When is it okay to pirate game? (giveaway inside)

View Results
NEVER!!!
when a company stops selling that game
to demo the game
when you don't have money to buy the game
if it has denuvo but got cracked
YES!!

It is okay to drive a car and use electricity even though it ruins the environment and threatens real life as we know it.
It's legally not okay to pee against a tree even though nobody sees you. It is okay to pee your pants though, so lets all do that.
It's okay to have a home. It's not okay for a person to build a house where he wants even though the planet belongs to everybody.
It's okay for the government to literally waste tax dollars on stuff they know nothing about. It is not okay to not pay tax.
Everybody should have the right to eat. It is not okay for a homeless kid to steal bread from a rich supermarket because he would starve otherwise.

I guess it depends on what you actually mean with "okay". everything has a good and a bad side.

What about people like me who live in such "African country" without the ways to pay Online! and yet if they can pay online is too expensive.
a simple game of 10USD = 1800DA then imagine a game of 50 / 60USD :/
I'm sorry to say that, but I love Games mostly the Strategy Games and my only way is to download a cracked version without being able to play multi ofcaurse.
obviously I add these games that I loved on my "wish list" so i buy the games one day, when I can.
u will tell me that there is free games! YES there are hundreds but until today every free games I try is "PAY TO WIN"

To be clear, what can you buy in your country for 1800DA ? Just to give me perspective :)

CS GO for example I buy it at this price, by a reseller and it was promoted on Steam
I buy Rome II total war also from the same seller with all the DLC: 9000DA it is a fortune here LoL

"it is a fortune here", that's actually what I wanted to know. I realize how much is 10$, it's not that much for me, but 1800DA don't speak to me at all, so just saying 10USD = 1800DA mean nothing to me. What can you buy in real life for 1800DA ?

now I see what you mean! I apologize =)
emmm Let's say that I buy everything I need for 2 days Including my cigarette LoL

ex I earn 24000DA that means 150 Euro the month, working normaly 8 hours a day 6/7
buying a game for the half of your salary is not always acceptable, as I have already said I speak only of the period when the games in Steam promoted cause it is necessary to buy from resellers at double the real price
I hope you understand me now ;)

It's okay, technically you can buy CS/GO in your country, it was a valid answer XD
Ouc, now it's some perspective ! Half a month salary for a AAA game, uuuuh...

Maybe in the case that the game has been removed from sale or whatever, but in every other case? No, that's just you stealing from the people who spent hours of their time making that product. If you don't have the money okay, you still don't need the game and it's still stealing. I didn't have any way of expanding my game library for years, I survived.

To make sure my computer can definitely handle the game, so therefore using it as a demo (this is seriously missing, I hate the fact developers nowadays don't give you a chance to try out their game before buying it - there are some betas, but very few games do it).
I used to pirate games that I was extremely hyped about (Dark Souls II) when I did not have the financial means to purchase them, nowadays I just mostly avoid AAA games altogether.

It saddens me that "when you don't have money to buy the game" is the second most popular answer. The only time I'd say it's ok to pirate is when the game is no longer available for purchase or isn't available in your region.

I'd say it's acceptable if the game is highly unlikely to ever be commercially sold again. A lot of old console games and licensed games fall into that category.

It's the only practical way to play many arcade games.

It's never ok. You can try to justify it however you want, but it is still wrong. Unless the developers, publishers, and whoever else owned part of the game say "If you can find it out there, then take it!" then what you are doing is wrong. Doesn't mean I've never done it or that I won't do it again in the future. Just means it is wrong. Stop trying to justify yourself and embrace how shitty of a person you are.

Well, I would mark "NEVER!!!" but "when a company stops selling that game"... well, if the company doesn't even care about selling the game anymore, we shouldn't care about buying it also.
I'm a programmer and if I used to sell something I stoped selling... I wouldn't bother if someone pirated it... I think I would even put it free somewhere (like Blizzard did with Starcraft). But I may be wrong... CRACKING a game is also unsafe, so I would try to find a free DRM free version of the game!
Another answer would be: The game to Pirate is ONE PIECE! (yes, I thought you were giving away this pirate game! :P )

If there's no demo. Did you enjoy playing it? Buy it. Did it suck? Delete it. I've been burned too many times by screenshots and videos being nothing like the actual gameplay.

If it's not available in your region. There's no sale to lose there.

The only way I'll pirate a game that I could otherwise buy is if it has harmful DRM. Dear devs/publishers: If I like your game I would like nothing more than to buy it, but if your shitty DRM has a chance of causing damage to components of my PC or the disc itself you're not getting my money.

