I believe we should be more open minded and do research on how to make homosexuals straight and straight people homosexual because of the vast possibilities that will come with sex drive customizations. Not only should everyone have full control over who they are, but some people are treated criminals instead of victims. Some homosexuals do not want to be homosexual as a simple example, but they say that things like serial rapists and serial killers both get off doing what they're doing the same as how we get off from sex. If we can do more research to see if that is true, we could not only give people a bigger option on who they are, like if the day comes when people are no longer immature with homosexuality, people can decide to be gay if they are tired of the opposite sex. More importantly, pedophiles, rapists, and maybe would be serial killers can be cured from their temptation. Some people might want to customize fetishes too in order to get rid of it completely or to please their mate. There, I said it... Basically stop treating pedophiles and such as criminals but as victims to a mental disability and we should do research to cure them!
Comment has been collapsed.
do you really think people would become a pedophile by choice? it's at the very least taboo if not completely illegal in most countries, and would get you killed or at least locked up. what would anyone gain from it? kids are also annoying and gross, no thank you.
i could definitely see people deciding they want to be gay or lesbian for a while, if they've come out of bad relationships with the opposite sex. haha.

I highly doubt anyone would have the ability to just shift their mind to something harmful to others without someone to enforce them to change back. Even so, I am not for forcing people to change. I am simply for people having control. If people want to go to prison instead of changing to what their society deems as criminal activity, they should be allowed to.

you know, when you forbid a human f something, it only makes them want it more. a.k.a no criminal, pedophile or any of that kind would allow to be submited to this proceedure, and im sure that could kinda cause damage in the brain, since them machine would be figthing hard against it (im no medic to know if this si truth or not). also if that happened, then organizations would use this same tecnology, to awake the criminal that is in everybody, making more criminals than the ones that are takeon out of the street.
Comment has been collapsed.
The procedure, if done correctly, should make them want something more. Making something illegal doesn't make people magically want it, but if they want it they will want it more so if it is illegal. What I am saying is make it so they don't want it at all and replace the desires with others.

To be brief:
Genetic modification: 1) we're still pretty far medically and scientifically being able to do this with any kind of reliability; 2) it isn't/won't be a silver bullet, especially for things that have rather profound psychological, societal, and behavioral contexts involved to them.
Human sexuality is already a spectrum, gay/straight aren't on/off switches.
Way more than sexual satisfaction is involved with the pleasure centers of our brains.
We already do lots of research in neurosciences, genetics, physiology, and biochemical fields related to these issues and conditions, not to mention in the social sciences. It's not a monolithic "dump funding into gene-research". Genetic tailoring the way you're envisioning it is still science fiction.
Comment has been collapsed.
It isn't science fiction like you think it is. Additionally, the only reason we are so far from real progress is because it is so controversial to people. There is no reason to stay away from this project because of fears it will be difficult, that is laziness and cowardliness. Regardless, you claim we are already doing lots of research on it when the projects that had any progress, at least to my knowledge, have been shut down due to people getting upset because there is nothing wrong with homosexuality. Regardless, being that trialing a pedophile to time in prison is a death sentence, I don't see the relevancy to how reliable it is when we can experiment constantly until we find a solution. Giving up is stupid and I, quite frankly, believe in numbers more than morals. If putting pedophiles through constant experiments to find a solution to not only protect our children but to help future pedophiles is what it takes, then grand. Don't get me started on how I feel about serial killers and serial rapists being experimented on. :p
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes it is. Actual genetic engineering of human beings is still in its infancy; at the current moment we're mainly researching gene therapies for specific diseases, not altering genetic code in newborns. The genetic modifications we're likely to see first within the next decade-25 years are those related to specific diseases and genetic conditions.
And controversy is not really the reason for the "slow progress". To be sure people like to write articles about potential ramifications (which I agree are overblown imaginations most of the time), but honestly this kind of scientific progress just takes time, especially considering the complexity of what is being done, and takes time to get it right, which is obviously important. Honestly the much bigger impediment to progress is lack of funding for the sciences that could make the breakthroughs needed to go further. I agree 100% that there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, but please cite the studies/research shut down on homosexuality and genetics because of controversy, I'd be interested to hear about that if it has indeed happened.
I'm not really sure what you're talking about with imprisoned pedophiles. Reliability is an incredibly important facet of the scientific method, i.e. how we do modern-day science. If you're actually advocating for trial-and-error human experimentation on live prisoners, wow that is really fucked up. Not to mention really troubling from both a moral and legal perspective, even if they are completely convicted dangerous pedophiles, killers, and rapists. I get that this is the unpopular opinions thread but still, jesus.
But anyway. Conceptually you're just way off still. What you're describing isn't how science works.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're making science more complicated than it is, which is silly. Science is just a repetitive process of guessing until a more likely choice is available to serve is a theory. Simple as that. As for your major concern on the safety of pedophiles, serial killers, and rapists, I find that amusing. Who was there to stop these people from doing harm to their victims? If they are going to treat people like trash, why not treat them like trash back for the sake of a better future? This is how silly our world works. We complain about a problem, treat the criminals like victims but do not do anything to treat them but just cast them away into prison or death sentence, and we still wonder why it is a problem.

Pokemon is overrated

Steam is still a shitty glorified DRM service that lags too much and is still poorly optimized

The "Big Bang" and Darwinian Evolution sounds crazy and takes just as much faith to believe in as Biblical Creation.
Neither, biological evolution nor biblical creation should be accepted as science, as they cannot be observed, reproduced / experimented on, or proven...
As such, this big bang and evolution nonsense should not be taught in schools as fact.
Comment has been collapsed.
Biological evolution is not the same as adaptation. When i was taught evolution, they claimed one kind of animal became a totally different kind. this cannot be recreated or observed.
evolution, there must be a change of kinds. bird to lizard, lizard to fish. dog to horse.
the lizard is still a lizard.

