Being proud out of yourself isnt same as discriminating others.
Im proud i worked out and lost some weight isnt same as me bulling overweight people, etc etc
Fighting for your rights isnt same as taking rights from ones who already have them. It doesnt have to be freaking hunger games.

Why aren't you replying in the first place?
Why would you be proud of your sexual orientation?
Comment has been collapsed.
Because of people like you, who try to tear us down just because we experience love differently than you.
So I am proud to still be here, still be incredibly happy with who I am, despite the constant hate from homophobes.

What the fuck
How am I tearing you down? I am absolutely not. I have always been supportive of people, whomever they love. Please stop making up stuff, that's absolutely inappropriate.
My questions still stands tho
Why would you be proud of your sexual orientation?

Why would you be proud of your sexual orientation?
How is this supportive though?

Yeah, I know, I've seen his threads in the past. I was just kinda bored yesterday, so I went "aight, let's try and see where it goes". ^^

It's not Pride as in arrogance. It's Pride as in the opposite of shame.
Because people have been shamed, harassed, fired, brainwashed, tortured, raped, beaten and killed for simply being in love with someone else. Human beings. Like you and me. And it's still going on in a third of the world. And it's been going on for thousands of years.
So the ones who can love who they love and be happy to be alive and to be able to live another day choose to celebrate not having to be ashamed for it.
And to remember those who are made to be ashamed for their heart. And those who came before them and couldn't be proud.
Comment has been collapsed.
And it's been going on for thousands of years.
Since you bring it up I'll take it as an excuse to go on a little detour about a topic that crossed my mind yesterday. The perception of Homosexuality during the ages.
I'm a bit of a history enthusiast and beside the great battles and global politics I always find it interesting to also learn how the people lived and stuff like the role of women in various societies or their perception of homosexuality.
I might be mistaken but it wasn't thousands of years but rather a thousand or maybe 1500. Surprisingly many of our ancestors were much more openminded about homosexuality than many of us are nowadays. I'll just throw around some tidbits about the few antique cultures where I know a little bit about their stance regarding homosexuality. Please keep in mind that in history the life of the upper classes is always much better documented than those of commoners because in most cultures those were usually illiterate.
I'll go from totally fabulous to do whatever floats your boat:
The Spartans: The Spartans were totally gay. This is not a modern misconception but to a large degree documented. It makes sense considering every young Spartan would live in training camps outside of town from a rather young age on and would continue living in those colleges even after their military training had finished and they have reached full citizenship. On top of that every young Spartan was given an experienced soldier as a Mentor. It's well documented those experienced soldiers often had carnal relationships with their young protΓ©gΓ©es. There's also evidence that suggests that lesbianism was also not unheard of in Sparta but the life of women in antiquity is never as well documented as the life of men.
Japan: Homosexuality has been accepted behaviour in Japan since at least the 10th century. In ancient times the love between men was actually considered the purest form of love. Never was homosexuality considered a sin in Japan and only relatively recently the perception has started to somewhat change.
Ancient Greece beside Sparta: Ancient Greece in general was pretty gay. Maybe it wasn't as commonplace as in Sparta but Homosexuality was by no means considered scandalous.
Rome: I'm not sure it was like that from the beginning in the times of the Republic or only later during the Empire but for a wealthy roman having sex with both his female AND male slaves was by no means a big deal. Sex between two men wasn't considered shameful, at least not for the top part. However there seems to have been a stigma in being a bottom.
Those are the few examples I'm aware of but if anybody knows about the stance of other ancient cultures regarding Homosexuality I'd appreciate if you share your thoughts.
It would be intersting to know what for example barbarian cultures like Celts or Skythes thought about Homosexuality. Or also Egypt or the Persians. Or the various steppe civilizations.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sorry to continue the tangent. Also a bit of a history buff and I have studied a bit of history at university.
While it's true that homosexuality was more accepted in ancient Greece than it would be during later times, the evidence of how accepted it is are sparse, and the writing we do have about it was often written hundreds of years after the fact. That's a pretty big problem with history writing during the ancient times in general, we're basically relying on sources that themselves were the history books of their time, rather than primary sources. We can say with some certainty that the Greeks were more open and accepting than say the 13th century Christians were, but we can't really say a whole lot more than that. Also chances are pretty big that the perception of homosexuality would have varied a varied a fare bit depending on exactly where and when, we are after all talking about a pretty large timespan (depending on the exact definition of "ancient Greece" it might well have been a timespan larger than that between the time of Ancient Greece and now).
