I can't really do much at this point except to vent.

Seems like I can't even redeem a key if I purchase it elsewhere or have it gifted (I was just about to buy it later tonight). VPN is something that I'm not familiar with much and I'm not sure if it's a good idea to risk my Steam account because of that. The best thing is that I took a 7 day vacation from work to play the game but that's out of the window now. Just another case of Sony being Sony as usual.

EDIT
I found a Humble Store link but I most likely won't be able to redeem the key so I'm not gonna risk buying it.

So they just pulled the same BS that they did with Helldivers and blocked all the countries without PSN?
One would think that they learned their lesson after what happened the other day, but I guess the guys at Sony are just too dense for that.

Well, to be fair this is not retroactive like for Hell Divers II where ten to hundred of thousands of people couldn't play the game anymore. GoT DC is not yet released. So, the only thing they are doing is reducing their respective customer base.

Still not the best marketing move they could do. But at least it is happening upfront.

Ok, fair enough. It still is a pretty dumb marketing strategy to say "hey guys, we don't sell to half of the world... for reasons".
I'm personally not affected by this (PSN is available here + not interested in this game) but I still find it kinda insulting.

They could just make account linking obligatory only for some countries. Or just give an extra mission or even a skin and most people would link it just for it

But no, Sony has to be Sony. They want all telemetry information.

Valve figured out twenty years ago: "Piracy is a service problem. The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates"

I am sorry xarabas.

No but what's even more ridiculous with this case is that PSN isn't even required for solo, it's just for the minor multiplayer part, which I am sure a large part of people didn't even know existed (I didn't).
So yeah, you can't create an account that you probably won't even be using? Well you can't buy the game. You are ready to pay full price? That's nice, but we don't want your money.
Very smart, Sony. Very smart.

And, yeah, piracy is not just about the money, it's largely because of the service.

This, I used to download all my games, then I found out about steam, the sales and bundle sites.
My downloads went to almost zero, I do it now and then to test out a game. But If I like it, I either buy it outright or place it on Wishlist to wait for a price I am willing to pay for it.

I wouldn't download at all if they brought demo's back.

I had too often that I saw youtubers play a game, following for quite a while because it was fun.
Then bought the game for myself and I hated it :/

There are multiple cases of games I was mildly interested in and ended up getting after playing the demo, or was quite interested in but ended up not getting after playing the demo.
And I don't want to use the 2 hour refund window as a demo... (esp considering it's explicitly against the terms)

I don't want to suggest something that is against sg rules.. especially to moderator... But...
Lets say that if Sony doesn't want my money - I wouldn't give them my money. And playing the game would be unrelated to that :3

Also - using VPN is against sony rules. Don't do that. You might end buying their stuff and then be banned.

From now on, they'll actively force PSN everywhere:

For the online multiplayer. The singleplayer doesn't need PSN. But instead of just blocking that mode for restricted regions (which is already dumb but at least logical), they just prefer not selling the game at all.

Sony sucks. Something was cooking when Sony didn't return Helldivers 2 to PSN-unable countries, now we know it. I removed all PS games from my wishlist, the least I can do. PSN is available here but not gonna bother.

Edit: I assume no more GOG releases either after this news.

Neat. Ghost of Tsushima was the only PS4 game besides Bloodborne I had some interest in and I was wary of getting it on Steam after the earlier controversy, so good to know I won't be giving them money at all.

Well, at least GOG won't let them make PSN account is necessary, they can make it optional at best. Though I don't think they would release on GOG after doing this with Steam releases.

I don't think using a VPN on steam is a good idea, I've heard multiple times people complaining online that their accounts got locked/suspended/banned for using those types of things to bypass region restrictions.
Other than that, it just sucks that Sony has no clue about what people want, I guess the Helldivers 2 bullying wasn't enough

Leave it to Sony/Playstation to cause this kind of drama just a few years into their time with PC gaming. I used to adore Playstation, and over the last 5 years I've come to despise it.

I'm sorry to those of you affected by this bullshit.

Seems like they "learned" from Helldivers 2 by only introducing forced PSN linking + regional delisting for new games.

So uh... I know this is bad and all that, but is there anyway that they can stop you from playing a game if you use a bait account with the game in it from another region...? Can they actually stop you from installing a region restricted product this way if you use a bait account?

I mean, i would not play the game on your main account this way since it can potentially lead to problems, but i wonder if this actually works.

I know it is not the perfect solution, in your case, i would literally go back to pirating even tho the last game i pirated was skyrim at launch (which i did end up buying, multiple times).

VPN is out of the question, wouldn't work anyway. Your accounts Store Region is set to the country of the last used payment method. It's a hassle changing it.
Usually I would've suggested just buying a key from a 3rd party site, as Key Subs and Store Subs often aren't the same and the former not always having the same restrictions as Store Subs. But in Sony's case it looks like Store Sub = Key Sub most of the time, so it would be a gamble and a bad looking one.

Last chance would be a Steam Gift. I know it says "No cross region trading and gifting" but this tag is rather unreliable. If you happen to have a friend living in a territory where the game is available, why not give it a try. If the gift can indeed not be delivered due to the restrictions Steam should say so and abort before payment.

So I preordered the game on Steam and now it isn't available for sale.
I hope they honor my purchase because this is bullshit...

I can just make a US PSN account and use that anyway.
There are tons of gamers in those restricted countries that have Playstations and using accounts set up in other regions to play.

Edit:

You are receiving a refund for a game you pre-purchased - Ghost of Tsushima. The publisher of this game is now requiring a secondary account to play portions of this game – and this account cannot be created from your country.

180 countries blocked. That is three more than the previous 177 for Helldivers. And as far as I know they still have not reverted the country blocks on Helldivers even though PSN is no longer required. Originally PSN was only required for multiplayer in Ghost of Tsushima, not single player. Now they have decided to say fuck you, you can't play at all. So we should all tell them to fuck off as well.

Hard to imagine enough 'extra' PSN signups to make up for the loss in sales. Got some incompetent number crunchers over at Sony. Maybe the end game is requiring PS+ subscription on PC to play their games, which would be yet another poorly calculated move.

oh and screw Sony for blocking two thirds of the world's countries. They must really enjoy losing paying customers worldwide. FTR, there are better games out there than HD2 and GoTs.
