I'll prefer to boycott Steam after performing this action...

plenty of reasons to boycott steam here: https://www.polygon.com/2017/5/16/15622366/valve-gabe-newell-sales-origin-destructive

Thanks for the info!
Just in time to answer those "I'm losing my games!" threads.

And what exactly are they trying to achieve with this change? Is it another one of their stupid ideas?
Comment has been collapsed.
Someone at Valve must have thought "Hey, our API isn't as broken and inconsistent as it can be. We can half-ass this much better than we're currently doing. "
Comment has been collapsed.
I hated them already. There was no need for them to implement more changes. xD

I'm guessing something to reduce visibility of such games so less people know they exist. That way they aren't advertising games for a company they aren't working with anymore.
Comment has been collapsed.
Advertising them how? We can't even buy them from steam anymore, so does it matter? And even if that was called advertising, then if I'm playing one game that has been removed from steam, won't you still be able to see that I'm playing it? If yes, then isn't that called advertising too? :P

From "my" perspective, they're always implementing stupid changes!

I totally agree with your comment. I call them stupid because they're not to my liking. But they're considered "smart" for Valve, since they're probably benefiting them somehow. Still, a lot of changes end up decreasing their profits, but well, Valve is stupid.
Comment has been collapsed.
i'm not quite sure that this change will threat their profits though. these cuts will mainly and mostly be the concern of "bad" companies with bad games if i understand it right (and i'm too lazy to check those facts), so cutting off ties with loosy bad games would instead give the public a better image of them overall, especially if the random customer isn't to even to come to see them or be aware of them to start with. steamgifts is not much afterall and not everyone here (steamgifts users) will care, let alone even be "meaningfully" impacted by this change in a negative way. but yeah it sucks and it goes the opposite way of what steam profiles are meant for
Comment has been collapsed.
i was mostly talking about this very change. but it's also true for the gifting change. afterall, from the bit i read it mostly affects the gifting as it's used like here in steamgifts, and it looks like it was even targetted to this very practice, and to traders to a lesser extent. again, not really messing up with the random steam customer habits. people, the vast majority of valve customers, just keep buying their games like they always used to, and aren't even aware of these changes and were not even into these "mechanics" to start witth

I wanted to get 100% OJ for a friend back during Summer Sale, but oh no I can't gift it to Australia thanks to the stupid rules and I've other friends who've had similar bullshit come up

I didn't say that this specific change is going to result in negative profits. I was talking in general about the changes they have implemented.

3rd market for games removed from steam. Generally games being "removed" from steam makes them collector's items. By not having them show up in the api as existing less people know about them so less people seek them. Same thing with the badges/backgrounds/emotes. The cards still exist and are tradable but not marketable. It's also entirely possible to trade for scrap/keys/etc which, again, gives this discontinued game or its items value. This change is (presumably) designed to slow that down or deflate it.

Well, for me it fixed at least one problem with dropping booster packs from banned games...
Comment has been collapsed.
Could it be for legal reasons? Presumably the contract their partners signed gives Steam the right to keep providing the game as a download to people who already bought it, but it might not allow Steam to use the game's name in any other way, and either way they might have decided that reducing what they show to the bare minimum of their own legal requirements would minimize their legal liability.

Thanks for the info, just before I went to check my game count!

lol I immediately thought about that... not only about the games that were already "removed", but the ones that will be in the future :P
Its going to be a pain to keep track of everything! I hope not tho :|

It should be pointed out, as per your example, that this applies [it doesn't; I was proved wrong many times now]
to all removed games (not sure about purchase-disabled ones yet), not just those under the Valve no longer has a business relationship with the developer category. Other reasons for removal o purchase-disabling may involve the expiration of a licence, for example.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not a removed-games specific problem. If you check those old Football Manager games that own on an account you can still see them from API.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games has gone missing from my list and that was pulled from the store because of licensing.

On additional note, purchase disabled games can be affected as well, as long as the developer has been cut business ties with Valve.
Examples:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/415490 (Lemurzin)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/467460 (ZombieRush)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/473490 (Rapid Squirrel)

Does not apply to all removed games. I have about 150 removed games and my count only went down by about 50

It would be appreciated if you could mention where Valve confirms this. If you saw it from Steamworks then don't mention anything other than being in Steamworks, and do not post screenshots of information in the group.

Nothing disappeared from your library, your owned games count was just reduced.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's right - 21 games removed from my profile count, none from library. Only time games disappear from your library are when you uninstall free games, but oddly only sometimes....

i wonder what you could even do when cg has not stepped in yet. what kind of decision and action could you make other than to tell people to wait ? as for the whitelisting of these games i guess it will turn into something similar to how bundled games are treated right now except they wouldn't have any value cause we just can't ask support to validate each submissions through screenshots. old ended gas prior to the change older than 7 days would just be in good standing i guess. it would be the most logical and the most probable outcome if this change is intended and there to stay (if i understand the change right). meh, you stuff i guess

Once we have a full list of the games affected, it shouldn't be an issue. There are already a lot of games that can't be checked in the first place, it's as simple as adding these to that list.
Comment has been collapsed.
On page 3, Spazfrag put up a list of affected games, although it could be incomplete and there can be more games in the future.
PS - on mobile, can't edit OP now as it would be PITA

It sucks... I had 2710 games this morning, now only 2662.

Just a moment ago, games that are "banned" or whatever because Valve cuts tie with developers are no longer detected by Steam API. A prime example is that (almost) all Digital Homicide games are no longer detected as owned.
This is not a per-app change, but rather a system-wide change, so if you own some games made by other developers that are "banned" then Steam API will also no longer detect them. Not sure if this is intentional and why Valve would do this, but surely this will change a lot of things.
What this could mean in SG:
I don't have a complete list of what games are affected, since there are too many. This means if SGTools wants to update their whitelist it can be a non-trivial process.
Also, your profile's game count may have changed, depending on how many such games you have in your account.
For example, I own Barbie and Her Sisters Puppy Rescue (appid: 396390, you won't be able to see that I own this game unless I am on your friends list on Steam and you go to the Friends that Play page of this game), and if you check with Steam API you won't be able to find 396390 as my owned appid.
