. Combat gets trivial within 5 minutes when you realize how dumb the AI is and you will probably only die to puddles of water.

The overwhelming opinion is that AC1 is mostly "meh", with AC2 being the best or one of the best in the series.

Isn't the AC 1 & 2 bundle a Physical Disk copy? Anyways 2 is pretty good compared to 1

This is actually weird to see posted in the forums, given that i just finished a gaming session on AC3, been struggling to beat this one, it's hella boring compared to others i played so far.
Assassins creed 2 and it's relatives that include Ezio Auditore as the main character are pretty much the best titles in the game franchise. These are: AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations. These games might be worth replaying in the future (i did so with AC2).
Assassins creed is okay in my book. It's not that great but it's worthwhile playing once. It might get repetitive at some point but you'll probably manage to finish it anyways.
Assassins creed liberation, this game... i have mixed feelings. It feels good but the storyline is not the greatest, also it's kinda unique in terms of gameplay compared to others as you use desguises for many different tasks, and each desguise has its own perks obviously. This game's storyline is a little bit tied with AC3, since it's in the same timezone as AC3's storyline events.
I haven't played AC 4 or unity yet, and i don't plan on doing it untill i clear AC3 first which will take a while (since early 2014 and still haven't finished it). While i heard Unity is trying to get success by reverting back to the model of AC2's introduction, which basically didn't quite work well with all the mess Ubisoft as ran into lately. Game might be good or not, but i've seen alot of technical issues with it, i'll be sitting back and waiting on a decent price to buy it at (under 20€).

Rogue is kinda in the trash can for me, i don't really have plans of playing that ever. Unless i find it for less than 5 bucks, i really didn't like the game when i saw some videos.
Ubisoft has to do something new. They need to go back to the roots and see what they did good and replicate that into the new generations while keeping it not entirelly copy pasted material.
Personally i think they should go back to altairs statue room in AC2 (i think), take the story of some of the assassins in that room and work on new AC titles across the world, assassins that used different kinds of tools to kill the opposition. Aswell as following the interests of Shaun in AC3, he states that he had interest of going all the way back to the root of the "series" and learn everything from there up to the present point.

The first one was very innovative and really tried something new. Some of it worked, some of it didn't. The parts in between the missions are insanely repetitive (you're literally doing the same task again, but the character has a different name each time). Water is fatal to Altair. The free-running mechanic was a huge breathe of fresh air for sandbox games, but it still had a lot of wrinkles and issues in the first game. But I think its worth powering through for the story (very good), most of the main missions are solid, and its good to see how the series evolves over time.
I think the ACII is one of the best examples for what to do for sequel. They took out what didn't work, refined what did, and then added to it. Ezio is a great character, its got a great setting, a great story and the gameplay is much improved over the first one. My only criticism of ACII are the damn feathers. If you miss some, don't bother trying to find them later. You'll end up having to go back and check all 100 to find the one you're missing, because it won't even narrow it down for you. I got 97 and it was the only thing stopping me from getting a platinum trophy.

The series gets better when it comes to that later. At least they tell you which town you're missing items, and even allow you to purchase maps to find them, after you've found a minimum amount on your own. I'd have gone back for the last three feathers if there had been a good way to narrow down my search.

AC 1 is kind of repetitive but i liked playing it as i wanted to know where it all began. You might not like how the pacing of the game goes because of the repetition.
AC 2 is better because you have more time to develop an emotional bond to the main protagonist as you are playing through his life, hardships and struggles.

AC1 and AC4 are good.
2 bored me heavily

At $2-$3 its a steal and must buy.
The first one is just alright. As pointed out by other answers, it's extremely repetitious in gameplay (you do the same stuff before virtually every assassination and the side missions are bland). I did enjoy it when I played it as it was such a different kind of experience at the time. Its a worthwhile play especially if you're new to the series, but don't judge the entire series by it. It was improved and refined in other games. It does a great job introducing the Desmond Miles storyline.
AC2 changed it up quite a bit. The characters are much more fleshed out and from top to bottom its just a much deeper experience. It was one of the first times I remember thinking to myself "Damn, the developers listened". The gameplay is varied, and the lead character (Ezio) is arguably the best character in the game's history. I consider it the best of the series in many respects, although I think there have been better locations and more variety in other entries.
I've played and finished all of them except for Rogue at this point which comes to PC next year, I rank them:

I would exclude "a terrible port" from ACIII, as almost every Ubisoft game is a terrible port. Besides, I think it was a good game, and Connor was a cool character in my opinion. The weather system was pretty good, and so they were the great variety of weapons and the naval combats. And I have to ask, what's wrong with Desmond's story end?

I just think they took the easy way out with Desmond. The naval combat was a new mechanic and wasn't bad. The frontier locations were totally empty for the most part and I found them useless and boring areas. I HATED Connor. He was boring and very one dimensional. I just didn't give a shit about him. And yea, I agree about Ubi ports, but III stands out as being much worse than others for me. I hate ACIII.

AC1 is mostly repetitive garbage, but it can serve as an extended tutorial to the core mechanics of the series and will at least explain the general basics of the story. Once you get a grip on AC1 (or get bored) you can quite happily look up the story/spoilers on some wiki then switch into AC2 for a faaaarrrr superior game to the first.
