I noticed that Epic Battle Fantasy 3 came out on Steam recently.
Doesn't sound like it would be your kind of thing, but it's free - so worth mentioning so you can check/try it out, see if you'd like it, and ditch it if you don't.
No romance, some fan service things, overall silly/nonsensical feel to the game. You might have to restart some of the boss fights but from what I remember (maybe three years ago), the difficulty should be reasonable.
Played it a really long time ago on a flash game site and thought it was really well made (for a free game) - installed it yesterday and looking forward to playing it sometime in the near future.

I'm playing through it now, and I find it a blast. Considering what you like it probably isn't your cup of tea (it is light on plot). But given the price, it doesn't hurt to try!

Divine Divinity is one of my personal faves! played it for like 80 hours
it's a Diablo-esque RPG with more open world and open questing than Diablo itself, and is filled with humour
also it's cheap and there's a magic statue that can turn you into a kitten
on Deus Ex: personally I wait until games are priced at much more reasonable amounts before buying them unless I'm very confident I'll like it and want to try it out asap, which is usually only the case with long-awaited sequels in game series I really like
so I'd say it depends on how much you like Deus Ex

The game of thrones (not telltale) has a nice story, but the gameplay it's weak, if you like asoiaf you should play it

To elaborate on this it's similar to Dragon Age/Mass Effect just as their later games Of Orcs and Men and Styx are.

Take a look at Avernum. I know you aksed for first person, but still these games are all lore and story :)

Bought every game they have on steam. I knew them years before they came on the platform :)
50+ hours of gameplay for each game, it makes an eternity lol

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Wasteland 2.
I'd also recommend Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 and Planescape, but those aren't on Steam at the moment.

Do I get it corrently you already played Enderal?
You... didn't play SWKOTOR? D:
Oh, and while I'd say Oblivion is worse than Morrowind, it's still very much worth playing.

Ah, good. What about Dragon's Dogma? You didn't like Vampires the Masquerade?

You own Alpha Protocol but only played it half an hour. Its a good Action/Espionage/RPG Mix.
Same goes for Banner Saga, nice Tactic RPG with a good story.
Gothic/Gothic II if you want to try out a classic RPG (and havent already, because that game was released before Steam was there).
Same for Beyond Good and Evil

I can't remember why I quit playing alpha protocol. Something didn't work or I didn't like it, can't really remember. Banner Saga I just didn't like in general -- I can appreciate it's a fantastic game, but I was just bored. Maybe sometime later when I'm in the mood for it.

+1 for the Gothic games.Besides Skyrim, they are my favorite medieval RPGs, because the worlds feel so alive. Also, Gothic 3 is great and way better than it's shitty reputation, which comes mainly from being released way too early and full of bugs. Fortunately, the devs released a patch which fixes most of the bugs.
You can ignore Gothic 4 (Arcania). It's like the Star Wars prequels: we don't talk about that and pretend it never happened.

Hum as I just finished Dragon's Dogma in a gaming marathon, I would recommend that. But I know it's kind of weird and difficult to compare to games like skyrim, the witcher or dark souls. Still, it might be worthwhile checking it out!?

The best and unique thing about it was upgrading my pawn. It's really nice to "lend" my personal mercenary to other people and seeing him coming back from those missions with more experience and stuff. Sadly that pretty much stops after level 70 (less players).
After that I started the expansion, which is a bigger dungeon with a lot of high end loot, which was just plain fun to explore and then upgrading my gear :P
Sadly it falls short in other categories. It's missing this vibrant world the witcher has and the combat-difficulty relies a lot on your equipment. Felling a big ogre is impossible until you have the right gear, which means grinding or recruiting an over-powered pawn from someone else. However i couldn't really stop playing this game. Although the world is a bit empty and the story ... confusing at best - i just loved exploring the world and finding interesting new stuff.

Lack of players isn't really an issue, Past 70 most players won't need pawns. I only get my own to deal with certain resistances so I didn't have to change equipment. As for knowledge it's more a case that once you get past two stars the requirements for some of the enemies/locations become really specific.

I just started playing that one yesterday. So far it's enjoyable. The combat in particular is actually really good (being able to grab onto and then climb bigger creatures is just amazing) and the way you progress your skills is also pretty interesting.

