speedtest.net is horrible if your isp uses "speedboost" like comcast. They double your speed when you access something for the first 5 or 10 seconds so that everything seems snappier or faster and videos buffer more, but for continuous downloads it reverts to your normal speed.

there was a specific website that would let you set the amount of data to transfer and there you could get a pretty accurate test, but I dont remember the name :/
