This seems to be a valid strategy. I can play any game older than 4 years just fine on my ultrabook, and I recently purchased Borderlands 2 GOTY for $9.

Does anyone else do this?

I do that with console games, buy old one for cheap preowned at gamestop instead of paying $60. My computer is to bad for that 5 year lag though, maybe 10 years?

I stopped playing console games a long time ago, although that seems like a good idea,=. The lag for console games would be maybe a year?

Even when I have a decent PC I still play old games, I'm pretty slow playing so it takes a while to get to the newer ones.

Not that many years, but I don't really buy new games. I think the newest I have is Rocket League and if the stuff from bundles don't count, the second newest is probably Dark Souls 2. I figured that with the backlog and all, I don't really need the latest and greatest games to play. I'll get them later and save some money.

Didn't play any games for about 5 years (except for vampire bloodlines :D) so I still have to catch up to the newest stuff. But I guess I'll have to buy a new monitor in the near feature for that. I'm just waiting for the first game that I can't play on it, because of driver incompatibility.

Yep, doing that for quite some time. Although not mainly because of hardware issues but because it usually takes at least a year for a game to come out fully and another half to a full year to get all the patches that make it playable.

No, I just buy bundles, don't activate the keys, and then the bundle sites die and the keys are lost. True story.

Yep, I tend to do that, currently playing through Resident Evil 4. My pc can probably run new stuff without much problem, is just me catching up to all the games I missed for various reasons.

I still have 8 year old PC, and only some very new games of 2015-2016 can not run on it. Mostly because of 32-bit.)

I usually do the same. Either because I can't afford the games or can't afford the GPU to run them. I don't want to run a nice new game at low graphics settings. I would prefer to run an older game with maxed out settings and get the full experience even if the game was released a few years ago. I like playing old games anyway, I still play games from the 90's. I don't feel like I am missing out on anything by not playing new games when they are released, a lot of them are overhyped anyway.

I have bought my last 2 GPU's on ebay for very cheap after they were a few years old at very deep discounts. I am still using a GTX 580 Amp Edition that I bought on ebay in early 2014 when the card was 3 years old. The card had a retail of $550 when it was released and I paid $111 3 years later. At the time, they were still selling for around $200-250 on ebay, but I lurked the site every day for about 3 weeks till I found a really good deal.

I remember when I was playing Counter Strike Source in 2012 with a Geforce 3 getting around 40-60 fps. I lurked ebay and picked up a 4 year old Radeon HD 4850 for $27 shipped and was now getting over 400 fps. That was a great investment :)
