Just a moment ago, games that are "banned" or whatever because Valve cuts tie with developers are no longer detected by Steam API. A prime example is that (almost) all Digital Homicide games are no longer detected as owned.

This is not a per-app change, but rather a system-wide change, so if you own some games made by other developers that are "banned" then Steam API will also no longer detect them. Not sure if this is intentional and why Valve would do this, but surely this will change a lot of things.

What this could mean in SG:

  • for now, if you have won some game before and the game's developer has since been banned or otherwise cut business relationship with Valve, you will show as having not activated the game
  • SGTools check will fail before this mass-whitelist of games gets added, if you have won such games
  • it can be hard to check ownership of such games won from here, either from giveaway creator or from support (Support may receive tickets saying the winner didn't activate these games, but in fact they did, it's just not showing up in the API)
  • for the long term you may be able to enter giveaways for these games and win them multiple times (and get suspended for breaking the rules, of course)

I don't have a complete list of what games are affected, since there are too many. This means if SGTools wants to update their whitelist it can be a non-trivial process.

Also, your profile's game count may have changed, depending on how many such games you have in your account.

For example, I own Barbie and Her Sisters Puppy Rescue (appid: 396390, you won't be able to see that I own this game unless I am on your friends list on Steam and you go to the Friends that Play page of this game), and if you check with Steam API you won't be able to find 396390 as my owned appid.

It's not simply about "trash games". If a developer's business relationship has been cut for whatever reason, the games by them will not be detected.

I know it's not hence why I said I'm glad I do not enter for any trash games.I never once said this only effects trash games though as of now it pretty much does. This can easily be fixed by SG Tool adding exceptions to these games.

The only other thing it effect's are people who have dick measuring contest over game count.Sure maybe you will loose out on some GA's but really is your life going to suffer that much without the chance at a few free games?

This may also be an error or bug in the system or they may be doing this to remove all traces of said games from Steam.

Welcome to the digital age most wanted cheap and easy access to games with very little control now you got it and now people complain when things like this happen. At least with disc they can not take that away from you and will always be +1 to game count.

Definitely not a true statement. I've got Kek Story and Biology Battle as not activated, AFAIK:

  • Kek Story had just been released on Steam, it seemed like a nice platform (my fav genre) and i won it in a massive 2k giveaway. Sorry i can't predict that a game is trash before playing it or even watch others playing it.
  • Biology Battle was published by Meridian4 (an older version as it seems) , also distibuted by Microsoft for the Xbox version. I won it 1,5y ago so if Valve can't decide if something is trash after 7y of circulation, how can we?

'Trash' is a very subjective word, imho. One might say GTA5 is trash too, considering the latest news. 😎

Why should Valve decide what's trash? They aren't cutting ties with devs because their games are shit, but because they violated rules of the platform.
And ... Kek Story has bloody memes in it's name, and looks like the most simplistic platformers from the mid-2000s on kongregate. I wouldn't call it trash, but definitely belongs to the "why would I even want/own this" category.
Biology battle looks kinda nice though :)

Agreed! In fact it was a sarcasm, i meant even Valve doesn't tag games as 'trash' , why should we? To be honest, i don't think much when it comes to 2d platform and retro, although it's an area susceptive to... t.r.a.s.h 😛

More agreed, Kek Story is trash asset flip, Biology battle was a good one for coop, used to play it on a friend's xbox.

You're right trash is subjective so why are you so defensive about me be saying I'm glad I do not enter for trash games? Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

I did not know when I said I'm glad I do not enter for trash that it applies to everyone. That was strictly my opinion.I never said that is what happens when you buy "trash"

I also clearly said it mostly effect trash so for trashing being so subjective you sure take offense to it.If you sit here and want to try and convince me that Digital Homicide games are not trash and all the review's are lie's go ahead. So while trash can be subjective it's not always the case.

Are you offended for getting a reply on your opinion, but why? Opinions written publicly, are meant to be discussed. If you want your private opinions stay uncommented, you should post them on your blog.

You may call it an easy task and it might be easy for you, however, many of us don't spend too much time reading all behind-the-scenes gossip about groups, devs, publishers, prior to entering a game giveaway or buying a cheap bundle injected with 'trash' games. That's why i've posted two examples of how a fact can be deceiving, one game that was just released and another that was a known hit. As for Digital Homicide games, i agree they are trash, but they were tagged as 'trash' long after many of us already bought a very cheap bundle full of their games. Note that i'm not trying to convince you of the opposite, just stating the facts.