Otherwise if it's just a matter of "I don't like the devs/publisher" I simply don't play it period unless someone decides to gift me a copy. Of course, there are some devs/publishers who's games I won't even play if someone tries to give it to me (EA, Ubisoft, Paradox, etc.)

People who download "warez" dont belong to any target group of buyers even if the industry always likes to make us believe
People who doesnt have money or doesnt want to spend it....they wouldnt buy it anyway
most is only downloaded because its just there... not for any particular reason

I am a 90s kid... that means i download everything when i was young but there has never been a plan behind
It was downloaded because it was there ...that's all

the huge Starwars fan will always go to the cinema he will probably download it because he can not wait for it...but he will somehow pay for the movie ...whether by buying a bluray or DVD or he will go to the cinema later again ...there are only a few who do not <- and again no target group

Piracy actually only promotes sales and does not lower them
on TV shows you can see very well... the whole illegal streams and downloads actually only ensure that the series will be successful at all ...especially worldwide
Even the people who do not pay because they just do not want it and get for example a great movie-collection..promote the sales only in a different way....somewhere the stuff has to be stored ...so they need to buy hard disks, blank CDs and so on

So the answer to your question
-> always
There is nothing against it but much for it ^^

When game devs are OK with pirating it - like with Hotline Miami 2 in Australia some time ago.

Also If you live in country that treats age rating too seriously and because of your age nobody will sell you game you want to play. I mean - if you are breaking law already - why not take one step further :)

Never.
If you can't buy a certain game, just buy another.
If it's no longer available. If your copy broke. I you can't afford. Doesn't matter. It's never a valid reason for piracy.

If your copie is broken or is no longer for sale so you can not buy it anymore
You've already paid for it or you want to buy it
But you can not... because the manufacturer does not offer the possibility...so what is against it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

1- Already paid for:

The copy you purchased at first is paid for, not the one you are pirating.
If you broke it, too bad. Your loss.

2- No longer for sale:

It no longer for sale. You can't buy even if you want to. Move on.

In the end it's a matter of opinion. To me, it's just like stealing. I see no difference.
You either do the right thing or you don't. But that's me.
I don't pirate anything. Absolutely nothing. Because I rather not to. I don't agree with it.
I like to buy the games/books/movies/tv shows I want.
If I can't buy at the moment, I watch netflix, play free games, find some legal way to enjoy something.

you can not steal anything that does not exist
The manufacturer would not get any money anyway since he does not offer it any more
but i totally understand the point behind your statement

You say you do not piracy anything...thats hypocrisy ;o for example... you have never open youtube and listened to music ? ;-)

it's good that piracy exist So many things would have been lost forever
like television shows/movies/series which have only been aired once
we can be so glad that from many things... still TV or VHS rips exist also other things like music and games

I support everything i like. i havent downloaded anything for years, but I bought many things I had "downloaded" from other sources later
which I would never have taken into consideration without this possibility

you have never open youtube and listened to music ?

At least in Germany (and according to your profile you're from here) you're paying the "ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice" which not only refers to TV and radio, but also to a PCs with internet connection.
Furthermore YT/Google (Alphabet) is paying the copyright holders. The reason why so many YouTube videos were blocked in Germany for years, was the successless negotiating between Google and GEMA. And Google earns money by advertisements.
Therefore you can't say that YouTube would be free.
Now if you meant illegally uploaded music at YouTube, well, that usually doesn't exist for good.

Overzealous DRM. Steam's own DRM is fine, out of the way, low impact.. not true with all others.
No longer available, or not available in your region at all.
Insane pricing for your region. (If it's a $50 US game and they want $100 in Canada, well FU)
Sometimes to demo, though I normally see what I need from videos and such.

Thats about it that I can think of. I don't pirate many games, most of what I have is exclusively due to the first half of the second reason. I've found most games with the crappy forms of DRM are not games I want in the first place, likewise overpriced stuff.

  • I can't get the game where I am, either it's not being sold anymore or I can't get it in my country
  • If it's very expensive I wanna be sure it's worth it, no amount of reviews is gonna tell me if I'm going to enjoy it
  • The company has done a lot of shitty things and I can't buy the games knowing that, but I still want to play their games (screwing over their workers, using kickstarter money for other games on other projects etc, etc)

The area I 100% spend money is foreign games that have gotten localised (Japan mostly). They're only going to continue providing it out of their own country if they can see the profit being worth the effort of translation and distribution to an overseas market. So if I want more of that game I gotta pay for it (if i'm not sure i do pirate it and then buy if im interested, cause overseas refunding is a bitch and not worth it)

I usually pirate a game when it doesn't has a demo so I can try it out. See if I like the game, and whether it runs on my PC or not. If I like the game, I uninstall the pirated version and buy a legit copy when I have the money. If I don't like it, I uninstall it and move on.
