I've been using avast! for a while now and while it's been working for me, I wonder if there is a better one out there.

I don't need an antivirus.
I wear personal protection whenever I insert my hard disk into a slot. -_-

made myself cringe a little there ...

How is ESET not an option? It's better than any of your brand options.

Since I went Win 10, I mostly just use MS Security Essentials. They finally made it good enough for people who browse smart and avoid most obvious dangers.

Cool fact: McAfee creator John McAfee was a conman before he created the antivirus brand and had killed a man.

MSE for AV

MBAM for AM

Both combos are good enough paired with other preventive measures like common sense and spyware blaster.

Avast as antivurus with the help of malware as scanner.
The best combination for me. And also the brain is a good one too:)

I've had practically used all the AV listed above. I must say ESET AV is the one I please the most because of clean UI, silently powerful, and doesn't as much interrupt your activity like other AV does.

The best AVs out there certainly Bitdefender and Kaspersky (I refer to AV Comparative which I believe the most reliable source of AV test out there). Currently, both are consistently rated high in those test conducted by AVC. Still I prefer ESET more. I hate firewall so I use the normal version which is Node32 AV instead of Smart Security as the latter is likely to mess something with OS/software I installed. Just use the build-in Windows firewall and you should be good.

Malwarebytes is a must on every single PC. Just use the free version and scan weekly or monthly.

Edit: ESET MULTI-DEVICE SECURITY FREE 6 MONTHS GIVEAWAY

Yeah, ESET has always been quite popular because it is essentially a freeware that disguises itself as a commercial product. When I used it (like, 14-16 years ago), gaming magazines regularly posted one-month universal codes for it, so if someone bought it in class, everyone had free AV that month. :) (Not that it was difficult to crack it…)

ESS 9 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

I started with avast free edition and Comodo firewall and Spybot Search and Destroy for manual scanning.

Then Comodo got major update and changed its engine and added antivirus, which I didn't like.
Choosing to install Comodo firewall only, it installs all the suite, but with the rest of the features disabled.
The firewall itself was much more heavier for my system. So, I uninstalled Comodo.

Then I replaced my firewall with Privatefirewall. It worked nice.

Then I decided that I don't need firewall for my needs.

I also replaced Spybot with MalwareBytes.

Then, through time, avast becomes heavier with every major version change.
I intend to replace it with Avira free edition, just to check it out (I've read that the latest version is lighter than the rest of the free anti-viruses).

Also, by reading the previous posts so far, I'm thinking to either try and buy ESET or not use an anti-virus at all, as so far no real alerts have ever bothered me.

Thank you for your interesting ideas and your opinions.
