What Antivirus are you using?
Yes, that's true, but that doesn't change the fact that there is a difference between the two programs. They aren't the same thing.

As Lucifera already said, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not a substitute for antivirus. You can ask Malwarebytes support and they'll tell you exactly that.

I did aswell, but I bought it long time ago, when it was a lifetime licence. But even though now it's a yearly (?) subscription, it's still very much worth it.

You can use your brain and that helps a lot, but web browser and many internet programs are always flawed by still undiscovered security holes. An antivirus can help you a bit here.

+1 so happy to see this as first/top answer.
I agree MBAM is a handy utility, perhaps the best malware scanner/remover, and one of the first things to run if you suspect something shady, but it isn't an AVS.
Edit: I see someone already pointed that out, oh well.

i am pretty happy with kaspersky internet security using it for years

ESET is probably the best antivirus out there
ESET products consistently return the lowest number of false positives, as demonstrated in successive AV-Comparatives’ False Alarm Tests.
ESET is the only one vendor who reached 100% score from AV-TEST in 2014 and 2015 self-protection test.
ESET has the longest unbroken run of VB100 awards for malware detection of any Internet security vendor.
ESET partner won Nikkei Computer Customer Satisfaction Survey 2015-2016 in Japan, offering best business security products on market
PCMag Consumer Recommended Award for security suites and stand-alone antivirus software
ESET was awarded as the best business anti-virus in Security Insider IT Awards 2015 in Germany.

Agreed, if I shall ever use a paid antivirus then it's most probably ESET. And ESET is quite popular.

Bingo. I used to like ESET, too. I used the security suite with the firewall, but I got tired of them jacking their prices and finally dumped them after like 3-5 years when their software started bogging down my system.
It's sometimes difficult to find JUST an antivirus these days what with all these companies wanting to sell you "security suites" with a bunch of crap most of us sincerely don't need.
I tried Kaspersky, and it was like trying to get a virus off my system when I simply wanted to uninstall it.
One anti-virus solution I haven't been disappointed by so far is BitDefender. I use the free version on some older computers, and I decided to spring for the paid version for my new laptop and desktop just because I got a great deal (3 installs for a year for $29.99).
I use that an MalwareBytes and am good as gold.
Still looking for a good way to add outbound verification/popups to the built in Windows 10 firewall, but every solution I've tried so far has lacked. If anyone has any suggestions, please post.

Strange. I either hear Kaspersky is the best thing out there or that it is impossible to get rid of. Yet I also hear BitDefender is lightweight because it actually does nothing but has a better marketing than McAffee to keep it on top of antivirus comparisons.

Does nothing... the people that claim that are ridiculous and jealous (probably competing companies or people upset they paid good money for an inferior product). Marketing doesn't give you high marks if you can't detect anything.

ESET is a good virus engine, but it's actually a terrible program. I've seen it cause tons of conflicts, it's a resource hog, it can sometimes lock people out of their computers, and I've often seen it refuse to uninstall. If I have a computer with a problem I'll gladly run their online scanner, but I stopped recommending the program.

Was using Opera (old version 11.00 or so... for the whole life, but it's not supported since like 3 years, they just jumped to their 19.0 or 20.0 it sucks anyway don't remember ... I'm using Chromodo only like half year). Never could get used to Firefox... I know chrome is nothing good, it eats RAM like crazy, but I like their profile customization, that I can connect it to my mail and load settings everywhere.

Another problem with Chrome is that a lot of its add-ons have adware or even malwave and they track everything you do. On Firefox I don't have to worry about that, as long as add-on is marked as verified I know it's safe.
I really love customizing my browser so Firefox is the perfect choice for me.
that I can connect it to my mail and load settings everywhere.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, but I think you can create account for Firefox and then use their sync feature to load your settings should you install Firefox on another PC. How much their sync feature does I can't tell as I never used it.

Windows Defender, which comes with Windows 8 and later Windows OS.

I've been using avast! for a while now and while it's been working for me, I wonder if there is a better one out there.
