Greetings! I recently finished Ernest Cline's Armada and it reminded me of how much I love reading. When I was much younger I would tear through multiple books in a week. Now I'm lucky if I finish a couple books a year.

I'm heading on a 5 month vacation in January, so I thought it may be a good time to pick up some decent reads and load up my Kobo Aura. I'm looking for recommendations of your must read/favorite novels/short stories/manga/graphic novels, etc.

A quick round up of some of my favorite books that I've read (in no particular order):

Ender's Game
A Song of Ice and Fire
Tigana
Oryx and Crake
Preacher
LOTR
Maus
Day of the Triffids
Alas Babylon
The Sandman
The Watchmen
Dune

Thank you kindly for your help and here's a little train (closed for now!)for your troubles.
I'll add some flash giveaways randomly over the next few days as I'm able to:

Thanks for the quick responses. I already have some great suggestions! Flash Gib #1 <-over (I'll add some more tomorrow!)
Flash Gib #2 - LV3 <-over!

Flash Gib #3 -LV3 <-over!

Flash Gib #4 - LV4 <- A shadowy gib! (Closed)

*Edit 2 -> Thank you everyone for the amazing suggestions! It's going to take me some time to follow up and make a master list, but I definitely will. I really appreciate the time everyone took so far. I'll add some more gibs as soon as I'm able, as a token of my appreciation.

I'll echo the previous recommendations for the seriously spectacular Kingkiller & Mistborn series. Really, wonderful writing. I'll also repeat a recommendation for the Gentleman Bastards series, which although I don't rate it quite so highly as those first two is still a great read.

Now, a couple of titles which I insist that you (and pretty much everybody I meet) simply must read are "Flowers for Algernon" and "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell". The former is short enough that it's excellent for a break between reading lengthier novels or a series, and is an insightfully written and deeply moving story; the latter is a remarkable, unique book which evokes a palpable, earthy reality in all its descriptions of faeries and magic that I can't quite compare with anything else.

I'd recommend those to more-or-less anyone, but as you're a fan of sci-fi you positively HAVE TO READ "The Stars My Destination" and "The Demolished Man", both by Alfred Bester. Apart from saying that they're written with an intense, captivating focus which makes them absolutely dominate your thoughts and force you to return to them at every opportunity until you reach the climax, I don't really want to tell you anything about them. Coming to them completely fresh is by far the best way to experience them. Just trust me! They're awesome :)

Lots of good stuff here, thank you very much for the recommendations! Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell was really good, I ended up loving that book!

Well, my two favorite books are Contact by Carl Sagan and We Children of Bahnhof Zoo.

Contact is the story of a girl who becomes an astronomer(?), it's a sci fi. The way Sagan writes is so good, keeps you into the story.

It was probably the book I read the fastest untill I started reading the story of Christiane F. last year. It's so much better than the movie, so deep, so detailed. By the way it's the story of a girl in Germany who got addicted to heroin, so it's not a beautiful story at all. She tells all that happened, all she felt and thought.

I've always wanted to read something by Carl Sagan, Contact looks like a good starting point. I've read a few books on Heroin addiction (Diary of a Drug Fiend). I can usually handle it if it's not too depressing. Thank you!

A Clockwork Orange
the book is absolutely a masterpiece - it is so fun and interesting trying to piece together the language;
imo, that's the whole point of the book (aside from the commentary on human nature)
i mean it when i say fuck the movie, it took the most broad strokes from the book and (literally) perverted them - fuck Kubrick for that pos pardon language - that's how much i like the book and despise him for souring so many people on the story when it is one everyone should try to read
and to be sure, the acts shown in the movie are present in the book, but they're of course presented in a different (can't say better, considering subject) way

Completely agree. A Clockwork Orange is definitely on my favs list. I remember re-reading the book after watching the movie and feeling confused by how different the message was. The book just seems to feel much less dark and hopeless at the end.

Thanks for your input!

Beware that it IS quite the undertaking to read and glean it all (on your own at least, which you must do at least for the first read-through) - i actually got fed up and quit within a couple chapters several times but then i buckled down and would read like three chapters and then re-read them a a few times before moving on (i then ended up reading the whole book straight through like three times lol); it is definitely a book to read more than once and which will test your patience but it is worth it :) A comparable feeling to it was figuring out all the rules of Mu Cartographer ^^

The Sprawl Trilogy: Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive

Pretty much the definitive cyberpunk text.

Swords of Good Men is the beginning of a pretty damn good low fantasy trilogy. Bought it for 10 bucks at barnes & noble on a whim a year or two ago.

Currently reading Promise of Blood. It's really, really good.

Maybe try David Eddings Belgariad Saga. Only the first saga, the second one (the Malloreon) is not as good.

Yeah the Belgariad was quite enjoyable, loved this one when I was in highschool. The Malloreon had it's moments, but felt a little less necessary. Thanks for your input!

Flight: An 8 book series of sci-fi and fantasy stories that are in graphic novel format. Quite interesting.:)

Amulet: I've only got the first 7 books in the series, but they are graphic novels as well.

The Walking Dead: It's kind of slow now, but there are some really good storylines to be read!

Blankets: Very good book. A little bit of melancholy with it.

The Rat Queens. A highly entertaining comic book series (which can also be had in TPB format).

Just a small sampling.;)

I've read most of the Ender series, was a little dissapointed by some of the newer books, but I should take a look again. Elantris looks pretty sweet, thanks for the recommendation!

Aside from what was mentioned before I'd add. Fantasy:
MYTH series by Asprin -- light and fun fantasy
Sword of truth by Goodkind -- blood and gore and all you like in SoIaF
Sci-Fi:
Heinlein's "Door into summer" is a must.
Paul Di Filippo has nice sci-fi/cyberpunkish style.

Also: Kinky Friedman, all of it.
