Favorite Genre?
I do not watch much movies, but I see that The Sunset Limited has not been mentioned yet, and that's one of my favourites.

Here's some more to add to the list :P
Goodfellas (1990) - A classic, I'm honestly surprised nobody mentioned it here yet
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
Falling Down (1993) - It's that movie where "I don't want lunch, I want breakfast" scene is from. Good movie, good memes
Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) - I was surprised how good this movie was. Spy-action-comeday where Samuel L. Jackson play's the autistic villain.
The Road (2009)
Event Horizon (1997) - One of my personal favorites, but it's kinda stupid and cheesy at times.

I would recommend the trio written by Taylor Sheridan, they each tackle a different genre, but the common ground is that they are all very well made movies with top notch cinematography, story and acting.

my suggestions are known to most of the people, but here they are:

Quick glance at my imdb listings :
A Most Wanted Man
Maleficent - for a little diversity in my suggestions. Enjoyed it nonetheless
Arrival - I was on edge the whole time watching it. Suspensful and full of mistery. (dont watch the trailer of this one. just see the movie as is. It will be more rewarding experiance.
Prometheus
Gone Girl - stepping away from sci fi, this is kind of thrilling movie, too.
Nocturnal Animals - yeah, another Amy Adams movie, but what can I do.. This ones.. different.. but interesting.
Interstellar - and for the sake of it - this one, because I loves it.
Hope at least something from my sugggestions was something new to you ;)
edit : this somehowslipped my mind, but one of the last few I saw that I really enjoyed -Wind River

I really enjoy older movies but I think for him, it would be anything from the 70s and older. I'm still hoping for suggestions of older movies though because I'm slowly trying to get him used to older flicks.
That's okay. There has been a lot more recommendations then I thought there would be! Over 200 so far. It looks like a great variety of movies.

Great suggestions, especially Schindler's List and Green Mile. Also Space Jam, Gremlins, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit are my childhood movies. I haven't seen Letters to Iwo Jima, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Moneyball or Ojka. They all look interesting and different from eachother. Thanks!

Since nobody posted it yet:
Sunshine (2007) - could have been more focused on the philosophy than on action, but its photography and soundtrack are brilliant.
The Thin Red Line (1998) - doesn't have such an impressing intro like Saving Private Ryan, but it triggers way more thoughts.

You're welcome :-) I love watching films, I tend to watch several a week with my wife, sometimes re-watching older ones, or sometimes going out to watch new ones. I could recommend a lot more, but hopefully for now you can find one or two you haven't see from that list.
The majority of those are English language, though I do also like foreign films from time to time. Here's some other favourite foreign-language films that I gave to a friend a while back:
Japanese
Perfect Blue (1997)
Battle Royale (2000)
Confessions (2010)
Akira (1988)
Yojimbo (1961)
Princess Mononoke (1997) (and most Ghibli films, but this happens to be my favourite one)
French
Tell No One (2006)
Intouchables (2011)
Amelie (2001)
La Haine (1995)
Delicatessen (1991)
The City of Lost Children (1995)
Diabolique (1996) (I haven't watched the 1955 original)
Korean
Oldboy (2003)
A Bittersweet Life (2005)
I Saw The Devil (2010)
German
Downfall (2004)
The Lives of Others (2006)
Run Lola Run (1998)
Goodbye Lenin! (2003)
Chinese
Chunking Express (1994)

House of Flying Daggers (2004)
Spanish
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

REC (2007)
Portuguese
City of God (2002)
(sorry Brazil & Portugal, I'm sure you have other great films but this is the only one I've watched)
Italian

Life is Beautiful (1997)
Swedish
Let The Right One In (2008)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

I see you already saw The Road, if you haven't, try the book too, it's even better.
I'll +1 The Thin Red Line, Sunshine.
I'll add (unless I missed them being listed already) Once Upon a Time in the West, the earlier works of Terrence Malick and The Fountain, and Moon.

So my boyfriend and I have been looking at "must see movie" lists and randomly picking off them in order to discover some great movies we've never seen. Problem is that most of those lists contain mostly older films, and he is not used to old films like I am. We are trying to make a list of old and newer films that are considered great.
I know the question is a bit subjective, but we trust normal people (you guys) over critics. :P
TL:DR We would love to hear what your favorite movies are. Or movies you think everyone should see. Hopefully we'll get a good mix of older and modern films. :)