What I found annoying, and you may find out about that, too if you go after quina, is that suddenly some enemies have a much higher level than you without any indication about that.
So in that particular case I found a group of bandits, like I had slain before, but one particular guy was so much higher in level that he just slashed through my group. The problem with such enemies is, that they also have significantly higher defense (again without looking different than their brothers), and if you still only have your normal equipment and don't know much about the mechanics you won't be able to break their "damage treshhold" and thus not be able to injure them at all.
That's quite different in Dark Souls, where you, at least in my impression, do see if an enemy is beyond your means just because of it's design and/but if you still think you can handle them you are at least capable of hurting said enemy - it will just be difficult.
I do like that grapple mechanic, too, and I really enjoyed fighting in the game, but after those encounters I changed my playstyle and hired a lot stronger pawn, that could help me at least in a situation, where I stumbled into something as described above. It's not that I think it's wrong to add enemies that are beyond my means, but other games do a better job in making clear that I am literally unable to beat the enemies in a specific area. In this game I had to use trial and error, which let me then think about, how Quina was actually able to run past them.

I don't know what to recommend that you don't already have. I prefer isometric style party based RPGs, but Fallout New Vegas was the first, first person RPG I really enjoyed. Edit Again: I take that back, the original Deus Ex was the first, first person RPG I enjoyed. If you count the old AD&D Gold Box games where the adventuring takes place in first person but the combat is from a top-down, tile based perspective, then that would be the first. I don't like third person that much, but maybe try the Witcher series. I have all of them on GOG, but I haven't played them yet.
Did you not like Pillars of Eternity? It has a lot of story, lore and dialog. I played several hours of it offline when my internet was down one weekend. I really liked it, but I decided to hold off until I had time to devote to it.
I saw your comment above about Divinity: Original Sin, and I can understand. I started out playing with a friend, but he moved and we couldn't get our timing right to get back to it. I've started twice playing with my niece, but she's never played an RPG before and wants to break into every locked door, get into fights and not doesn't pay attention to the quests or what people say when she talks to them. I started a solo game a while back, but it's not the same once you've played it coop, so I've never gotten very far.
The new Deus Ex is OK, but I haven't been impressed with any of the dialog yet. So far all of the dialog options are just asking for more information, not making actual choices. I'm still in the starting hub area, so maybe it opens up later. I keep getting distracted. So many of the NPC citizens just ask to be punched in the face, and then I end up fighting off the cops. I'm trying to play non-lethal, so after I've scratched my violence itch, I have to reload and get serious again.
EDIT: Check out Dex. It's a side scrolling RPG. I thought it looked interesting, so I picked it up during the Summer sale.

Deus Ex is indeed worth it, play "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" first and see if you like the gameplay and story, because it is pretty much the same but improved on almost every single aspect, not to mention that HR takes place before MD.

If you enjoy Deus Ex maybe "Remember Me" could be for you.
It is not really an RPG more like an Action Adventure.
It has a female protagonist, cool Story in an dystopian world and the combat is really intuitive and even on the hardest difficulty doable without frustration.
Basically this game was so good that i started to play action adventure type games after it.
Never bothered with this Genre before.

From what you have ans still not played: Legend of grimlock, bioshock 2, divinity II, eschalon, fable. kult heretic kingdoms, then elderscrolls morrowind and oblivion.
from what you dont have: system shock (1 and 2), underrail, lords of xulima.

SW:TOR. I know it is an MMO but it plays best as a single player rpg. The questlines are awesome, it's Star Wars and it's free* :D.
The Banner Saga (which you idled?) is one that I strongly recommend giving a go and Valkyria Chronicles is another. South Park: The Stick of Truth is a bit short for an rpg and the humor may not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed and it is worth checking out.

Grandia II is really fun. The first one needs to come to Steam, too.

You can see which games I already own on my steam account, so preferably check that first before suggesting one. :P I've played pretty much all of the big name titles that have interested me, so many something indie instead?
I love games with strong female characters and romance stories, though there are so few (I think Bioware pretty much has the monopoly). I don't mind JRPGs so long as they aren't weird harem/fan service things. I'm very much a story and lore person, so even if the combat sucks I'll probably still enjoy it (e.g. kingdoms of amalur). I prefer medieval games or sci fi, but will look at other genres too.
I don't like games where 90% of the game's appeal is how difficult it is. I don't want games where I have to reload each fight tens of times before I work out the best strategy, I'd rather play in a way that I enjoy and gives me some flexibility to choose a style that suits me.
Extra: considering buying the new deus ex, but it's a lot of money at the moment. Worth it?
edit: I prefer fluid combat systems and first person/over shoulder third person to point and click/grids/top down.