This gets further clouded by the fact a lot of what we "know" about the sexual habits of ancient Greece were in fact written with the intent of making Greek society seem more decadent and hedonistic, and were written in the last couple of hundred years. Things like this does make it very hard to know what's fact and what's just made its way into history books as "facts". This is generally a pretty common issue with a lot of history writing, it's hard to untangle facts from fiction when certain things have been repeated over and over again over a long period of time. Heck, we're pretty bad at this even for more recent things.
A more recent example (not related to people's sexuality, just meant to illustrate a point) would be the depiction of the Soviet union during WW2. Most western sources got their information about the Soviet Union from the Germans, who in tern were not always the most reliable writers, and many of them did have reasons to depict the Soviet Union one way or another (often to paint themselves in a better light), and thus a lot of misconceptions and exaggerations and falsehoods did end up making their way into our history books, which are now just treated as "truths" even when they're not (add in the political interests in places like the US to portray the Soviet Union in a really negative light and you've got a recipe for bad history writing). Pretty certain the same thing happened on the Soviet side as well, but I know less about their history writing.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't think I have much to add to that because to my limited knowledge everything you just said is correct.
Full disclosure I did not study history. I mostly like to watch history videos on YouTube. Stuff like Kings and Generals, Historia Civilis, occasionally Invicta and the YouTube channel Old Cultures of the University Hamburg.
Also my main interest was the Roman Republic and Empire and then I started branching out from there.
Comment has been collapsed.
Spartans and generally ancient Greeks seem pretty gay by today's standards but it also stems from them being very misogynistic and biased towards men, so that's kind of a double edged sword. Also a lot of the time it wasn't what we would call homosexuality today (as in sex between two consenting men) but more akin to rape of young men by older authority figures, although it was often idealized in literature. The same applies to Japan and the practice of "WakashudΓ΄" (which indeed started to get frowned upon not so long ago, in the 19th century Meiji era where Japan opened up its borders to the western world).
As for Persia / Turkey there's also some similar unsavory history of homosexuality (which still endures today. Lesbians had it better, in some parts of these areas it was not uncommon for widows or even wives to be in lesbian relationships and it was generally accepted by men (can't remember theTurkish term for it though :/).
Medieval Europe was much more accepting of homosexuality than in the later Renaissance - Modern era, where the religious authorities cracked down on it. There were a lot of scandals about poor nobles prostituting their younger sons to wealthier men in Renaissance Italy and among other things it prompted the Church to actively hunt homosexuals, where they more or less turned a blind eye before. There are accounts of homosexual medieval monks for example, and the general consensus was more along the lines of "lol they're having buttsex" than "filthy creatures, burn them".
Comment has been collapsed.
You bring up a good point about homosexuality in antiquity often (if not in the majority of cases) not being between two consenting men of equal status but rather involving a significant power difference.
Now that you mention it I recently saw part of a documentary when channel hopping about the political impact of coffee where they mentioned those beardless young men (dancing boys), but completely forgot about it. Apparently they were a common sight in coffeehouses and the practice did not necessarily always involve sex but was rather some spiritualized (?) form of erotic but I should have guessed it didn't always stop there.
The last paragraph about Medieval Europe being more accepting of homosexuality than the later Renaissance was completely new to me and thus the most interesting. I might have more to add later but I'm playing Zombie Army 4 with my buddies in 10 minutes so I had to cut it short.
Thanks for sharing your insights π

Interesting. It's almost as if a couple of religions imposed their dim-witted view of people on the world somehow, right?
And hey since you bring up history, that gives me an excuse to mention this magnificent site (LGBTQHistory.org), and yet another inclusive perception in the world's history.
The First Nations (aka Native Americans) not only had no problem with the concept of Queerness, they even had a word for it. Traditionally, many Indigenous cultures recognized third and fourth alternative gender statuses that encompassed male, feminine, and unique traits. Two-Spirit people historically fulfilled specialized roles in both work and spiritual practices. The concept embraces various Queer identities of gender, and orientation.
Here is the LGBTQ History page for the Two Spirit and Non-Traditional Families and this lovely picture from 1866 says it all, really.

