I pre-purchased Hitman on steam ($50.61 wallet + 9.38 debit card) . On 3rd november when Indian currency got supported it became much cheaper so I asked for a refund. But apparently someone at steam screwed up and refunded me wallet money twice. So what do you guys think I should do?

A small giveaway from humble monthly bundle. Lvl 2.

Edit Note: Going by the current poll (though 'spend it' seems to be catching up) I have contacted the steam support . Thanks for your replies . Anyways
I will keep this thread open until the giveaway is over.

I would just wait.
Do not write them and do not spend it.
After 2 months I would use them as my money.
But probably they will revoke them soon.

I wouldn't really call it thievery if someone hands you money.

EDIT: Not condoning keeping the money, though.

So imagine that your mom just found $ 100 in your very old jacket / trousers. You got it from grandparent's f. ex. Years passed, so now it is your mother money, right?

If I left an abandoned pair of pants at her house and she found money in it years later I wouldn't mind if she kept it. I obviously didn't need it. My concern is moreso on why she's digging through old clothes of mine.

Nethertheless - it would be your decision and your mom should tell you about it :p

It would be the right thing to do, yes, just as returning the money to steam would be the right thing to do. But I never said it wasn't, I said I don't think it's theft. There's a difference between making a morally wrong choice and breaking the law.

I voted for him to contact steam. I was actually in a similar situation a while back. I ordered a pizza online, using the last dollar on a gift card and paying the rest in cash. When the guy came I signed the receipt and then he walked off, thinking I had paid for all of the order online, so I called him back so I could pay him.

Honestly Valve are bit in the business of giving away money, it won't be long until they notice and take 50 back out of your account.

I would wait. If they don't notice it in a couple of months you should be safe to use it. It's their fault, so I don't see a reason to contact them, but don't spend it for a while.

It's not their problem. It is bug and somebody can lose their work because of it. This is thievery

Depending on the location, typically after something like 60 days, anything left on your property by another party can be considered "abandoned" and the landowner can claim it as his/her own. This is similar circumstance and wouldn't be called thievery at all. Plus, thievery implies intent to steal - taking something that isn't yours. However, once money is in your Steam wallet, it is technically "yours". You just have to deal with the consequences if Steam decides to charge it back.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes it would be abadoned, but only if it is left on public place. And yes - it's not a thievery. It's a kind of thievery, where we should tell the truth and because of our greedness - we act normal and silence. That's not right :(

If you spend it now, they won't be able to deduct it from your wallet and I don't think they have any right to take it from your bank.

They could revoke the games you bought with it though. I don't think they will, but it is possible.

Burn through real fast then. Many games have a short enough playtime that you can finish them within a week. Worst case, you played one more game, for free. The error is still on their side so what could they punish you for?

Never said it was. It's hard for me to sympathize with a big corporation though sorry to say. Too many of them are soul-less these days and would mug your grandmother if they could get away with it, so why should I care?

Imagine you forgot about your phone and I found it. Hmm... What should I do?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What to do? Find a better analogy perhaps. The situation you described is attributed to an individual and much more personal, whereas the other is not and just some big company that doesn't care about you as a person but rather as nothing more than a customer for their business. One is personal, the other is highly impersonal, and as far as I'm concerned that means a world of difference. I do care about people and fellow human beings, but some corporation whose purpose is making a profit? Nope, it is hard for me to care.

I worked in a corporation for a 1,5 month. They care for everybody. This is business and all businesses prioritize clients over everything else.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well it's good that you feel like yours did but many don't. Such is the reality. And the bigger they get the more that any 'soul' that they would have otherwise had gets lost along the way. If you think that Valve cares about you then think again. To them you are a revenue stream, and the only thing that keeps them honest is the court of public opinion and customer backlash. See: paid Skyrim mods fiasco (as far as relatively recent events go)

You surely never work in any customer service job. You also generalize they are bad and finally - the worst thing - you are judging them

Actually I have. I have worked in a retail store as a computer repair technician and also did phone support for a internet service provider for over a year. Maybe we all start out wide-eyed, idealistic, and naive. Then sooner or later life steps in and shows/teaches you how things can be and are. And you learn..... if you are lucky then hopefully not the hard way. There are very few companies that I have ever seen that I would put any sort of trust into on a personal level.

But still - even if you would work with valve - thievery is thievery, being jackass is being jackass.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not thievery. It's an error. In order for it to be thievery there has to be a crime committed and intent, which clearly there wasn't.

You can be 'better' if you like. I'll just be practical in the way that life experience has taught me.

Keeping someone money and pretend nothing has happened is a kind of thievery.

When you see someone stabbed a person with bags fullfied with money (Gaben? :>) and then run away leaving you alone with dead body and thousand of dollars - grabbing that money could be practical for you (because that damn rich government!! ) but surely - it is not moral...

Contact steam support and let them know. The person who respond for your refund maybe lost his/her job and he/she has to take out of his/her pocket to cover the mistake if they can't get money back from you and that's not really a good thing. Even though valve could earn billions of dollars but the person who respond for your ticket maybe just an Indian work with minimum wage so do what you think it's good.

If Valve is the kind of company that would garnish an employee's wages (especially one being paid very little int he first place) for an error that their CRM should never have allowed in the first place, that is not a company I would have any sympathy for.

If they can find the error, they can easily reclaim it. You don't have to do a thing.

i would spend it, lot of accounts get extra money daily and valve still does it.
if a person losses his job because of this its his own fault, also if u spend it the money/games wont get revoked because u litterly did nothing except asking for a refund
