I have a decent laptop, and want to start recording, what do you recommend?

Sorry... I did search but I looked up "recorder" not "screenshot/screencast or capture"

definitely check out Open Broadcaster Software - its free and open source - very useful for live streaming (like twitch..etc) and live local recording for youtube publishing. there are good tutorials in the OBS forum for doing whatever you would like with it. I get better results with it than I did with FRAPS. Hit me up if you need any help getting things setup and working.

I've seen and heard great things about them, however they are way out of my price range :/

Hey, how do you use the screen recorder for Sony Vegas? I had SV12 but I never figured out how to use that thing.

It does, well did. I don't know about 13, haven't had time to touch it. It was called like WinCap or something....

MSI Afterburner is an overclocking program and a game recorder. From my use, there is hardly any framerate drop when using it.

Lightworks is a free (non-commercial use only, a.k.a. no youtube monitization) non-linear editor. It's quite powerful but takes a little practice. I have a GTX so I just use ShadowPlay, which doesn't help you. I think the Razor Game Booster might have some game recording features, no promises though, it may just be screen cap.

Fraps is great, although it's resource demanding and costs $37 for the full version, which was worth it for me.

Dxtory is the best for recording in my experience and Sony Vegas for editing.

Agreed, although it takes a while to find the right settings.
