I'm planning to buy SS Apex raw keyboard but I won't share it with my roommate so I have a question if there is any way to connect a keyboard (that it would work) without rebooting my pc?

I can connect my wireless Microsoft Keyboard 800 without having to restart the PC, and I think that's true for most USB Keyboards.

True in the case of most USB Keyboards.

+1, All USB keyboards can be plugged and unplugged without restarting PC, those what can't be plugged and unplugged just need their own special drivers to be installed. PS2 can't and never will. I don't know about conversions PS2toUSB or USBtoPS2, I've never tried those.

PS2 port? Then no. You can only do it with the ones that have a usb port.
Googled it, has usb so you won't have any problem.

Under Linux, you do not need to reboot the machine for this. :3

it shouldn't restart your computer....and even If it does, will that less than 1 minute waiting even matter?

anything that is usb based should be plug and play

just some need drivers some do not so if you do not have the driver for it but i have never seen a usb keyboard or mouse yet to fail to work without drivers at least in windows

just get a usb keyboard and keep it with the pc

though if you can not trust him with your keyboard why trust him with your pc?

If you have a PS/ port keyboard, try buying a PS/2-to-USB converter. That should work. If you have a USB keyboard, then there's no problem plugging it in without restarting your computer.

I have PS/2 keyboard, and I can freely plug/unplug it without restarting. I don't know why is this as it is, maybe my motherboard supports it, or just Windows 7 has auto-detect feature.

This quite much depends on your system, state of it and interface you are about to use.

System

Linux - shouldn't be any deal.
Windows - try asking system to rescan for new devices and/or install special drivers into system (may require a reboot but just once) if it doesn't work
Other - hard to tell without knowing specification.

State of system

As long as you didn't:

  • remove driver database,
  • damage/remove other part of system,
  • disable basic system services

you should be fine.

Interface

RS232 - currently non-existant in new devices; rescanning should do it if not detected.
PS/2 - slowly being removed out of market; rescanning for new devices should do it if not detected.
USB - unless very specific driver required, it should work; if you install driver once (reboot may be required after installing) and not remove it (driver not the keyboard :) ), it should work without issues later on.
Bluetooth - same as above.

I hope it helps :)

If you won't tolerate someone near your keyboard, living with them doesn't look like a good idea either. Just find a new roommate.

You can short out the port if it is PS/2. While it may work it is not recommended. USB is fine.

Why don't you just lock your PC with a password if your sister won't leave it alone?

Tell roommate to not touch it? Why should he/she inconvenience you? Just set up a password if anything.
