Favorite Genre?
Oh another thread with recommendation about films, I like such topics :) I tried to avoid repetition and advise something new, sorry if it's not.
If you don't mind Asian cinematograph, I'l like to recommend "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" - maybe not world-class masterpieces, but this director have the ability to play color shades like no other, turning every scene into a work of art. Also "Oldboy" - this is masterpiece, in any case, for me, one of my favorites films, a stunning combination of drama, action, black humor with a beautiful soundtrack, though a quite specific film. Just don't even think of watching an American remake, with all due respect, it's awful.
From American movies, I think western is the greatest achievement of American cinematograph. Like R.Duvall said: "The English do Shakespeare, the French do Molière, the Russians do Chekhov - we do westerns". Although most movies of this genre aren't exactly suitable for a woman, in my opinion, I recommend "Dances with Wolves" - more hisrorical drama, from the western there is only the atmosphere of the wild west, it's a great story. Also (not the western) "Legends of the Fall" and "The Last Samurai" - I'm not say that this is a masterpieces, but for some reason I liked this films.
Hope you'll find a nice movies in this thread for yourself and your boyfriend.
Forgot to add something from old classic movies, one of my favorite - "The Sting", in my opinion, the best film from the heist films, very positive in comparison with other representatives of this genre, a great screenplay and soundtrack, and the duet of Newman and Redford is amazing. Although most likely you have already seen it, because it's a real classic.

I don't really watch movies, but I really liked John Wick.
It's worth seeing just for the combat/gunplay choreography (which the movie consist of for 90%). Plus it has Le Castle Vania music.

Dark City!
I never see anybody talking about his one but it was an excellent one for sure. The setting is very interesting, the story unveils in unexpected ways and the questions raised and explored by this film also are fascinating and deep. It's not old by my definition (which is, old is before 1975 or so and this particular movie is from 1998) and I can't recommend it enough.
Other ones I absolutely loved and recommend seeing but perhaps don't need that much of an introduction:
Hope it helps!

+1 for Zootopia - Wasn't interested in that movie at all and saw it last year after a lot of bugging, but damn was it nice. :D

+1 for The perks of being a wallflower
I've not heard many people say that it was an emotional film and some laughed at me for saying it was. So I really wasn't sure if it was because I was in a dark place at the time, have been wanting to rewatch it. But man I cried during half of the movie haha, it hit me so hard for some reason. Really relatable! (Unfortunately hated the book though.) And who doesn't love Emma Watson. :D
Wall-E is the only film I've ever fallen asleep during in the movie theatres. I seemed to be the only person on the planet who realllly disliked it, I'd thought for sure I was going to LOVE it. I wonder if I'd enjoy it more as an adult now.

Well I was perfectly fine when I saw TPOBAW and felt like crying a lot of times so very emotional indeed :D
I didn't get the chance to read the book though, not sure if I'll do it now you told me you hated it xD
You are probably the only person I've ever met who didn't like Wall-E!

Thanks! I've seen most of them, but they are fantastic movies. My boyfriend has somehow never seen Monty Pythin and the Holy Grail, so i'll add it to the list for him. The only ones I haven't seen are Watchmen and The Perks of being a Wallflower. I added them :)

The Silence of the Lambs
Studio Ghibli films (Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Arrietty, Totoro, Princess Mononoke...pretty much they're all great)
I wouldn't call these "the best movies ever" ones I love that are underrated imo:
Death at a Funeral (2007) - British (kinda dark?) comedy
Wild Target - British action comedy
Aftershock (has subtitles - original title is Tang shan da di zhen) - Sad earthquake disaster film
Lovely, Still - Romance
And I've not watched a tonne of really old movies either, but ones I loved are Psycho (which he's probably already seen) and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was funnier than I was expecting! A comedy musical.

If you liked Silence of the Lambs and like other psychological thrillers, then Antichrist would be right up your alley. FANTASTIC movie.

Lots of good stuff here, I'll try to pick some that haven't been mentioned.
No love for Wes Anderson? The Royal Tenenbaums is my fav, probably followed by The Grand Budapest Hotel
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - A sci-fi love story that makes you think
Minority Report - Great cyberpunk film based on the Philip K. Dick book
City of God - A violent but beautiful tale
Seven Samurai - The best samurai film you'll ever watch.
The Shawshank Redemption - One of the few (imo) Stephen King books that was given a good film.
Black Swan - Since Requiem for a Dream was already mentioned, another masterpiece from one of my favorite directors
Casablanca - On many toplists? Sure. Overrated? Never.
The Hunt - Moving Danish film starring Mads Mikkelson. Also see After The Wedding
Alien - Quintessential sci-fi horror film. The Thing is great also.
Super Troopers - Probably my favorite comedy. Cheesy but awesome. Speaking of other cheesy cult classics, Big Trouble in Little China and Evil Dead 2 are both a must.

In This Corner of the World, WW2 from the point of view of a Japanese woman. It's not a must-watch per se, but it's kinda interesting to see the war from an angle that's less explored.

Sci-Fi 44% favorite genre and still no Ex Machina recommendation? Something is fishy here. :)
It took me a while to check all 4 pages so I don't repeat already recommended movies. Thought the list will be shorter, but I'm glad my contribution can be a little bigger.

Jodaeiye Nader az Simin (A Separation) 2011
Darbareye Elly (About Elly) 2009

Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead -> A must-see for the WTF factor.
Dredd, Sunshine, 28 days later - Turns out that Alex Garland is pretty good at writing different kinds of sci-fi movies.
A History of Violence - What happens if a man mostly known for disturbing body-horror stuff makes a slow-paced crime drama ? You get a really good drama that messes with your head due to emotional impact.
Scanners. Speaking of David Cronenberg, one of his more famous movies, and one I also find myself re-watching every once in a while. Exploding heads are fun and all.

Just watched a youtube video about this so: Baby Driver
Setting aside reservations about Kevin Spacey the film is absolutely fantastic, so for the sake of the other people involved give it a shot!
EDIT: Some of the the director's (Edgar Wright) other movies are pretty great as well - Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz etc

Three that a friend and I watched, which were actually about as good as people say they are...
Schindler's List. (Possibly a little slow, it's been a little while since I actually watched this one.)
The Shawshank Redemption.
Fight Club.
A couple that are incredibly over-rated, and I'd actually recommend skipping...
Blade Runner.
2001: A Space Odyssey.

So my boyfriend and I have been looking at "must see movie" lists and randomly picking off them in order to discover some great movies we've never seen. Problem is that most of those lists contain mostly older films, and he is not used to old films like I am. We are trying to make a list of old and newer films that are considered great.
I know the question is a bit subjective, but we trust normal people (you guys) over critics. :P
TL:DR We would love to hear what your favorite movies are. Or movies you think everyone should see. Hopefully we'll get a good mix of older and modern films. :)
