If the game suck (or seems to suck) i dont give my vote, even if the dev promise me a free copy or wathever, of course the trailers sometimes are tricky, how many AA (or is AAA) games have greats trailers and finally the game is a pice of sht,(ALIEN COLINIAL MARINE cof cof cof).

This subject is relative because crappy is a matter of perspective. To the devs, their games are never crappy, and they feel they have a right to have the chance to make money like everyone else.

I was sure this was a necro, but turned out it was just a clone. Ah, the endless topics we discuss...

On topic, don't worry, Greenlight is going away, and any dev will be able to put their game on Steam, so this practice will go away.

oh dont worry, knowing how things happen in Valve time, it will take a huge bunch of time before it goes away
..and I can guarantee you that as soon as they make it open to everybody to publish, ppl will petitioning to put the old GL system back in less than a few days

True about Valve time. As for a petition, I'm sure it will be as effective as petitioning for HL3, and will probably have fewer supporters.

Just like you said "steam store", it's a store. a store sells everything for a variety of different buyers. not everyone's tastes are the same. and steam store is not only for exceptional buyers just like yourselves. games you find annoying and stupid, some other guy will find them interesting.. the opposite applies as well. The fact is that every developer has his own way of promoting his game. Others give free keys to the voters and others just wait for people to just vote their game out of nowhere.
Greenlight will cease to exist sooner or later as Valve stated and everyone will be able to put his game on steam. what are you going to do now? Crying on SG, and all over the internet how Valve and Steam suck?????

Keep in mind that even if some people don't vote it just because they can get it for free, the game will end anyways on Steam, you can't stop thousands of voters.

Too much BAD games with such promotion. I don't mind to vote for a NICE game in Greenlight and receive the key for it. But not for obviously bad projects.

Old thread, but still relevant at least. I think it's not a bad idea in theory because in the end it's just marketing to get the gamme's name known and drive traffic to the greenlight page. Then once the game is greenlit, it builds a fanbase who will spread the word about the game if they enjoy it. It's not exactly a new marketing scheme, it's also often used by other types of businesses to lure in new customers because people are more willing to try something new if it's free.

The issue is fully at fault with the people who vote just to get a free game and not because the game actually looks like something they'd enjoy playing.
