So, I've been on a MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) kick lately, and have recently come to fall for Jessica Jones. After a long binge of Guild Wars 2, I logged off and attempted to watch some more, only to be informed that my Netflix account, running since before streaming was a thing, does not exist. Called support and, after identifying which household bank card was making the payments all these years, got them to reset the e-mail and pass on it and inform me that someone in Brazil had gotten my credentials (likely from an unrelated service hack that used the same credentials) as all languages had been set to Brazilian Portuguese, the attached e-mail ended in BR, and the IP address last used to log in was based in South America; for context and distance, I'm United States American, living in Stanislaus County, California. The thief created multiple new profiles, including one for a child, and set the billing to the highest service level.

Working with support took about an hour, including multiple calls as I discovered the upped charge and was initially unable to revert the language changes (the Brazilian dub of Jessica Jones is TERRIBLE), but now I have it back, and am happily swapping between JJ, Animaniacs, and Archer S.6.

To celebrate (I'll find anything to celebrate, someone take this as a cry for help), here's an SGTool FINAL FANTASY IX giveaway!

I don't "celebrate" the same misfortune twice, so you're out of luck in that regard ;)

I always wonder what drives people to steal things like this, when they HAVE to know it will get back to their owner, and they are messing with someone for -some hours?- of their on enjoyment.

This one seemed like a "sold" account. Someone confirmed that the login worked, then sold it to someone else as a "free" Netflix account, one that would pay for itself. The person who changed the e-mail address added family profiles, so I assume he bought it for his wife and kids. Too bad for him I actually watch my account usage.

EDIT: As for the reason it was stolen, to sell to someone else for a quick (scam) buck, of course.

Not many of those sellers admit the accounts are stolen.

Not likely, the theft is often discovered and fixed well before then, but the original account theft already has the money.

They just get told something like "One Time Payment, full Netflix account".

Keep in mind not everyone is going to realise what is wrong with that. They just think it is some great deal.

If there was a money transaction that of course explains it all. At least the only thing you lost was some of your time, about two years ago my phone got stolen, I "deactivated it via IMEI code some hours after, so the thief got basically a paperweight, but I stil had to buy a new one, with it's money cost :(

I'm confused, what's the point of buying a Netflix account from somebody? Don't you have to pay a subscription fee?

Nice to hear Netflix support can get on top of things quickly once confirmations of identity are made, makes the service more appealing to others

It's odd, of all things a Netflix account? Netflix isn't exactly expensive, even with them increasing the price a bit. Plus I don't think you need credit card to pay for Netflix, I see Netflix gift cards around all the time.

Hacked Netflix accounts is really common lately. I wonder if Netflix is to blame with some security issue. They are denying blame but it seems far too common... The selling accounts is also similar with what happens with Spotify premium accounts. I'm glad you got your account back! I've heard a few horror stories of people having a hard time with that.

More than likely, it's just password reuse. Use the same password in multiple places, and if one of them leaks passwords, people have easy access to any other accounts that use the same email/password combination.

I've heard about hacked account sold on the black market which is pretty stupid because you quickly notice and if you are using Paypal it's very easy to revoke payement. I don't really understand your language problem because the Netflix library depends on the place you are connecting, if you are using a Brazilian account in the USA you'll access the American library with American audio and subtitles.

Funny fact Brazil is the cheapest country for a Netflix account.

Thanks for your GA! I really hate those hackers - luckily it just happened to my WoW-account (although twice) and one of my 3 mail addresses and not on a more important account.
The only sad part: getting everything solved most likely takes more time and effort than it took them to hack the account.