Hm, just to get things clear, I do believe in this :B
I just think there should be a difference between telling kids that "something is true", and telling then that "the chances of something being true are so high, that it's most likely that it's true"
Comment has been collapsed.
With science the best you can get is "the chances of something being true are so high, that it's most likely that it's true" and judging by the results of scientific progress I'd say that's a pretty good approach. The reason you cannot be 100% sure is that you must allow a however unlikely possiblity for a however small error. Once you find evidence that points out the error (and you are always on the lookout) you correct it. By this logic, even if you are 100% right, you still cannot be 100% sure that you are right.
Having said that, for some topics including evolution and Big Bang, the amount of supportive evidence is so overwhelming and comprehensive that there is relatively little room for error. There is room for improving our understanding but it would take something truly absurd to show that these two theories are wrong in principle. One would have better chances by betting for a flat earth at the centre of the universe than those two being wrong.

Not only it can be observated, it's a prerequisite for it to be accepted as a theory, but it doesn't mean our observations mean exactly what we see.
evolution is a theory supported by many, many scientific observations, and it's unlikely that new discoveries will change what we know about it, but it doesn't turn it into a fact!
Geez we found about quantum mechanics a while a go! it was unlikely that our previous physics knowledge would change, but now even the most well established theories have this and that little flaws that can't be explained because of the way sub-atomic particles behave :3
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup it is! :)
As I said earlier, I don't deny any of these theories. I strongly believe evolution is a thing!
I just think they should teach "this is the most acceptable theory" instead of "this is true".
I'm not saying it's like this everywhere, but back when I was in school some kids and even teachers used to mock people who questioned such things! (ok, it's more of a social problem, but the "misteaching" supports it)
Not so long ago they used to make fun of people who cogitated the possibility that the continents once were joined together. Boom, now it's the most accepted theory.
Not so long ago, they teached in school that it was impossible for tornadoes to happen in the south hemisphere. Boom, Brazil had 2 already.
Not so long ago, matter behaved in a way, energy behaved another way, and it was impossible for photons to behave as matter, since they always follow a "wave" behavior. Boom, when observed they act as matter :V
Comment has been collapsed.
The problem is - when scientists say 'this is the most current, acceptable theory' (which can be said about anything in real world, really) instead of 'this is true' then all kinds of idiots come out of woodwork and say 'we have this book written by illiterate shepherds where it says it is TRUE, and all you have is a theory, so bow down to us' making people cringe and also claim it is true as kneejerk. And it won't change until more people understand what scientists call a theory :|
Comment has been collapsed.
The saddest thing is that, while all school curricula include science, they usually limit themselves to teaching "facts" as a dogma rather than teach what science actually is and how it is done. Knowing some things about the world is important but by teaching them this way they give false impressions about science and then you have zombies walking around saying "science is a religion".
Just ask a high school - maybe even university - graduate what Newton's laws of motion or gravity is and you have a good chance of getting a decent answer. But if you ask them what is the scientific method, what is a control or what is the difference between scientific theory and scientific law you will either get dump looks from them or you will be the one giving them dumb looks after hearing their response.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're not thinking it through. That's adaptation within a species. Show me a fruit fly you've turned into a cat (or any other animal you've switched from one species to another) and then you'll have a leg on which to stand.

I understand the concept of a scientific theory and how it's different from an everyday theory!
please read my post that starts with "yup it is! :)"
I clearly state what a theory is, how so close of "truth" it is, and how my problem is about how they teach it instead of denying the meaning of it
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok, I think there's been some misunderstanding about my point of view here... I'll try to get things clear one more time:
I understand the difference between an everyday theory and a scientific theory.
I understand a scientific theory isn't just something someone came up with to explain things... It needs scientific observation and evidences to support a scientific theory for it to be accepted.
I understand that there is a great amount of evidence supporting darwinian evolution and the big bang. So much that it's high unlikely that they are wrong.
That being said, when I say that theories should be taught at schools as "something that is high likely to be" instead of "something that is true", I'm not saying theories should be denied, or even treated as unreliable information. There's been ages of study for these theories to become what they are today, which makes them some of the most reliable information we can get, BUT, that doesn't make them facts!
Now, when i say theories aren't facts, I'm not saying they are lies. I'm saying that our technology gets better everyday, and as it gets better, we have better ways of scientifically observing these theories so we can have a better understanding about them.
We believed that earth was flat because we didn't understand how could someone stand still on both sides of a globe without falling, it was a pretty well established theory back then (i guess). Then we develop enough technology to understand gravity.
We believed energy couldn't change it's behavior, and only acted as a wave (well accepted theory here! it's classical physics), then someone came up with the concept of quantum mechanics and now we know energy can behave like matter given certain circunstances.
We believed gravity was a force that attracted bodies towards each other (Newton stuff here, another damn well accepted theory!), but after Einstein's relative principles, now it's debatable if gravity is really a force, or just the way bodies warp the space-time around them, without generating force at all!
As I said, theories aren't facts. Of course they should still be taught at schools, and IMO it's very important to do so, but I think it's better to teach kids that, it's unlikely, but something they are learning may change, rather than teaching them that something is a fact carved in stone and later tell them "oops, I was wrong".
Comment has been collapsed.
Evolution can be and is observed, reproduced, experimented on and proven. Evolution is a fact, and the theory of evolution simply explains what happens. If you seriously disagree with it you neither read the actual theory, nor you are familiar with the scientific term "theory".
As for Big Bang, it's just a misnomour. No one ever stated that there was an actual bang.
