Question about keys

So i participated in a (ninja) keygiveaway in our forum. It turned out, i was fast enough to grab a key. While i put the key in steam, it showed me the message, that i already have the game. Did i waste the key with that, or was it still open to others?
Because normally when i activate a key, it gets used as soon as i click next....