Anyway, my stance is that 'trash' is quite subjective according to one's taste and involvement in gaming industry, also because 'trash' is a tag we can easily put on games after they've been removed, but tough to put it beforehand, unless we are clairvoyants. 😛

I mean, I could write a list of a hundred stupid -but not 'trash'- games that are quite popular for numerous reasons (memes, political circumstances) like showering with one's parent or questioning what's under one's blanket etc 😛

That's the spirit. Not solidarity, or being annoyed at valve, but thinking it doesn't matter because it doesn't effect you.

Proper bellend you, aren't you?

Comment has been collapsed.

There's nothing to be annoyed about. If Valve no longer has business ties with these game companies, then they should visibly break away from them. It's unfortunate that this negatively affects people on SG, but it's not the end of the world. So long as you can still play those games, you should have no problem with this change. Outside of it causing some extra work for the SG team .

You should really stop the penis talk. I didn't even whine about either the count or 'losing' achievements, but being blocked from opening the page, not seeing the details anymore. Api removals break much stuff outside sg too, not everything revolves solely around sg either.
That just decreases the quality of the platform and yes

could remove ALL the achievements and we could do sweet fuck all about it.

they can remove every other reason to prefer Steam at all as well and I will subsequently turn to other options. Already spent 0 this sale, so yeah won't increase the way it looks either.

they cannot take our games.

btw, they did (at least) once actually, quickly noticed it isn't appreciated.

when people are upset about game counts and achievement counts.

And here I am pointing out not those but exactly all the other issues it has caused.

other ways to see those achievements though

How? Not all games have an internal display.

sad when the achievement is prized more than the game

Game and achievements go hand in hand for me as a way to view progress as well as setting goals.
I see them positively.

On a sidenote - does it decreases the quality of the platform, if they refuse to deal at any level with games that are not on the platform? Besides the obvious problems the API changes caused (we would barely notice if without SGTools and not activated checks) on Steam itself the change has 0 bad consequences

Achievement page inaccessible is none?
Breaking all external sites like BLAEO diminishes an important aspect of what makes/made the whole Steam package good in the first place.
Considering not just crap games are affected but also the license nonsense taking away good titles.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Achivement page doesn't make or break a game, so yes, it's not an issue. The achivements are there, the game and achivements are working, the games are unchanged :)
Breaking external sites change nothing on Steam. While this is obviously not a good change but a negligible amount of people is affected on blaeo, or even on SG compared to Steam's userbase. It's not Valve's job to keep external, third party sites working in any fashion.
And achivements are nonimportant on Steam ( / for Valve) as well, or they would care about them being broken

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There yes (for now) but not possible to view/check. Less comfortable -> decreas in quality, That's what you asked.
Frankly I would prefer Microsoft's approach of actually caring. Achivements are mandatory in games and cheaters get banned.

not Valve's job to keep external, third party sites working in any fashion.

That's the whole point of having a public api..
And an important part of the overall success. There are a ton of sites using it and providing features valve is too lazy and lame to do. People would care a lot less without it, like you know, about origin, uplay, galaxy etc

So your saying I should care about something that does not bother me or effect me?

Well then maybe you should care about everyone on this forum and defend everyone even if it has nothing to do with you or effects you.

You assume way too much from one post and reply because if you really knew me like you think you do you would know I hate Steam and Valve.I also do not hate something just for the sake of hate.I also clearly said in my first post that it sucks for those who it effects.I thought that would be enough acknowledgement that I do understand it effect's others I was not aware I had to also include some random rant with it.

Also nice penis reference you're a clever one.

The very first game I won on SG if now marked as Not Activated on my SGTools profile... oh dear...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I just checked myself with SGTools and it seems two of my wins are detected as not activated even though they were (KEK Story and Biology Battle) so I can confirm this "change" does affect the winners of such removed games.

EDIT: Also 30 games from my library just vanished from being counted by Steam. A few hours ago I had 2411 and now I'm being told I have 2381. I have no idea which ones they are and honestly this pisses me off. Hopefully this is just a temporary glitch that's going to be fixed. I don't like stuff vanishing in thin air without even a notification explaining the reason, if any.

lol wtf. I still have digital homicide games in my profile and they count...
CHECK AGAIN, the games you guys losed are only games BOUGHT from the recent summer sale.
I did buy a total of 6 games, before buying them i had 244 (another account, not this) and then 251.
Now after Steam downtime of before, it went down to 244 again. The games do still show up if i search them on my library or profile.
Its probably just a glitch and it will be fixed
Like wtf, so Gearbox Borderlands developer are cutting business with Valve really? (its one of the games that i bought)... if yes then why its still purchasable?
IMO its just a glitch, don't spread up lies

Search there for the DigiHom trash you know you have in your library.

They won't show up. At least, none that are listed on wikipedia as "Games developed" show on your public profile. I know, because I just checked them all.