Pretty much. For me that doesn't necessarily mean those religions or their followers are evil but it does mean high church officials have been lead astray from the path of brotherly love and they (high church officials) need to be shown the light to save their souls from eternal damnation.
The concept of two-spirited people reminds me a lot of the concept of Yin and yang their asian ancestors developed. I was gonna say so from that perspective aren't we all two-spirited but come to think of it is seems kind of arbitrary that we consider certain personality traits as male or female based just upon how common they are among men and women or how openly they are displayed.

I don't think so either. It's just that a lot of things that were written thousands of years ago to function as law has no reason to be any more. What remains is used to push a political agenda and ofc the people on top of the hierarchy of these establishments don't get on top by wanting to change things so change is slow .I have good hope though that they are changing and that they will keep changing for the benefit of all.
There's a reason Jesus was an anarchist and it seems a lot of Christian churches are bent on demonstrating why. Not only Christian churches but that's where the irony is most palpable.
I was gonna say so from that perspective aren't we all two-spirited
Sometimes it does seem that we are but you're right, it's perception, as many things we take for granted because they are such a part of the fabric of our society and culture, we don't naturally question them.
it is seems kind of arbitrary that we consider certain personality traits as male or female based just upon how common they are among men and women or how openly they are displayed.
Exactly. Not just because they are most common to the gender but because of the display. Sometimes even most of all. And ofc they also change with the times. But some have a very long life, despite evidence of the contrary.
I have a coworker whose nephew (5 year old) enjoys playing with his sister's dolls. You have no idea the amount of angst it has caused his parents. My coworker is laughing his ass off about what he describes as the "dollgate". He says his brother is worried that the boy is "too feminine". How is a boy more "feminine" at 5 because he enjoys spending time with his sister pretending to feed a baby doll? Is caring for a child a "feminine trait"? He has a baby sister. He sees his parents take care of the baby. He does the same.
So when his dad takes care of the baby, it's masculine but because the boy does it, his dad worries it's too girly?
Now I went on a tangent on our tangent ;) Sorry. I just liked that you had the same thoughts I had when I first read about two-spirit.

Oh, dear dear dear. We need to talk about this outfit.
See, it looks like youβre going for an overall edgy troll look, but that whole vibe is like, several seasons out of date. And even independent of fashion trends, baldly discriminating against people is just so very gauche at this point.
And if youβre going to accessorize, then you need to go for subtlety! Trying to bait people into arguments about racism in addition to hating on gay people in a Pride thread? Coco Chanel once said that before you comment on Internet forums, you should take a look in the mirror and remove at least one piece of bigotry from your post. It really elevates the whole look.
The good news here is that youβre a burger, because if you were a person, people would take one look at you in this attire and see an unrepentant jerk whoβs just here to stir shit and invoke anger. But, even more good news: no outfit is permanent! You can change up your look at any time! If youβd like any pointers at styling yourself better, please ask. Weβre here to help.

No, your outfit tells everyone that you βfight against the annoying gayβ and compares us to βfucking racistsβ. Thatβs not asking questions, dear β youβre clearly wearing a statement piece. And if thatβs the look you chose to leave the house in, then so be it. Thatβs your choice and by all means you can wear it, but it also means everyone can see it. Trying to walk it back while itβs still on you though isnβt really an option. Youβre either wearing it or youβre not, and the only person who chooses to dress yourself up that way is you.

