Makes sense. I think they were only available through Paypal previously. It never made sense to me that Valve didn't offer it themselves on their own store.

Doesn't seem like you can buy it with your own Steam Wallet money.

So if you want to gift Steam money to a friend, you are forced to use "real" money (or lose a lot from the Steam Market tax). Bit disappointing, but this is a nice step forward.

"Doesn't seem like you can buy it with your own Steam Wallet money."

Maybe also so if people are trying to trade money for games or something, they get more money?

Finally!

As far as I know, physical Steam cards still aren't available in my country (at least not on the big racks with all the iTunes, Spotify, PSN, etc gift cards); not even at the local Gamestop.

(Or do you know if they are somewhere, madjoki?)

If I buy a digital one for my kid, will that "unlock" (can't think of the right word right now, bit medicated today) her account?

Unrestricted ?
Probably like steam wallet gift always worked.

While I cannot guarantee, I believe that Steam's FAQ does say that purchases made with the funds from a Gift Card count toward removing the "limited" status (requiring a minimum purchase of 5$).

From what Omicron said, the others worked, so the ones bought directly from Steam should work too.

That's a good question! I used paypal aliases to unlock my kids' accounts but I don't like the idea of my paypal being permanently connected to them so gift cards are a welcome addition.

When you say "unlock" i assuming your meaning unlocking steam features like market, trading, etc, etc. Im right?

If that is, i unlocked the community market by spending $0,49 (us dolars) on a game using credits from my wallet carged with a Steam Gift Card of $5 (i buy it digitaly, i play to the reseller and they send me a code via emalil).

So if you send a gift card or buy one from digital reseller (i buy several to Keysplanet in G2A with not an issue at all) your son need to spend some of those credits before the market and trade will unlock for him.

In short, yes you can unlock steam accounts wasting cedits charged with a Gift Card, that was how i unlocked the market for mine.

P/D: I dont have any payment method registerd yet on my steam account (not credit cards or paypal)

Just tested it out myself, it does not lift the limitations of a limited account.

After a quick search I found an actual response from a Steam community moderator here.

Anyone knows what the exchange rates are? I assume that if I send the 150 rubles card (the cheapest one, with blue corner) to someone in the US, it's not gonna magically turn into $5.

Can I redeem a Steam Wallet code that is in a different currency?
Yes, however you will be prompted to convert the value of the Steam Wallet code to the currency of your Steam Wallet as shown below. The daily currency conversion rate will be applied.

To me it's this:

  • blue = 5€
  • red = 10€
  • green = 25€
  • yellow = 50€ and
  • purple = 100€

Not sure if they would convert 5€ into $5 (card for card) or into $6.5 (money value to money value) though.

Money to money, almost certainly, otherwise they wouldn't mention the daily exchange / conversion rate. Using those examples, buyer purchases 5€, the other person receives 6.5$.

So, I did a little experiment.
They didn't show me how much the person on the receiving end will get, but my 150 rub card safely arrived in US as $2.60 card. Which is today's rate, according to this.

.... dang. Then I have still no easy way to get my kid's account unrestricted (don't want to use the same payment method as on mine, and physical Steam cards are still not available here).

So... In theory - can I make a giveaway and then just gift a card with the same cost as the game in question (conversion and region prices taken into account) with the condition that winner will actually buy this game right away? It'll be a lot easier than searching through traders. Is there any flaw that I'm missing? Besides possible lack of cooperation from winner.

The major flaw I see - gift cards are for fixed values only, you can't send custom amount (=game price).

You can't overpay more than 4$ by using multiple cards gifts. And I'd rather give that little extra to a winner and brighten his day even more than spend all that time searching for trader/retailer, checking his reliability and most likely still overpaying. But yeah, custom amount would be great to have. As well as ability to pay recipients region price. But it's still better than none ^_^

interesting thought
instead of buying a game expensive, you can gift someone money and they buy it cheap for themselves
not only here, but also great for friends

That's an interesting thought, I'm curious if you can gift cards to all regions, unlike gifting games. This could be a workaround to region restricted giveaways, but you would have to pay the full price for the game(unless it's on sale). Still, the winner could easily mark as not received and spend the money on something else since you didn't actually gift the game

MouseWithBeer quoted that it's region free, so I think it is indeed a potential workaround. Except for an unreliable winner part... Well, it could work for group GAs, whitelist and carefully made forum GAs, so it's at least something

Yeah, but that means extra steps for the winner with selling keys, plus possible tradelock and marketlock for people not using app. And it's always nice to have more options

Yes, you are right. These cards are only for those who have creditcards or paypal to buy them. Gaben make a little poop in our steam wallet.

Funny how these aren't region locked.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's no need since every region will have different ammounts / prices - which are going to be converted automatically to another currecny if you plan on sending them to another region.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I remembered my line of thought. If someone gives me a 10 dollars card, it gets converted to my currency, which is the BR$. Since one dollar is worth about BR$3,50 , I get a lot of BR$, and considering the prices are adjusted per region, I can buy more games with the gifted 10 dollars than the person with the actual 10 dollars.

Now, the question is: how can you add it to your wishlist :))

Permalink

I guess this might be good for some people but I can't see that many cases where this may be practical, to me it seems to be a quick and improvised patch to solve cross region gifting without actually fixing it.
