First Star Wars Movie You Saw?
I think it was the OG Star Wars IV but I'm not sure, I probably saw it on TV with my parents and I don't remember if I watched them on DVD or VHS or anything afterwards...but most likely just when they all played on TV as we never had any VHS or DVD players, so I could only watch them when I was visiting my grand parents. Also no idea when I saw Phantom Menace but did watch Attack of the Clones in theaters with friends from school when I was like 10 or so.
You did rank the films somewhat similar to how I would though I would maybe have V > Rogue One > III > IV > VI > VIII > I > II > Solo > VII > > > IX. I can understand if some like The Force Awakens but it added basically nothing of value but I will never understand how anyone could enjoy Rise of the Skywalker, as someone who studied at a film school, this film is objectively garbage...unlike The Force Awakens it "added" to Star Wars but those were all negative additions, so it basically only took away from it by bringing the Emperor back as well as many other stupid decisions made by JJ Abrams. I will never understand how they decided to rush this whole thing without at least a proper outline of the story and JJ Abrams should have had no part in writing the screenplay.

Rise of Skywalker is dead last in your list, everything is well with the world. That movie was a complete train wreck. Good to hear you've finally caught up with all the movies, I've been meaning to do something similar with the Star Trek movies for a while but instead I ended up watching the entirety of Lower Decks :P
And to answer the question in the poll, pretty sure the first one I watched was Return of the Jedi on TV as a kid, but it might have been Empire Strikes Back. I definitely watched episodes V and VI before IV because I remember that when I actually watched A New Hope I was finally able to piece together the story, and then the prequel movies started to release. I still haven't watched Solo, keep forgetting to do so even tho I have Disney +, but I've heard it's nowhere near as good as Rogue One so I don't feel particularly motivated.
BTW, thanks for the train!

If you still want more Star Wars, you could watch the shows.
You could even watch the animated shows (Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi), although I have to admit that especially the first one can be a bit of a struggle to get through sometimes. Clone Wars and Rebels do provide some backstory for Ahsoka.

Here is my final (and most likely controversial) list of favorite to least favorite Star Wars films based on my first watch!
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker
Coincidentally this is the ideal viewing order.

Missed seeing the films in cinemas by a few years but in the mid 80s as a young kid I couldn't get enough of the movies when they came out on VHS the first time. There was one point when they were being rented almost every month, and weekly during school holidays. Those movies (and caravan of courage 😀, fight me internet) along with Star Trek were such an influencing feature of my childhood.
Not surprised you weren't too impressed with Rise, it's kinda a basket case of a film, a fitting end perhaps for a sequel trilogy which I feel often struggled to justify its purpose other than to sell toys and spin off other projects. It's production highlights though how much the franchise has become a prisoner of it's fanbase (and Disney's often mercenary practices), I feel for the worse. Any story elements judged too transformative or contrary to what the fanbase might want to see were quickly jettisoned and replaced with (perhaps well meaning) fanservice and spectacle.
If the movie franchise is to continue, now that the Skywalker saga is over(?), I feel that a new direction is needed with the way the films are constructed. If the sequel trilogy has shown one thing it's "film by committee" hasn't really worked. For all the hate directed towards Last Jedi at least it tried something different. Disney needs to find creatives that can truly branch out the mythology and narrative and, more importantly, it needs to actually let them experiment. It paid off with Rouge One lets kill everyone off at the end! even with its behind the scenes problems. It's worked with the Mandalorian and Andor. I hope it can work out in the future now that the family/dynasty saga is pushed to the background because there is a wealth of story opportunities to exploit. But I'm not optimistic yet; a Rey movie? Really?
I shouldn't be too worried though, it seems to be the best way of getting a Star Wars movie canned these days is to announce its being made in the first place......
Just a final thanks for all your insights and thoughts on these movies, which even if people don't like them have such cultural impact that it's often difficult to find someone who's genuinely new to them. And to think the debate on these threads has been so polite and respectful, I've almost forgotten I'm on the internet sometimes! And thanks also for the wonderful generosity of your giveaways!
PS on the the other thread someone suggested the SW Holiday special. It's certainly........an experience 😳. Be warned, there are such sights in that special that once seen, cannot be unseen 😱. You may even wonder how Star Wars ever continued after such an abomination a special. A testament to the quality inherent in the series I feel, which I hope can be captured again in years to come.

You make very good points! I definitely think Rise was a victim of fanservice and them playing it way to safe. I also agree in my review that The Last Jedi took some risks that made me appreciate it, even if I didn't love it. I hope they can take risks in the future and make compelling storylines, even if fans are initially against it. Good writing should prevail in the end.

yes! I expected a lot of backlash coming from a fanbase that is very passionate about these films. Everyone has been incredibly kind and has provided some great insights to the films. It's helped me appreciate them even more.

I've been warned and encouraged to check this out. I'm definitely going to do it. Wish me luck 😂

Time to play Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, non-canon because the protagonist, Starkiller, is slightly OP

Wow, I never expected to see anyone rank Return of the Jedi above A New Hope! (I'd rank it below A New Hope and below Revenge of the Sith, personally, but otherwise, my ranking would be similar to yours... though I think I'd also drop Phantom Menace down a few slots, below Clone Wars).
Anyhow, bump for the great train and thread. :)

Wow, I never expected to see anyone rank Return of the Jedi above A New Hope! (
After reading the comments, I think this was my only controversial take 😂
I think its because A New Hope took a while to get going and I didn't know if I'd like the movies or not when I watched it. By the time I got to Return of the Jedi, I was having a blast. Clone Wars was just to boring for me. I at least liked the pod race in Phantom Menace :P
I do wonder if my ranking would change on a rewatch!

I know what you mean! Every time I told people I've never seen Star Wars, they'd look at me like I was an alien! If you do watch it, just keep in mind that it will never quite live up to the hype because you didn't grow up with it. It's still a lot of fun and I encourage you to try it sometime! I do miss telling people that I've never seen them though, their reactions are always priceless lol

Nice list and surprisingly long train! I think my first Star Wars was Attack of the Clones, unfortunately. I remember watching it on repeat when I was a kid. Kid me didn't have the best taste but it did get me into Star Wars I guess.

Hey everyone! Long ago (in a galaxy far away), I started a discussion where I decided to watch all of the Star Wars films for the first time. It took a while but I finally finished! I updated that thread, but still started this new one so that the giveaways don't get buried in all the text. It was a crazy amount of fun and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you guys tagging along and making it an enjoyable experience.
You can find those reviews HERE. Including Rise of the Skywalker, which I just finished watching.
As a thank you for putting up with that post in your discussion for so long, here is a train of 63 giveways. They are all level 3.