You know the shame, when you have a mustard stain on the middle of your shirt, and has to be in the open? This pride is the opposite of it - we often mix it up, or phrase it as being happy.
I like my shirt because it looks good on me, I'm proud of my purchase. I keep my head up high, and I don't wear extra clothing just to hide it because it has a huge mustard blot. It's nothing to hide
Or the old classic, " I'm proud of you " which shows respect and love.
The racist example is bad. The base of racism is that I am what I am, and that's more than you. Also involves hate, aggression, belittling others, and a lot more nasty things. It's way too complex to compare it with LGBT Pride's "I am who I am, and I'm not ashamed of it" pride.
Comment has been collapsed.
weird that you include "berlin" in your name. almost like you have nationalistic pride?

That's because "t0b3" was already taken and I had to come up with something to add to it. Has nothing to do with anything of pride.

listen, you can have nationalistic pride all you want, but do you really have to be so flamboyant about it? like, we get it, you enjoy bigotry, but its so blatant. you should really only act like that in your own bedroom. none of us want to see that.

I'm beginning to suspect that it's just attention seeking at this point. He might be agreeing with what he's saying, but the way he just keeps repeating the same "question" every time he gets a chance and keeps getting the same replies every single time makes me think he's at this point just doing it because he knows it will get him attention, even if it means that he sometimes hurts others in the process.

Fuck, I shared an appartment with a gay dude for 3 years once.

I mean
I hate when people take pride in being straight.
You simply don't choose to be either, right?

I want the LGTBQIA+ community to have more visibility.
Then try leading with something like that instead of an insult the next time this topic comes up.
I just don't get why...
You won't get my sympathy for not understanding something while you're simultaneously resisting every effort to learn it like you have all across this topic. I dropped my act -- it's well past the point that you should drop yours.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't need anyone's sympathy.
I'm just having a hard time understanding the whole concept because I was raised by ignorant parents.
Still, I know that much to tell that you don't get to choose how you are.
And being not straight isn't being "different" but being a fucking normal human being.
Like.. idk how to say this, I'm sorry, English isn't my first language, but
Being gay, trans, lesbian, whatever, is completely normal.
So please don't get me wrong here. I never intended to insult LGTBQIA+ peeps.
I just question if you really should take pride in something that is completely normal.
I understand that "different" people were oppressed in the past, but that's not a thing anymore.
Comment has been collapsed.
I live in Szczecin (Stettin in german), 150 km east from Berlin. Come and stay a while here in Poland and you will understand that you don't have to look for extreme examples of Far East, fundamental Islamic countries, to eyewitness that kind of oppression. Heck, even constitution, law isn't treating people equally here because for example the legal marriage is only possible between people of different biological sexes and that in itself has many repercussions. It's just a tip of an iceberg. We are kinda close neighbours, yet our countries are so different. Think about it for a minute.
Comment has been collapsed.
I probably shouldn't even try because multiple people have already answered and you just ignore it, but maybe you are thinking of the wrong definition of pride. Let's look in the Oxford English Dictionary, which is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. There's one definition here
[uncountable, singular] a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction that you get when you or people who are connected with you have done something well or own something that other people admire
or perhaps:
[uncountable] (disapproving) the feeling that you are better or more important than other people
I think this is what you are thinking of.
Then there is this definition:
[uncountable] the feeling of respect that you have for yourself
This is what we mean by pride. We mean we are not ashamed of our sexuality or gender identity, like many of us were taught or a good portion of the world views us.
Comment has been collapsed.
Slogans tend to be worded positively and shortly. So it's rather "Pride Month" or "gay pride" instead of "No shame month" or "gays not hiding".
It's not about pride of being gay, there is no reason for that It's about being pride of not surrendering to the partial antiquated mindset of society and the issues that come up with it. E.g. as a German you may know the debate that no football player has had his coming out during his career yet, right? Besides that media would pounce on that poor guy just for being the first, thirsty for the sensation, he would probably get a lot of hate messages in social media and in public.

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. β Karl Popper

It's a fascinating paradox, to be sure. I don't agree that hate speech needs to be suppressed because it's unclear what constitutes hate speech. I do think we need to be intolerant of violence, outside of self defense and maybe as a form of mitigation (WWII nukes.) There's likely other things I would consider reasonable to not tolerate, but I think we should tolerate as much as possible, within reason, and that includes a fair amount of intolerance.
